The partner's perspective of the impact of pituitary disease: Looking beyond the patient.

People with pituitary disease report impairments in quality of life. The aim of this study was to elucidate the impact of the pituitary condition on the lives of partners. Four focus groups of partners of people with pituitary disease (Cushing's disease, non-functioning adenoma, acromegaly, prolactinoma) were conducted. Partners mentioned worries related to the pituitary disease and negative beliefs about medication, coping challenges, relationship issues, social issues and unmet needs regarding care. This study emphasizes the importance of not only paying attention to psychosocial well-being

Aggression after traumatic brain injury: prevalence and correlates.

Aggression after traumatic brain injury (TBI) is common but not well defined. Sixty-seven participants with first-time TBI were evaluated for aggression within 3 months of injury. The prevalence of aggression was found to be 28.4%, predominantly verbal aggression. Post-TBI aggression was associated with new-onset major depression (p=0.02), poorer social functioning (p=0.04), and increased dependency in activities of daily living (p=0.03), but not with a history of substance abuse or adult/childhood behavioral problems. Implications of the study include early screening for aggression, evaluatio

Assessment of issues facing immigrant and refugee families.

This article identifies the different problems immigrants and refugees face in the United States, especially socioeconomic and psychosocial concerns that often relate to the experience of migration. Traditional familial roles and responsibilities are frequently challenged, exacerbated by sociocultural differences and inadequate understandings between the new arrivals and the host country. Essential in assessments of immigrant and refugee families is evaluating resources for social, economic, and cultural integration; discriminating between realistic and unrealistic expectations; evaluating fam

Psychosocial and physical factors associated with lower extremity injury.

With the increasing availability of modern occupant restraints, more drivers and passengers are surviving high-energy crashes. However, a large number, especially those involved in frontal and offset frontal crashes, incur disabling lower extremity injuries. In the past, not much attention was paid to these injuries, as they were usually not life threatening. Despite the low AIS scores associated with injuries to the lower extremities, they pose a major physical and psychological burden on patients' and their ability to return to pre-crash functioning. Associated injuries, such as mild brain i

Cyclothymic mood swings in the course of affective disorders and schizophrenia.

The authors assessed cyclothymic mood swings and psychosocial adjustment in 38 unipolar depressed, 27 bipolar, 35 schizophrenic, and 27 other psychiatric patients 4 years after hospital discharge and in 153 normal control subjects. The patients were significantly more cyclothymic at follow-up than the control subjects, but there were no differences in cyclothymia between the diagnostic groups. Cyclothymic patients showed significantly poorer posthospital functioning than noncyclothymic patients. These findings raise questions concerning the scope of the hypothesized cyclothymic-bipolar spectru

Development and Initial Validation of the Multidimensional Psychosocial Work Environment Scale for Employed Persons (MPWES).

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial well-being at work is a multidimensional construct associated with employee health, organizational functioning, sustainable workforce development, and population mental health. However, few theoretically integrated instruments simultaneously assess work-related resources, job demands, psychosocial risks, and employee subjective well-being. This study aimed to develop and conduct the initial validation of the Multidimensional Psychosocial Work Environment Scale for Employed Persons (MPWES), grounded in the OECD well-being framework, the WHO-5 conceptual approach, and th

Mindfulness- and relaxation-based interventions for Premenstrual Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects many women of reproductive age, often disrupting daily activities. Mindfulness- and relaxation-based techniques, such as yoga and progressive muscle relaxation techniques, can alleviate both physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with PMS. This systematic review synthesized existing evidence on the effects of mindfulness and relaxation interventions on the physical and psychosocial functioning of women experiencing PMS. The searches were conducted across five databases (PubMed, CINAHL Complete, ProQuest, MasterFILE Complete, and JSTOR Life Sciences) a…

Psychosocial problems observed in older adults after disaster.

Natural disasters are large-scale catastrophic events that seriously disrupt the functioning of a community or society. The frequency and severity of disasters are increasing and involve widespread human, material, economic, or environmental impacts that exceed the ability of the society affected by them to cope using its resources. In addition, disasters significantly affect the physical, emotional, and psychological health of individuals and cause numerous deaths, injuries, and economic losses. One of the most vulnerable groups to the negative effects of disasters is the elderly. The increas

Lithium Versus Other Mood-Stabilizing Medications in a Longitudinal Study of Youth Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Lithium is the mainstay for bipolar disorder (BD) treatment in adults, but evidence in youths is limited. We used data from the C … studies, showing that lithium is associated with decreased suicidality, less depression, and better psychosocial functioning. Given the paucity of evidence regarding lithium in children and adolescents, these findings have important clinical implications for the pharmacological management of youths with BD.

Patterns and predictors of quality of life at 5 to 10 years after heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Although studies have provided us with a cross-sectional analysis of long-term quality of life (QOL) after transplantation, relatively few longitudinal studies have been done that allow us to understand changes in QOL over time. The purposes of our study were to describe QOL over time and identify predictors of QOL longitudinally from 5 to 10 years after heart transplantation. METHODS: All 555 subjects enrolled in this study completed booklets of questionnaires. These patients had a mean age of approximately 54 years (range 21 to 75 years) at time of transplant. Holding the treatment frame: borderline features, personality functioning, and psychotherapy dropout in a youth mental health service.

Baseline personality pathology may shape both everyday functioning and engagement in psychotherapy. This study tested whether maladaptive personality trait domains and borderline symptom severity were associated with psychosocial functioning at intake and whether these variables were related to subsequent psychotherapy dropout within the same clinical pathway. Participants were 124 young adults (M age = 20.81, SD=2.30; 51.6% male and 48.4% female) assessed at intake in a youth mental health early intervention service in Milan, Italy (2024-2025). Measures included the Personality Inventory for …

Functional connectivity correlates of reaction time variability in treatment-resistant major depression.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive difficulties, including problems with attention and executive processing, are common in major depressive disorder (MDD), and strongly predict psychosocial and occupational functioning. Impairment in sustained attention contributes to increased intra-individual variability (IIV) in reaction times observed during cognitive tasks. Understanding brain network changes associated with IIV could guide novel neuromodulation strategies targeting cognitive difficulties. METHODS: We analyzed baseline resting-state fMRI data from 209 patients with moderate-to-severe treatment-resist
