PURPOSE: To compare the preoperative signs and symptoms with the histologic diagnosis and postoperative healing at 12 months for 178 periapical lesions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 152 patients who had undergone periapical surgery from 2005 to 2008 were studied. The study included patients presenting with signs and symptoms before periapical surgery with a sufficient tissue sample (periapical lesion) for histologic analysis and a minimal follow-up of 12 months. The signs and symptoms present in the soft tissues at the initial examination were recorded. The histologic analysis establishe

Generalized diminished root formation is a rare condition leading to early loss of teeth. This report describes an unusual case of generalized short roots associated with microdontia, taurodontism of posterior teeth, and multiple dens invaginatus along with short stature in a 20-year-old man, who had lost several teeth because of spontaneous exfoliation.

We describe an orbital abscess secondary to maxillary sinusitis of dental origin focusing on the seriousness of orbital infections and the dramatic consequences of delayed treatment. Classification of acute orbital conditions and appropriate management practices are presented.

This report describes a case of bilateral pneumothorax with extensive subcutaneous emphysema in a 45-year-old man that occurred during surgery to extract the left lower third molar, performed with the use of an air turbine dental handpiece. Computed tomographic scanning showed severe subcutaneous emphysema extending bilaterally from the cervicofacial region and the deep anatomic spaces (including the pterygomandibular, parapharyngeal, retropharyngeal, and deep temporal spaces) to the anterior wall of the chest. Furthermore, bilateral pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum were present. In our pati

BACKGROUND: Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is a rare developmental odontogenic lesion characterized by histological complexity and signifi … lar with variably defined margins and were commonly misdiagnosed as odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) or radicular cyst (RC). One case showed recurrence after 55 months. In the literature, 74 reported GOC cases had a mean age of 44.4 years, with similar male predominance and mandibular predilection (75%). Radiographically, 51.7% were multilocular, 93.2% had well-defi …

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to analyze the features of lesions obtained from biopsies at the periapical area of teeth with a radiographic or clinical initial diagnosis of apical periodontitis.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on biopsies obtained from 1953-2018 at 3 Brazilian oral and maxillofacial pathology centers. Cases of endodontic and nonendodontic periapical lesions (NPLs) with a clinical diagnosis of endodontic pathoses were retrieved. Data regarding patient age, sex, and anatomic location were obtained from patients' records. The frequency and percentage o

The objective of this study was to observe the distribution of macrophages (MPs) expressing transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β1) in tissue samples from patients with different human chronic periapical diseases. In this study, samples were collected from 75 volunteers, who were divided into three groups according to classified standards, namely, healthy control (N = 25), periapical granuloma (N = 25), and periapical cyst (N = 25). The samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin for more than 48 h, dehydrated, embedded, and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for histopathology. Double immu

The distinction of some particular forms of periapical area, involving diseases from regular periapical disease, is a matter of considerable importance when choosing a correct treatment. The aim of this study is to describe the differential diagnosis of periapical diseases from six rare cases in clinical practice. The six rare cases are examples of situations where it is difficult to make a differential diagnosis in clinical practice. By retrospective surveys on the clinical examination, radiographs and pathological results, six patients referred to endodontic treatment in our department were

Basic fibroblast growth factor is one of a class of heparin-binding growth factors that stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and migration in vitro and angiogenesis in vivo. The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of basic fibroblast growth factor in chronic periapical lesions of endodontic origin. Ten chronic inflammatory periapical lesions were examined using immunohistochemical staining. The experimental control group consisted of four specimens of uninflamed periodontal ligament tissue. Two independent observers graded the staining intensity for basic fibroblast gr

Nerve injury can be related to mechanical, chemical, and thermal factors. Infection-related paresthesia is usually related to mechanical pressure and ischemia associated with the inflammatory process. Another cause of paresthesia could be the toxic metabolic products of bacteria or inflammatory products released following tissue damage. This article presents cases of inferior alveolar and mental nerve paresthesia caused by an infected impacted tooth, an infected cyst, and periapical infection. The possible pathophysiologic mechanism of nerve injury, therapy, and prognosis for recovery are also

A total of 102 patients with inflammatory diseases and tumors of the maxillary sinuses were examined and treated using endosurgical technologies. X-Ray computer-aided tomography and magnetic imaging helped determine the access to the maxillary sinus, and the endosurgical instrument was inserted through the anterior wall of the sinus, medial wall, and maxillary tuberosity. Endosurgery was the most effective in polypous sinusitis, mucocele, inverted papilloma, and for biopsy. Endosurgical technologies allow a full-scale surgical intervention with the least invasion.

Red man syndrome (RMS) is the occurrence flushing, pruritus, chest pain, muscle spasm or hypotension during vancomycin infusion. It usually happens as a result of rapid infusion of the drug but may also occur after slow administration. The frequency and severity of this phenomenon diminish with repeated administration of vancomycin. A case is presented whereby RMS occurred while prophylactic antibiotic against infective endocarditis was administered.

The authors, thanks to the application of monoclonal antibodies, as well as the immunohistochemical technique of APAAP, have traced the qualitative and quantitative features of inflammatory cells implied in periapical lesions. Moreover ten patients, of whom 6 males and 4 females aged between 20 and 60 have been tested. The immunohistochemical reactions revealed a heterogeneous population of B and T (T4-T8) lymphocytes, together with myeloid trunk cells (granulocytes and histiocytes). The B lymphocytes form nearly 31.5% of all the inflammatory cell, whereas the T types form about 55.8. The gran
