Three-Dimensional Printed Model for Surgical Simulation of Combined Transpetrosal Approach.

BACKGROUND: The combined transpetrosal approach is a complicated skull base surgery with a high degree of difficulty. Herein, we made a 3-dimensional (3D) printed petrous bone with color-coded anatomic sites and evaluated its usefulness as a model to practice drilling associated with combined transpetrosal surgery. METHODS: To design a 3D model of the petrous bone, we chose a representative epidermoid petroclival tumor case who underwent combined transpetrosal surgery at our hospital. A 3D image of the petrous bone embedded with color-coded anatomic sites, including cranial nerves, brainstem,

Construction of three-dimensional printed anatomic models for frontal sinus education.

BACKGROUND: The anatomy of the frontal sinus can pose a challenge for many neuroradiolgists and otolaryngologists, especially trainees. While much of resident education occurs in didactics, self-study or in the operating room, studies suggest that some trainees prefer hands-on learning. Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology provides users the opportunity to make customizable low-cost objects that provide tactile learning-a learning modality that may be preferable in education. METHODS: Three-dimensional printed models of frontal sinus anatomy based on selected patient computed tomography…

Patient-specific 3-dimensionally printed models for neurosurgical planning and education.

OBJECTIVE: Advances in 3-dimensional (3D) printing technology permit the rapid creation of detailed anatomical models. Integration of this technology into neurosurgical practice is still in its nascence, however. One potential application is to create models depicting neurosurgical pathology. The goal of this study was to assess the clinical value of patient-specific 3D printed models for neurosurgical planning and education. METHODS: The authors created life-sized, patient-specific models for 4 preoperative cases. Three of the cases involved adults (2 patients with petroclival meningioma and…

A 3D printed exoskeleton facilitates HeartMate III inflow cannula position.

The optimal placement of the inflow cannula is critical for adequate ventricular unloading and device function in left ventricular assist device implantation. The anatomy of the left ventricle varies widely between patients yielding unpredictable surgical results depending on cannula position. We therefore aimed at devising a novel approach for optimal placement of the cannula in the clinical setting using computer-aided three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and 3D printed guiding exoskeleton. This novel cannula positioning technique provides a personalized left ventricular assist device impla

Multi-directional cellular alignment in 3D guided by electrohydrodynamically-printed microlattices.

Recapitulating aligned cellular architectures of native tissues in vitro is important to engineer artificial tissue analogs with desired biological functions. Here a novel strategy is presented to direct three-dimensional (3D) cellular alignment by embedding cell/collagen hydrogel into the predefined electrohydrodynamically-printed microlattices. The cell/collagen hydrogel, originally filled within the printed microlattices uniformly, was found to gradually develop into densely-populated and highly-aligned bands along the longitudinal direction of the printed microlattices. The cellular alignm

Feasibility of single-use 3D-printed instruments for total knee arthroplasty.

AIMS: This aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of designing and introducing generic 3D-printed instrumentation for routine use in total knee arthroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Instruments were designed to take advantage of 3D-printing technology, particularly ensuring that all parts were pre-assembled, to theoretically reduce the time and skill required during surgery. Concerning functionality, ranges of resection angle and distance were restricted within a safe zone, while accommodating either mechanical or anatomical alignment goals. To identify the most suitable biocompatible…

Sterility of 3D-Printed Orthopedic Implants Using Fused Deposition Modeling.

The use of 3-dimensional (3D) printing in orthopedics is developing rapidly and impacting the areas of preoperative planning, surgical guides, and simulation. As this technology continues to improve, the greatest impact of 3D printing may be in low- and middle-income countries where surgical items are in short supply. This study investigated sterility of 3D-printed ankle fracture fixation plates and cortical screws. The hypothesis was that the process of heated extrusion in fused deposition modeling printing would create sterile prints in a timely fashion that would not require postproduction …

PolyJet 3D-Printed Enclosed Microfluidic Channels without Photocurable Supports.

Microfluidic devices have historically been prepared using fabrication techniques that often include photolithography and/or etching. Recently, additive manufacturing technologies, commonly known as 3D-printing, have emerged as fabrication tools for microfluidic devices. Unfortunately, PolyJet 3D-printing, which utilizes a photocurable resin that can be accurately printed, requires the use of support material for any designed void space internal to the model. Removing the support material from the printed channels is difficult in small channels with single dimensions of less than ∼200 μm and n…

Ultrafiltration binding analyses of glycated albumin with a 3D-printed syringe attachment.

Protein-ligand binding assays facilitate the understanding of biomolecular interactions. Classical equilibrium dialysis methods are often used for accurate determination of binding properties. While accurate, the long equilibration times associated with the technique (> 6 h) hinder throughput. Here, in an attempt to gather high-accuracy results while reducing total analysis time, a low pressure ultrafiltration method that relies on a simple membrane-containing syringe attachment was developed. A minimal portion (1-2%) of the solution containing the binding analytes of interest is driven throug

Creating an Optimal 3D Printed Model for Temporal Bone Dissection Training.

OBJECTIVE: Making a 3-dimensional (3D) temporal bone model is simple using a plaster powder bed and an inkjet printer. However, it is difficult to reproduce air-containing spaces and precise middle ear structures. The objective of this study was to overcome these problems and create a temporal bone model that would be useful both as a training tool and for preoperative simulation. METHODS: Drainage holes were made to remove excess materials from air-containing spaces, ossicle ligaments were manually changed to bony structures, and small and/or soft tissue structures were colored differently w

A 3D-printed guide for lateral approach sinus grafting: A dental technique.

Lateral approach sinus grafting has become a routine and predictable surgical method of augmenting the pneumatized sinus for implant placement. Outlining the lateral window access can be a challenging task for the clinician to envision and execute. Improper extension and access to the maxillary sinus can prevent proper placement of graft materials and lead to complications. The purpose of this report was to demonstrate a technique that will allow the precise planning of the lateral approach using radiographic information and 3-dimensional (3D) software to 3D-print a surgical guide.

Fabrication of three-dimensional scan-to-print ear model for microtia reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Microtia is a congenital deformity of the external ear that occurs in 1 of every 5000 births. Microtia reconstruction using traditional two-dimensional templates does not provide highly detailed ear shapes. Here, we describe the feasibility of using a three-dimensional (3D) ear model as a reference. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven children aged from 11 to 16 (6 grade III and 1 grade II microtia) were recruited from Seoul National University Children's Hospital, Korea. We generated 3D-computer-aided design models of each patient's ear by performing 3D laser scanning for a mirror-trans
