Indolent lymphoma: addressing the needs of survivors.

Over the past two decades, there has been a continuous improvement in outcome for patients with indolent lymphoma (iNHL) resulting in a gradual accumulation of survivors. While life expectancy in the current era approaches that of the lymphoma-free population, patients continue to experience lifelong complications of the disease and its treatment affecting general health, emotional, psychological and social wellbeing, relationships, employment, finances, and fitness. Contemporary care models while suited to the management of lymphoma are often lacking when it comes to identification and manage

Care of Cancer Survivors: Distress and Mental Health.

In 2022, it was estimated that 18.1 million US adults were cancer survivors. By 2032, this number is projected to increase to 22.5 million. All patients with cancer experience some degree of psychological distress associated with the diagnosis. This can include mental health conditions, most commonly anxiety and depression. Management of such conditions in cancer survivors begins with detection via screening. Commonly used screening tools include the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Distress Thermometer, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale, and the Patient Health

High Rates of Mental Health Disorders in Civilian Employees Working in Police Organizations.

Working in a police organization often involves being exposed to potentially traumatic events and stressful circumstances regardless of occupation or rank. Police mental health is a public health concern, but the mental health of civilian employees working in police organizations has been much less studied. The current study aims to compare the frequency of mental health conditions in both police officers and civilians. This was evaluated by measuring mean scores on several mental health screening tools including scales to determine symptom severity for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) wit

[Physical activity in patients with schizophrenia: From neurobiology to clinical benefits].

Schizophrenia is a severe chronic mental disorder that mainly manifests by positive symptoms, negative symptoms, disorganized behavior and thought and cognitive impairments. Taken together, these symptoms have substantial impact on quality of life, well-being and functional outcome. Patients with schizophrenia have dramatically higher levels of cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity than the general population due to poor physical fitness and to sedentary lifestyle. They have a reduced life expectancy, and an excess mortality being two or three times more than that in the general population. M

Similar health emergencies, different commitments: Comparative strategies to end Ebola and COVID-19 in "post-conflict" Liberia.

Liberia, in the face of two consecutive health emergencies - the Ebola epidemic in 2014 and COVID in 2019 - offers a unique, comparative perspective on health crisis management within a fractured healthcare system. In dialogue with a feminist-informed political economy of health in the African context, this paper has two central objectives. First, it examines the strategies employed by community-based women's organisations - many of whom remain invested in peacebuilding after a 14-year civil war (1989-2003)) - to contain the Ebola and COVID-19 disease outbreaks. Second, it explores the impleme

Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Cognitive Function Management in Middle-Aged and Older Adults with Hypertension: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is an increasing public health concern across adulthood, including among young adults, and remains highly prevalent in middle-aged and older populations. In this review, middle-aged adults were defined as individuals aged 45 years or older, and older adults as individuals aged 60 years or older. Hypertension is also a modifiable vascular risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, and cognitive impairment is common among patients with hypertension. Persistent blood pressure elevation may impair cognition through vascular injury, cerebral hypoperfusion and small-ves

Clinical management of pregnancy in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: An expert opinion.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with a higher risk for pregnancy and birth complications according to the specific features associated with PCOS. The features include obesity before and during pregnancy, hyperandrogenism, insulin resistance, infertility, cardiometabolic risk factors, and poor mental health. PCOS is not often recognized as a risk factor for poor pregnancy and birth outcomes in pregnancy care guidelines, while its associated features are. Pregnancy-related risk profile should ideally be assessed for modifiable risk factors (e.g., lifestyle and weight management) a

Identifying Obstacles for the Obese Trauma Patient.

With the prevalence of obesity and the incidence of trauma increasing, acute care practitioners need to be better prepared to manage this special population. Numerous obstacles exist that complicate and delay the care for this population. Recognizing the obese patient as a special population by trauma organizations and health care facilities can help educate providers in the external, anatomical, and physiological obstacles that may delay care. The purpose of this article is to identify these obstacles that may complicate the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the obese trauma patient in

Importance of Hemoglobin SC (HbSC) Screening: Diagnosis of Sickle Cell HbSC Disease Following Hemolytic Crisis and Pulmonary Embolism Due to Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC Line) Thrombosis.

Sickle cell disease includes various inherited hemoglobinopathies due to the production of abnormal hemoglobin molecules. This can lead to significant clinical complications and sequelae. Hemoglobin SC (HbSC) is a notable variant of SCD, requiring early diagnosis and management to prevent severe outcomes. This case report highlights the critical need for SCD screening, particularly among immigrant populations where current U.S. guidelines do not mandate arrival screening. We present the case of a West African male, age 45, with chronic osteomyelitis, who developed a life-threatening pulmonary

Integrating psychiatry into a community based palliative care team for structurally vulnerable populations: a descriptive retrospective cohort study of the PEACH psychiatry program model.

BACKGROUND: Structurally vulnerable populations have higher morbidity rates and lower life expectancy than the general population. Additionally, there is a high prevalence of mental illness and substance use disorders within this group, which compounds their health issues and adds complexity to providing palliative care. The Palliative Education and Care for the Homeless (PEACH) program in Toronto provides palliative care to this population, and includes an integrated psychiatry service to support patients with mental illness. The aim of this paper is to describe a novel model of integrated ps

Integrating physical healthcare into psychiatry for severe mental illness: A narrative review and position statement from the ECNP PAN-Health group.

Individuals with severe mental illness (SMI) face significantly reduced life expectancy, mainly driven by natural causes such as cardiovascular disease, pulmonary disease, cancer, and stroke. Although medical care has advanced, the mortality gap between individuals with SMI and the general population has continued to expand in many countries over recent decades. This disparity is exacerbated by systemic healthcare inequities, fragmented healthcare, insufficient use of preventive measures, and the burden of multimorbidity. This paper proposes six actionable strategies to reduce the excess morta

Oral health needs and case mix complexity of adults with disabilities requiring special care dentistry: a retrospective hospital audit.

INTRODUCTION: Adults with disabilities may present with conditions that exacerbate symptoms of oral diseases, resulting in changes in behaviours and distress. Access to necessary oral healthcare is often available at various levels of the healthcare system, and the appropriate level of care may be stratified according to case complexity. This study was conducted in a tertiary-level centre for oral health that provides specialist-level care for adults with disabilities and special needs, often referred from primary care or other tertiary healthcare services. METHODS: Analysis of patients' anon
