Longitudinal relations between reading and socio-behavioral skills in elementary school children: Existing knowledge, some preliminary findings, and future directions.

Reading and socio-behavioral difficulties often co-occur in elementary school, posing significant developmental and societal concerns. Yet t … from a preliminary study investigating the longitudinal relations between reading and internalizing problem behaviors in both the general population and children with reading difficulties (RD). Using latent growth models with structured residuals and data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 2010-11, we observed bidirectional associat …

The assessment of preschool children with ESSENCE symptoms: concordance between parents, preschool teachers and child psychologists.

BACKGROUND: It is important to detect children with Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations (ESSENCE) in order to implement early intervention and support for the child and family. Standardized instruments for assessment in different contexts of behaviour problems, engagement and psychosocial health obtain an objective picture of the preschool child's mental health. AIM: To explore and compare parents', preschool teachers' and child health care psychologists' assessment of behaviour, everyday function, engagement, social interaction and psychosocial heal

Disruptive child behavior severity and parenting program session attendance: Individual participant data meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We tested if baseline disruptive child behavior problem severity predicts parental attendance at sessions of a parenting group program. METHOD: We used a database of randomized trials of the Incredible Years parenting program in Europe and restricted the sample to participants randomized to the intervention arm. Using baseline Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory scores, we distinguished between trial-level problem severity and child-level problem severity, compared linear and quadratic functional forms at both levels, and considered cross-level interactions, all in a multilevel Poisson

Emotion Dysregulation, ODD and Conduct Problems in a Sample of Five and Six-Year-Old Children.

Previous studies examining the relationship between emotion dysregulation and externalizing behavior problems have, so far, focused on using general screening questionnaires capturing a wide range of externalizing behaviors and emotion dysregulation has mostly been assessed through direct observation using negative mood induction and behavioral tasks. The purpose of this study was to explore this relationship using a multi-informant rated clinical questionnaires. Parents and teachers of 609 5-6-year-old children (46% girls, 54% boys) completed the ERC, DBRS, and SDQ. ODD symptoms/conduct probl

Constellations of family risk for long-term adolescent antisocial behavior.

Adolescent antisocial behavior (ASB) can have long-term individual and societal consequences. Much of the research on the development of ASB considers risk and protective factors in isolation or as cumulative indices, likely overlooking the co-occurring and interacting nature of these factors. Guided by theories of ASB risk (i.e., coercive family process, disengagement), this study uses latent profile analysis to evaluate whether there are subgroups of families in the population that conform to specific constellations of risk factors prescribed by established theories of risk for ASB, and whet

PROSPECTIVE ASSOCIATIONS OF DEPRESSIVE RUMINATION AND SOCIAL PROBLEM SOLVING WITH DEPRESSION: A 6-MONTH LONGITUDINAL STUDY(.).

The main purpose of this study was to examine whether depressive rumination and social problem solving are prospectively associated with depressive symptoms. Nonclinical university students (N = 161, 64 men, 97 women; M age = 19.7 yr., SD = 3.6, range = 18-61) recruited from three universities in Japan completed the Beck Depression Inventory-Second Edition (BDI-II), the Ruminative Responses Scale, Social Problem-Solving Inventory-Revised Short Version (SPSI-R:S), and the Means-Ends Problem-Solving Procedure at baseline, and the BDI-II again at 6 mo. later. Self-recognition of eating-disordered behavior in college women: further evidence of poor eating disorders "mental health literacy"?

Self-recognition of eating-disordered behavior was examined among female college students (n = 94) with a high level of bulimic-type eating disorder symptoms. A vignette was presented describing a fictional young woman with bulimia nervosa. Participants were asked whether they might currently have a problem such as the one described, while also completing self-report measures of eating disorder symptoms, general psychological distress, and functional impairment. Less than half (47.9%) of participants believed that they currently had a problem with their eating. In both bivariate and multivaria

Gender-deviant boys compared with normal and clinical control boys.

The physical movement and social characteristics of effeminate behavior-problem, referred boys (N = 13) were compared with those of normal boys (N = 25) and boys (N = 12) referred for nongender problems. Parent reports, observer ratings, and videotapes were collected in a series of structured tasks. As expected, mothers described gender-problem sons as much more feminine than the other two groups in interests, activities, and mannerisms. Gender-problem sons were also seen as relatively inactive and introverted. Further, they were nonsignificantly lower than the clinical control boys in perceiv

Assessments and Interventions to Address Challenging Behavior in Individuals with Intellectual Disability and Autism Spectrum Disorder in Japan: A Consolidated Review.

Intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder are neurodevelopmental disorders that emerge during the developmental period. A significant barrier that impedes the social adaptation of individuals with these disorders is the exhibition of problem behaviors, such as self-injurious, stereotyped, and aggressive/destructive behaviors. In recent years, these problem behaviors have been collectively referred to as "challenging behavior," in accordance with the contention that they result from an interaction between the individual and his or her social environment. Evidence-based psychosocial i…

Individualism-Collectivism, Social Self-Control and Adolescent Substance Use and Risky Sexual Behavior.

Individualism and collectivism are cultural syndromes that have been associated with adolescent problem behavior in studies conducted in the U.S. and Southeast Asia. However, research investigating the mechanisms of how cultural orientation impacts health risk behaviors has been limited. This study tested a new model explaining the relationship between cultural orientation (i.e., individualism, collectivism) and adolescent problem behavior (i.e., substance use and risky sex) in terms of interpersonal self-regulation (i.e., social self-control). As such, the study is rooted in theories of the r…

Hypersensitivity to reward in problem gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has begun to examine the neurophysiologic basis of pathological gambling. However, direct evidence of a behavioral deficit and an accompanying neurofunctional deviation in a realistic gambling context such as Black Jack has not yet been reported. METHODS: Electroencephalogram was recorded while 20 problem gamblers and 21 control participants played a computerized version of Black Jack. Participants were asked to decide at point scores between 11 and 21 whether they wanted to take another card ("hit") to arrive closer to 21 than the opponent (simulated by computer)

A Systematic Review of Guided, Parent-Led Digital Interventions for Preadolescent Children with Emotional and Behavioural Problems.

Emotional and behavioural problems (EBP) are prevalent amongst children, and guided, parent-led digital interventions offer one method of improving access to effective treatments. This systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42023484098) aimed to examine the evidence base for, and characteristics of, these types of interventions through a narrative synthesis. Systematic searches were conducted using Medline, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science in January 2024 and February 2025, supplemented with hand searching in March/April 2024 and February 2025. Studies were eligible if they reported outcom

Cost-Effectiveness of Digital Preventive Parent Training for Early Childhood Disruptive Behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Childhood disruptive behaviour disorder associates with various, also costly problems. Parent training is effective in reducing childhood disruptive behaviour. Only a few studies have evaluated the cost-effectiveness of digital parent training in reducing children's disruptive behaviour. AIMS OF THE STUDY: We evaluated the two-year cost-effectiveness of an Internet and telephone assisted parent training intervention called the Strongest Families Smart Website (SFSW) for prevention of children's disruptive behaviour compared to education control (EC) from the combined perspective o

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and child behaviour problems in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood events (ACEs) are associated with negative health effects in adulthood. Despite knowledge of these later impacts, little is known about the earlier effect of ACEs on later child behaviour in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). METHODS: The population-based Asenze cohort study was implemented in a peri-rural area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, comprising five Zulu tribal areas. Two waves of data were examined: family information and ACEs exposure when children were on average 5 years old and child behaviour problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire

Some critical comments on the paper titled "Some critical considerations in applying the construct of psychopathy to research and classification of childhood disruptive behavior disorders".

Frick (2022) presented a narrative review of some literature and made several critical comments regarding the extension of the full psychopathy construct to research and classification of childhood disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs). His arguments cautioned against the use of the multicomponent concept of psychopathy for specification of DBDs for several reasons including definitional issues, symptom sequencing, specifier versus risk factor considerations, potential overlap with other disorders and criteria (e.g., ADHD), and concerns regarding harm. While I agree with Frick (2022) that we ne

Subgrouping children and adolescents with disruptive behaviors: symptom profiles and the role of callous-unemotional traits.

Disruptive behavior during childhood and adolescence is heterogeneous and associated with several psychiatric disorders. The identification of more homogeneous subgroups might help identify different underlying pathways and tailor treatment strategies. Children and adolescents (aged 8-18) with disruptive behaviors (N = 121) and healthy controls (N = 100) were included in a European multi-center cognition and brain imaging study. They were assessed via a battery of standardized semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. K-means cluster-model analysis was carried out to identify subgroups wi
