Ninety-one consecutively admitted patients with schizophrenia (n = 21), schizoaffective depression (n = 43), or psychotic depression (n = 27) entered a blind family study along with 36 never-ill controls. Though schizophrenia spectrum disorders clustered within families, they were not significantly more prevalent in the families of schizophrenic probands. In contrast, morbid risks for affective disorder clearly separated the families of psychotically depressed probands from the families of both schizophrenics and controls. Family study data for schizoaffective probands indicated links to both

BACKGROUND: The corpus callosum has been implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, it is unclear whether corpus callosum alterations are related to the underlying familial diathesis for psychotic disorders. We examined the corpus callosum and its subregion volumes and their relationship to cognition, psychotic symptoms, and age in probands with schizophrenia (SZ), psychotic bipolar disorder (PBD), and schizoaffective disorder; their first-degree relatives; and healthy control subjects.
METHODS: We present findings from morphometric and neurocognitive analy…

OBJECTIVE: A sample of patients with a puerperal psychosis of an early manifestation is investigated in respect of special risks of suicide and infanticide.
METHODS: During a 20-year period 96 patients who had been fallen ill with a puerperal psychosis within four weeks after delivery were admitted to a psychiatric university hospital. Patients with an acute exacerbation of a known schizophrenic disorder were excluded. In a subgroup of 37 patients states of a previous (affective, bipolar affective) psychotic illness were recorded already before the puerperal index episode, in a subgroup of 59

Catatonia is a complex neuropsychiatric syndrome, occurring in the context of different psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, in neurological and medical disorders, and after substance abuse or withdrawal. The relationship between Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSDs) and catatonia has been previously discussed, with the three disorders interpreted as different manifestations of the same underlying brain disorder (the "Iron Triangle"). We discuss in this paper the diagnostic, clinical and therapeutic implications of this complex relationship in an adol

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in the ability to adapt beliefs in the face of new information are associated with psychosis and its central symptom - paranoia. As cognitive processes and psychotic symptoms are both known to be sensitive to stress, the present study investigated the exact associations between stress, adapting of beliefs [reversal learning (RL), bias against disconfirmatory evidence (BADE), and jumping to conclusions (JTC)] and paranoia. We hypothesized that paranoia would increase under stress and that difficulties in adapting of beliefs would mediate or moderate the link between str

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of evidence regarding the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in the elderly with primary psychotic conditions, such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. This study examined the efficacy and safety of acute ECT treatment in late-life patients with primary psychotic conditions.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on all patients aged 60 and above, who received ECT within a large metropolitan psychiatric facility in Australia between 2012 and 2018, and who were diagnosed with a primary psychotic condition. Information regarding demog

The concept that fevers can improve the condition of patients with certain medical and psychiatric diseases dates back to Hippocrates. However, with the discovery of penicillin for the treatment of syphilis, which coincided with the advent of convulsion-oriented practices including electroconvulsive therapy and insulin coma for the treatment of psychotic disorders, pyrotherapy soo …

BACKGROUND: Psychosis is a prominent characteristic of manic episodes. We investigated relationships between the presence of psychotic features, the severity of the manic syndrome, and syndrome severity's response to treatment.
METHOD: 179 subjects meeting Research Diagnostic Criteria for a manic episode of bipolar I disorder were hospitalized for acute manic episodes and treated in a randomized trial of lithium, divalproex sodium, or placebo. Factor and cluster analyses were carried out using the clinician-rated Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia, Change version (SADS-C) and

Previous studies have demonstrated that maladaptive behaviours are common amongst adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). Case reports have also previously demonstrated that psychosis can occur amongst adults with PWS. The present study was undertaken in order to gain a better understanding of the psychopathology of the psychosis of PWS. Twenty-three out of 25 adults identified with PWS living in Northamptonshire, UK, agreed to participate. Comprehensive psychiatric assessments (using the PPS-LD), and measures of adaptive and maladaptive behaviours (using the AAMR-ABS) were completed. Compari

The associations among psychotic experiences (i.e., hallucinations and delusions), trauma exposure, and posttraumatic stress symptoms are complex and multidirectional. Using network analysis to understand how psychotic experiences and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) relate to one another may identify new interventional targets to treat comorbidity and its underlying pathological processes. This study aimed to use network analysis to examine the associations among psychotic experiences; negative symptoms of psychosis; and symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression. In this popul

BACKGROUND: Individuals with subclinical psychotic symptoms provide a unique window on the pathophysiology of psychotic experiences as these individuals are free of confounders such as hospitalization, negative and cognitive symptoms and medication use. Brain network disturbances of white matter connections are thought to play a central role in the pathophysiology of psychosis. Based on the structural network disconnection hypothesis in schizophrenia, we expect less and weaker connections, and altered brain network organization in individuals with clinical and those with subclinical psychotic

Psychotic symptoms are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and occur in at least 20% of medication-treated patients. Benign visual hallucinations usually appear earlier, while malignant hallucinations, confusional states, delusions, paranoid beliefs, agitation, and delirium become more frequent with disease progression. Virtually all antiparkinsonian drugs may produce psychotic symptoms. Cognitive impairment, increased age, disease duration and severity, depression, and sleep disorders have been consistently identified as independent risk factors for their development. Although the precise path

OBJECTIVES: Dissociative identity disorder (DID) and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD) share some overlapping phenomenological features making accurate diagnosis more difficult. Childhood abuse and depersonalization have been associated with psychotic symptoms across psychological disorders but their relationship to psychotic phenomenology remains understudied.
METHOD: The present study used quantitative measures to examine (1) similarities and differences in phenomenological voice hearing experiences, interpretations of voices, and thought disorder symptoms in individuals with DID (n =
