INTRODUCTION: There is growing interest in the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and increased cannabis retail density, driven by evidence suggesting higher density is associated with increased cannabis use. Yet little is known on how this relationship varies across different measures of cannabis retail density. This study explores how measures of neighborhood advantage and disadvantage relate to four cannabis retail density measures in the US.
METHODS: Data on licensed recreational cannabis retailers (n = 5586) were obtained from 18 state agency websites, geocoded, and spatially

Skeletal fractures are common in dialysis patients. Bone density measurements predict fractures in the general population, but in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) there is limited ability to predict fractures with these techniques. A review of the literature in patients with CKD stage 5 shows that bone density in the cortical bone of the radius or hip is generally lower compared with normal reference ranges by about one to two standard deviations, whereas in the spine bone density tends to be closer to the average expected values. The bone density is not able to predict the underlyin

The multimammate rat, Mastomys natalensis Smith 1834, is a dominant species in agro-ecosystems in Sub-Saharan Africa, but adapts quickly to changes in non-agricultural landscape, particularly woodlands and forests. In this study we report on reproduction and population dynamics of M. natalensis in deforested high elevation localities in the Usambara Mountains, north-east Tanzania. We conducted Capture-Mark-Recapture studies in 2002-2004, and established that reproduction of M. natalensis takes place in the extended wet season between February and June, and the population density peaks in June-…

We compared the corneal endothelial morphology between an age-matched population of American and Japanese persons. Endothelial specular photographs were subjected to a computer-assisted morphometry of the area and shape of individual cells. The endothelium in the Japanese population showed a significantly higher cell density when compared with an age-matched American population. However, there was no difference in the degree of variations in cell area and cell shape between the two populations. The results suggest that higher endothelial cell density in the Japanese population could be related

The feral Soay sheep (Ovis aries L.) population on Hirta, St Kilda, is host to a diverse component parasite community, but previous parasitological studies of the population have only focussed on the metazoan species. This paper reports the first epidemiological study of the protozoan species comprising Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia duodenalis and 11 species of Eimeria in Soay sheep across 3 years of varying host population density. Prevalence and intensity of almost all species of protozoa significantly decreased with host age, with the exception of E. granulosa, which increased in prevalen…

Women with the most extensive breast density, have a 4- to 6-fold higher cancer risk than women with the lowest density. This cross-sectional study evaluated associations of cumulative mammographic density in two distinct ethnic groups with the respective age-specific breast cancer incidences in the population. The study compared four cohorts of 200 women each aged 35 to 49 and 50 to 74, representing Jewish and Arab ethnicity. Breast density measures were calculated from screening mammograms, using a thresholding software (Cumulus). Breast cancer specific incidence values were obtained from th

Since the twenties of our century, at least 15 theories worth discussing have been developped which intend to explain the causes of natural … rt in the natural control of populations are summarized in Fig. 6. The actual value is the existing population density (Abundanz). The perturbances primarily causing its fluctuations (Fluktuation) are fertility and immigration which raise the abundance, mortality and emigration which lower it.The amplitude of the fluctuation must be limited, if the population is not …

Forecasting infectious disease dynamics is important for ecological management and emerging disease preparedness, yet many systems lack the long-term datasets required to develop reliable predictions. Spatial replication may provide an alternative by allowing information to be shared among populations, but the extent to which this improves forecasting remains unclear. Here, I used epidemic and temperature data from 20 replicated semi-natural Daphnia-parasite pond populations monitored across four seasons (80 epidemics) to test whether information from multiple populations improves forecasts an

BACKGROUND: Dogs are the most common pet animals worldwide. They may harbour a wide range of parasites with zoonotic potential, thus causing a health risk to humans. In Nigeria, epidemiological knowledge on these parasites is limited.
METHODS: In a community-based study, we examined 396 dogs in urban and rural areas of Ilorin (Kwara State, Central Nigeria) for ectoparasites and intestinal helminths. In addition, a questionnaire regarding knowledge and practices was applied to pet owners.
RESULTS: Nine ectoparasite species belonging to four taxa and six intestinal helminth species were identi

INTRODUCTION: Breast density is a marker of risk both due to the increased burden of fibroglandular tissue, which may harbour malignancy, and to obscuration of lesions in mammography. This study aims to assess the reliability of Lunit INSIGHT MMG as a tool for estimating breast density compared to breast radiologists, evaluate density on a population level of > 600,000 clients, and compare the density in clients with/without implants.
METHODS: 15,518 mammograms were abstracted to explore the intra- and inter-reader reliability between AI and breast radiologists. Variation in density was then

Osteoporosis has been suggested to contribute to the edentulous condition. However, studies specifically designed to examine the relationship between tooth loss and osteoporosis are scarce, and reported results have been mixed. This study investigated the correlation between tooth loss and spinal bone density in a nonHispanic white female population. Forty-four subjects were recruited and divided into high and low spinal bone density groups based on whether the bone density was higher or lower than the age-adjusted population mean bone density. Missing teeth and periodontal status in these gro

BACKGROUND: Human plague caused by Yersinia pestis remains a public health threat in endemic countries, because the disease is associated with increased risk of mortality and severe economic and social consequences. During the past 10 years, outbreaks of plague have occasionally occurred in Vietnam's Central Highlands region. The present study sought to describe and analyse the occurrence of plague and its association with ecological factors.
METHODS: The study included all 510 communes of the Central Highlands region (with a total population of approximately 4 million) where 95% of incidence

The invasion of different southern California landscapes by West Nile virus (WNV) and its subsequent amplification to epidemic levels during 2004 enabled us to study the impact of differing corvid populations in three biomes: the hot Colorado desert with few corvids (Coachella Valley), the southern San Joaquin Valley (Kern County) with large western scrub-jay but small American crow populations, and the cool maritime coast (Los Angeles) with a large clustered American crow population. Similar surveillance programs in all three areas monitored infection rates in mosquitoes, seroconversion rates

Measles and pertussis are ubiquitous vaccine-preventable diseases, which remain an important public health problem in developing countries. Hence, developing a deep understanding of their transmission dynamics remains imperative. To achieve this, we compared the impact of vaccination at both individual and population levels in a Senegalese rural community. This study represents the first such comparative study in tropical conditions and constitutes a point of comparison with other studies of disease dynamics in developed countries. Changes in the transmission rates of infections are reflected

Nonparametric population genetic modeling provides a simple and flexible approach for studying demographic history and epidemic dynamics using pathogen sequence data. Existing Bayesian approaches are premised on stochastic processes with stationary increments which may provide an unrealistic prior for epidemic histories which feature extended period of exponential growth or decline. We show that nonparametric models defined in terms of the growth rate of the effective population size can provide a more realistic prior for epidemic history. We propose a nonparametric autoregressive model on the
