Ultrastructural evaluation of the radioprotective effects of melatonin against X-ray-induced skin damage in Albino rats.

Our knowledge about the radioprotective effects of melatonin against X-ray-induced skin damage is still lacking. To examine these effects, an animal model of 60 Albino rats was used. The animals were divided into five groups: Group 1, nonirradiated; Group 2, X-ray irradiated (XRI, 8 Gy); Group 3, XRI pretreated with solvent (ethanol and phosphate-buffered saline); Group 4, nonirradiated group treated with melatonin; and Group 5, XRI pretreated with melatonin. The skin was evaluated for ultrastructural changes using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). When compared to the nonirradiated skin

Medical management of the acute radiation syndrome: recommendations of the Strategic National Stockpile Radiation Working Group.

Physicians, hospitals, and other health care facilities will assume the responsibility for aiding individuals injured by a terrorist act involving radioactive material. Scenarios have been developed for such acts that include a range of exposures resulting in few to many casualties. This consensus document was developed by the Strategic National Stockpile Radiation Working Group to provide a framework for physicians in internal medicine and the medical subspecialties to evaluate and manage large-scale radiation injuries. Individual radiation dose is assessed by determining the time to onset an…

[Reduction of radiation exposure in full spine images in youth].

With a phantom of the vertebral column in 16 measuring series using diagnostic dosimeters the influence of grid, recording voltage, focus-film distance (FFD) and film-foil-systems on the radiation exposure was examined. With identical film-foil systems this resulted in a dose reduction by a factor of 4 to 7 for X-rays without grid compared to X-rays using grid. Therefore in case of follow-ups with questions about the statics of the vertebral column it is recommended to X-rays without grid. The studies can substantiate also the recommendations aiming at the avoidance of long exposure times to a

Relationship of cataract to radiation sensitivity.

Considerable exposure to radiation always causes posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC). This investigation was conducted to ascertain whether cellular hypersensitivity to radiation may be identified as a possible cause of cataract in persons exposed to low levels of radiation. Patients were studied in whom PSC had followed probable exposure to low levels of radiation or in whom PSC had developed before the age of 60 without known exposure. The patients with cataract were compared with age and sex matched controls without cataract. Radiation sensitivity was estimated by measuring clonal growth o

A First-in-Human Complete Insertion of Single-Chamber Cardiac Pacemaker Using Ultrasound.

Pacemaker insertion incurs significant costs for fluoroscopy machines and operator-related musculoskeletal injuries from long-term use of radiation protection equipment. Moreover, there are small potential risks to patients from pneumothorax, lead dislodgment, and cardiac perforation. We report a first-in-human case report of successful pacemaker insertion performed entirely with ultrasound. (Level of Difficulty: Advanced.).

Natural-history Characterization of a Murine Partial-body Irradiation Model System: Establishment of a Multiple-Parameter Based GI-ARS Severity-Scoring System.

The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the natural history of a murine total-abdominal-irradiation exposure model to measure gastrointestinal acute radiation injury. Male CD2F1 mice at 12 to 15 weeks old received total-abdominal irradiation using 4-MV linear accelerator X-rays doses of 0, 11, 13.5, 15, 15.75 and 16.5 Gy (2.75 Gy/min). Daily cage-side (i.e., in the animal housing room) observations of clinical signs and symptoms including body weights on all animals were measured up to 10 days after exposure. Jejunum tissues from cohorts of mice were collected at 1, 3, 7 and 10 d

Ionizing radiation enhances matrix metalloproteinase-2 production in human lung epithelial cells.

Radiation pneumonitis is a major complication of radiation therapy. However, the detailed cellular mechanisms have not been clearly defined. Based on the recognition that basement membrane disruption occurs in acute lung injury and that matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2 can degrade type IV collagen, one of the major components of the basement membrane, we hypothesized that ionizing radiation would modulate MMP-2 production in human lung epithelial cells. To evaluate this, the modulation of MMP-2 with irradiation was investigated in normal human bronchial epithelial cells as well as in A549 cell

Battery swallow-induced tracheoesophageal fistula in a pediatric patient.

Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is an abnormal connection between the trachea and esophagus. Rare acquired TEF arises from trauma, caustic fluids ingestion, and iatrogenic injuries (ventilation, esophageal atresia repair, radiation, or tracheal/esophageal stents). We discuss the diagnosis, anesthetic management, and surgical correction of battery swallow-induced TEF, not previously reported in the pediatric anesthesia and otorhinolaryngology literatures.

Ultrastructure of the pineal gland after gamma-irradiation under conditions of inhibition of adrenocortical function.

Electron microscopy showed that whole-body gamma-irradiation in sublethal doses led to the appearance of injuries in pinealocytes, glial cells, and vessels of the pineal gland in rats. Limitation of the nonspecific effect of gamma-irradiation via inhibition of adrenocortical function with metopirone in physiological doses reduced the radiation-induced ultrastructural damage to the pineal gland.

How significant are the risks from occupational exposure to ionizing radiation?

Radiologists and other physicians practicing in specialties where their principal operational procedures involve the use of ionizing radiation have health risks associated with their occupational exposures. Based on two years of film badge records from this institution, it was estimated that the general radiologists received an annual occupational dose equivalent of 350 mrems. The corresponding doses for therapeutic radiologists and those practicing special procedures and cardiac catheterization were 110 mrems and 550 mrems. The estimated excess cancer deaths for general radiologists would be

Patient-centered imaging: shared decision making for cardiac imaging procedures with exposure to ionizing radiation.

The current paper details the recommendations arising from an NIH-NHLBI/NCI-sponsored symposium held in November 2012, aiming to identify key components of a radiation accountability framework fostering patient-centered imaging and shared decision-making in cardiac imaging. Symposium participants, working in 3 tracks, identified key components of a framework to target critical radiation safety issues for the patient, the laboratory, and the larger population of patients with known or suspected cardiovascular disease. The use of ionizing radiation during an imaging procedure should be disclosed

Surgeons' perception of fluoroscopic radiation hazards to vision.

Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as that used in fluoroscopy, can lead to cataracts. This is relevant in orthopedic surgery as fluoroscopic procedures are commonly performed. In this study, we determined perceived level of: (1) personal risk, (2) awareness of risk for cataract formation due to ionizing radiation exposure, (3) awareness of occupational dose limits for ophthalmologic radiation exposure, (4) current radioprotective practices amongst orthopedic surgeons. Canadian Orthopaedic Association members were asked to participate and 264 responses (23%) were received. Many respondents b

Interventional radiology in pregnancy complications: indications, technique, and methods for minimizing radiation exposure.

Complications of pregnancy, whether they occur during gestation or postpartum, often pose complex challenges because they affect two patients (mother and fetus or infant) and because both short- and long-term outcomes must be considered in management decision making. Interventional radiologists play a critical role in treating complications such as ectopic implantation, postpartum hemorrhage, symptomatic ovarian cyst, post-cesarean section fluid collection, obstructive uropathy, and vesicouterine fistula. Interventional radiology offers therapeutic options that obviate surgery, thereby minimiz

[Measurement of patient skin absorbed dose in ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and examination of treatment protocol].

The ablation for atrial fibrillation minute movement done in our hospital is 250 minutes or less, within an average time of 150 minutes during a fluoroscopic time of about 7 hours, with very large average inspection times numerical values. However, the skin-absorbed dose could be understood only from the numerical value of the area dosimeter. It was considered that the total dose that reached the threshold was sufficient, although radiation injury would not be reported from the ablation currently done at our hospital. Therefore, we aimed to examine the inspection protocol in this hospital, and

Non-targeted and delayed effects of exposure to ionizing radiation: II. Radiation-induced genomic instability and bystander effects in vivo, clastogenic factors and transgenerational effects.

The goal of this review is to summarize the evidence for non-targeted and delayed effects of exposure to ionizing radiation in vivo. Currently, human health risks associated with radiation exposures are based primarily on the assumption that the detrimental effects of radiation occur in irradiated cells. Over the years a number of non-targeted effects of radiation exposure in vivo have been described that challenge this concept. These include radiation-induced genomic instability, bystander effects, clastogenic factors produced in plasma from irradiated individuals that can cause chromosomal d
