Parental hostage takers.

Three men presented to a single regional secure psychiatric unit over a twelve-month period, after taking their youngest child hostage in their own homes because of a threatened separation from the family. In each case the episode had escalated because of hostility to police involvement in what for them was a typical domestic upheaval. All cases ended without injury. In each man, substance abuse, a family history of domestic violence and fears of rejection were prominent, and the recent birth of a child may have been an added precipitant. There may be a common family structure which predispose

Cynical hostility: developmental factors, psychosocial correlates, and health behaviors.

Examined potential differences between individuals with high and low Cook and Medley (1954) Hostility (Ho) scale scores in regard to (a) self-esteem and particular developmental experiences; (b) utilization of social support, experience of anger, and the manner in which anger is managed; and (c) potentially health-damaging behaviors. Individuals with high Ho scale scores were found to be low in covert self-esteem and reported behavior on the part of their parents that reflected (a) less genuine acceptance, (b) more interference in the person's desires as a child, and (c) more punitiveness. Alcohol use by alcoholics with and without a history of parental alcoholism.

The association between parental history of alcoholism and the nature of alcoholism was assessed using a more reliable measure of family history (Family Tree Questionnaire) and a more comprehensive inventory of alcoholism (Alcohol Use Inventory) than used in earlier studies. Parental alcoholism was associated with more severe alcoholism on most parameters of alcohol use (age of onset, quantity, frequency, preoccupation, and sustained use) and alcohol-related problems (social, vocational, physical, cognitive, and loss of control). The association between parental history of alcoholism and more

Role of maternal functioning and parenting skills in adolescent functioning following parental divorce.

While divorce has been associated with impaired child functioning, the mechanisms within the divorce process leading to such an outcome have rarely been examined. The following hypothesis was examined: Divorce is associated with poor parental adjustment or disrupts parenting behavior, or both, which leads to poor adolescent functioning. Subjects were 121 and 93 young adolescents from intact and recently divorced families, respectively, and their mothers and teachers. Mothers completed measures assessing parental conflict and depression, observers coded parenting skills during a mother-adolesce

Development of a tool to assess suicide risk factors in urban adolescents.

Dramatic increases in the adolescent suicide rate over the past three decades have underscored the need for risk-assessment tools. The tools that do exist are oriented to older populations and their application to adolescents is questionable. A project was initiated at the University of Utah's Health Education Department to develop a pilot instrument to examine the differences between adolescents who have attempted suicide and other teenagers. Eighty-two subjects between the ages of 14 and 19 participated in the test of this instrument. Twenty-five subjects were identified by a physician or ps

Analysability in relation to early psychopathology.

Analysability is a highly important subject, both in the treatment of patients and in selecting candidates for analytical training. The assessment of analysability can be studied from two complementary points of view: the dynamic (with the data obtained in the preliminary interviews) and the genetic (with data obtained from early childhood by means of psychoanalytical treatment). The purpose of this study will be to contribute to the study of analysability from the genetic point of view. When one goes deeper into the analysis of a patient there may be doubts as to the limits and possibilities

Psychoanalytic Contributions to Psychodynamic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy: Freud's Structural Hypothesis.

Psychoanalysis has long lost its historical influence on U.S. academic psychiatry. Psychoanalytic theory, however, provides us with a rich and remarkably comprehensive knowledge of human development, both normative and pathologic. This article describes a psychoanalytic concept that enriches our understanding of the mind and its disorders: Freud's structural hypothesis. This core concept provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the clinical features of both neurotic and personality disorders. It also informs a psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Name and identity.

Identity, though complex, can be encoded in a name. The name bears the stamp of the namers' traditions and their hopes for the child. The infant's characteristics influence the choice to some degree and, to a degree, a name affects the person who bears it. The interface between names and personal identity is illustrated clinically in syndromes of transsexualism and multiple personality, in twinning, and in the development of the ego-ideal.

Primary femininity.

In Freud's theory of the origins of femininity in females, there is a stage unaccounted for in the chronology of the little girl's development: the first many months of life are not considered. We know by now that castration anxiety, penis envy, and the traumas and frustrations of oedipal conflict are easy to demonstrate; but if the first stage in female development is different from Freud's description-if a fundamental, fixed sense of being rightfully a female is established in earliest childhood-then our psychology of women needs repair. The factors that make up this stage, with examples, ar

Parental behavior, adult attachment, and DNA methylation of the MT2 oxytocin receptor gene region - The moderating role of neuroticism.

Parental behavior, especially in childhood, affects the child's development in numerous ways. Over the last decade, the aim to get a deeper understanding of how early experiences influence behavior later in life has led to an increased popularity of epigenetic studies. Several studies focused on negative childhood experiences, increased methylation at different oxytocin receptor gene sites, and deficits in social behavior in adolescence or adulthood. The current study focused on the role of parental behavior, personality, and methylation of the MT2 region in the oxytocin receptor gene on insec

Psychometric properties of the Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire among a non-clinical sample and its relationship with the characteristics of potentially addictive behaviors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The addiction literature conceptualizes problematic substance use and addictive behaviors (e.g., gambling disorder, gaming disorder) as having shared etiologies and phenomenologies. The reward deficiency syndrome (RDS) model proposes blunted responses to natural rewards that potentially contribute to the development of addictive behaviors. The 29-item Reward Deficiency Syndrome Questionnaire (RDSQ-29) was developed to assess RDS-related psychological-behavioral characteristics. The aim of the present study was to validate the Hebrew version of the RDSQ-29 and to provide em

The Outside of Psychotherapy-The Socioecological Approach to Treating Severe Personality Pathology in a Young Patient.

The socioecological treatment approach is rooted in fundamental principles of mentalization-based therapy (MBT) and evolutionary theory. Rather than focusing solely on the individual, this approach broadens the perspective to include the patient's wider social network in understanding and treating mental health disorders such as personality pathology. A core premise of this approach is that problems and their solutions should not be viewed in isolation but identified in close collaboration with the patient's environment. The socioecological approach integrates treatment network meetings, invol

Breakdown or Personality Disorder? Psychiatric Characterization and Developmental Pathways Towards Young Adulthood in Adolescents with Pathological Personality Structure.

Background/Objectives: Research is lacking about the development of personality disorders (PDs) from adolescence to early adulthood. This study aimed to characterize the profile of high-risk adolescents compared to adolescents with full-blown PDs and adolescents with other psychiatric disorders and to identify clinical markers that constitute a risk profile. Methods: We evaluated 99 adolescents (12-17 years old) through DSM-5-based semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, cognitive tasks, and scales regarding functioning and disorder severity. We divided patients into three groups: 22 adole

Impairments in personality functioning in adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Impairments in personality functioning (PF) according to the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders (AMPD) may affect anorexia nervosa (AN) and its treatment. However, PF impairments in adolescents with AN have not been studied. This case-control study analysed PF impairments in adolescent inpatients suffering from AN compared to a clinical control group (CC) and investigated the relationship of PF with AN severity. METHOD: Adolescent patients with AN (n = 43) and CC (n = 127) were matched by age, sex, and global functioning. Validated interviews were applied to assess impairme

Mental health, personality, and parental rearing styles of adolescents with Internet addiction disorder.

The objectives of this study were to compare the personality profiles of adolescent males with and without Internet addiction disorder (IAD), and to determine if IAD is associated with specific parental rearing behaviors. A total of 304 subjects (204 IAD positive and 100 IAD negative controls) completed three instruments: Symptom Checklist-90-revision (SCL-90-R), Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised (EPQ-R), and Egna Minnen av Barndoms Uppfostran--'My Memories of Upbringing' (EMBU). SCL-90-R profiles of adolescents with IAD revealed comparatively higher mean scores for all of the nine dom
