Since Róbert Bárány proposed his hypothesis on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), dizziness associated with vertigo has been interpreted as being vestibular in origin. However, there have been many contradictory findings showing modulations of VOR, which have caused confusion as to VOR's role and accuracy. Further, there seems to be an influence of VOR when the anatomical inner ear structures are congenitally absent. Many people report vertiginous symptoms when they are exposed to visually challenging situations. These people with visually induced vertigo are usually found to have only mildly abno

The human brain can generate a continuously changing postural model of our body. Somatic (proprioceptive) signals from skeletal muscles and joints contribute to the formation of the body representation. Recent neuroimaging studies of proprioceptive bodily illusions have elucidated the importance of three brain systems (motor network, specialized parietal systems, right inferior fronto-parietal network) in the formation of the human body representation. The motor network, especially the primary motor cortex, processes afferent input from skeletal muscles. Such information may contribute to the

OBJECTIVE: Modulation of 20-Hz activity in the primary sensorimotor cortex (SM1) may be important for oral functions. Here, we show that 20-Hz event-related desynchronization/synchronization (20-Hz ERD/ERS) is modulated by sensory input and motor output in the oral region.
METHODS: Magnetic 20-Hz activity was recorded following right-sided tongue stimulation during rest (Rest) and self-paced repetitive tongue movement (Move). To exclude proprioception effects, 20-Hz activity induced by right-sided hard palate stimulation was also recorded. The 20-Hz activity in the two conditions was compared…

Recent studies reveal the role of the ankle retinacula in proprioception and functional stability of the ankle, but there is no clear evidence of their role in the outcomes of ankle sprain. 25 patients with outcomes of ankle sprain were evaluated by MRI to analyze possible damage to the ankle retinacula. Patients with damage were subdivided into two groups: group A comprised cases with ankle retinacula damage only, and group B those also with anterior talofibular ligament rupture or bone marrow edema. Both groups were examined by VAS, CRTA and static posturography and underwent three treatment…

Motion sickness is a common and distressing but poorly understood syndrome associated with nausea/vomiting and autonomic nervous system accompaniments that develops in the air or space as well as on sea or land. A bidirectional aetiologic link prevails between migraine and motion-sickness. Motion sickness provokes jerk nystagmus induced by both optokinetic and vestibular stimulation. Fixation of gaze or closure of eyes generally prevents motion sickness while vestibular otolithic function is eliminated in microgravity of space, indicating a predominant pathogenetic role for visuo-sensory input

The effects of whole body vibration (WBV) were studied on subjects trained to perform on tasks involving blindfolded arm positioning (proprioceptive tasks), tracking of visual targets and control of static and dynamic torques. Subjects were vibrated in a seated position by means of a hydraulic jack. The vibration used (0.1 G at floor level and 18 Hz) was that occasionally encountered on medium-size cruising helicopter. The seat was that of a heliccopter pilot whose foam cushion was 6 cm thick with a density of 26 kg/m3. Systematic past-pointing was observed for both arm flexion and extension.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS) is common among overhead athletes. Static stretching (SS) and dynamic warm-up (DW) are widely used, but their acute effects on comprehensive shoulder function in athletes with SIS are not fully understood. This study compared the acute effects of SS, DW, and a combined protocol (SS + DW) on range of motion (ROM), stability, proprioception, and strength in male athletes with SIS and healthy controls. METHODS: In this randomized controlled crossover trial, 25 male athletes with SIS and 25 healthy controls performed SS, DW, and SS + DW protocols in …

CONTEXT: Somatosensory dysfunction in people with chronic ankle instability (CAI) has been reported to influence not only peripheral performance but also sensory reweighting of central nervous system. Sensory constraints, such as visual or somatosensory perturbations originating from sway surroundings or sway surface, continuously occur during body movements. Dynamically reweighting somatosensory, visual and vestibular cues are crucial for postural stability. However, due to contradictory evidence, it is unclear how sensory constraints affect sensorimotor functions and sensory reweighting abil

Understanding why falls during pregnancy occur at over 25% rate over gestation has clinical impacts on the health of pregnant individuals. Attention, proprioception, and perception of the environment are required to prevent trips and falls. This research aimed to understand how the changes to these neurocognitive processes control obstacle avoidance through gestation. Seventeen pregnant participants were tested five times in 6-week intervals. Participants walked an obstacle course (OC), and we analyzed the crossings over obstacles that were set to 10% of participants' body height. Participants…

A few years after their bilateral vestibular loss, patients usually show a motor repertoire that is almost back to normal. This recovery is thought to involve an upregulation of the visual and proprioceptive information that compensates for the lack of vestibular information. Here, we investigated whether plantar tactile inputs, which provide body information relative to the ground and to the Earth vertical, contribute to this compensation. More specifically, we tested the hypothesis that somatosensory cortex response to electric stimulation of the plantar sole in standing adults will be great

Neural circuits connecting the cerebellum with the cerebral cortex are important for both motor and cognitive functions. Therefore, assessment of cerebellar function is clinically important for patients with various motor and cognitive dysfunctions. Cerebellum-dependent motor learning has been studied using various tasks. The most widely used tasks are visuomotor adaptation tasks, in which subjects are required to make movements in two dimensions. Studies using simpler tasks of one-dimensional movement, which are easier for patients with motor problems to perform, have suggested that anticipat
