The rampant basal-cell carcinoma: report and lessons of a case.

The case of a patient with a basal-cell carcinoma over a clavicle that escaped early treatment and became widespreadand deeply burrowing is recounted. It was first treated by radiotherapy, seemed to have been cured thereby, but two years later showed recurrence. It was then treated by Mohs' fresh-tissue technique which cleared the skin but exposed invaded bone and uncertain depth of involvement below. Radical extirpative surgery was subsequently attempted on two occasions, but when invasion was found to have involved major vessels in the neck, further treatment had to be abandoned. Some lesson

Identifying Symptom Clusters for Acute Dermatitis-Exploratory Analysis of a Randomized Control Trial Comparing Mepitel Film and Standard of Care for the Prevention of Radiation Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: A "symptom cluster" is commonly known as two or more symptoms that occur concurrently. Patients with breast cancer often experience multiple symptoms simultaneously. The purpose of this study was to investigate acute radiation dermatitis symptom clusters in breast cancer patients using Mepitel film (MF) versus standard of care (SOC) aqueous cream during radiation therapy (RT). METHODS: A secondary analysis was performed of the MF versus SOC randomized control trial (n = 376) for the prophylaxis of radiation dermatitis in patients undergoing breast cancer radiation treatment. To id

Effect of an herbal gel for the prevention of radiation dermatitis-related symptoms: an open-label randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Radiation-induced dermatitis (RID) is the most frequent side effect of radiotherapy; however, no effective treatments are currently available. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of an herbal gel for preventing RID and associated symptoms in patients with cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cancer patients were randomly assigned 1:1 in an open-label randomized clinical trial. Patients in the prophylactic group received preventative herbal gel treatment (one day before radiotherapy). Patients in the interventional group received herbal gel treatment (upon the devel

Phase II Study of the Effectiveness of the Germinated Wheat-derived Rigenase Plus Polyhexanide in the Prophylaxis for Hypofractionated Radiation-induced Acute Skin Toxicity in Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: To assess the efficacy of the wheat extract rigenase plus the antiseptic polyhexanide spray in preventing and reducing the incidence of grade 2-3 acute radiation-induced skin toxicity (RIST) in patients undergoing adjuvant hypo-fractionated radiotherapy to the breast for cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three hundred and twenty-four patients participated in this study, enrolled in 15 centers in Southern Italy. Rigenase/polyhexanide was applied twice a day, starting on the first day and ending two weeks post-radiotherapy. Patients underwent weekly skin assessments throughout radio

Highly efficient prevention of radiation dermatitis using a PEGylated superoxide dismutase dissolving microneedle patch.

PEGylated superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD) is commonly used as a cytoprotective agent in radiotherapy. However, its effectiveness in preventing radiation dermatitis is limited owing to its poor skin permeability. To address this issue, a PEG-SOD-loaded dissolving microneedle (PSMN) patch was developed to effectively prevent radiation dermatitis. Initially, PSMN patches were fabricated using a template mold method with polyvinylpyrrolidone K90 as the matrix material. PSMNs exhibited a conical shape with adequate mechanical strength to penetrate the stratum corneum. More than 90 % of PEG-SOD was r

Feature-Based vs. Deep-Learning Fusion Methods for the In Vivo Detection of Radiation Dermatitis Using Optical Coherence Tomography, a Feasibility Study.

Acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) is a common and distressing issue for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy, leading to significant morbidity. Despite available treatments, ARD remains a distressing issue, necessitating further research to improve prevention and management strategies. Moreover, the lack of biomarkers for early quantitative assessment of ARD impedes progress in this area. This study aims to investigate the detection of ARD using intensity-based and novel features of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images, combined with machine learning. Imaging sessions were conducte

Validation of the Skin Symptom Assessment (SSA) questionnaire for the evaluation of radiation dermatitis in breast cancer patients.

PURPOSE: Radiation dermatitis (RD) is a painful side effect of radiation therapy (RT). The objective of this analysis was to investigate the validity and reliability of the Skin Symptom Assessment (SSA) questionnaire in evaluating the severity of patient- and clinician-reported outcomes for RD in breast cancer patients by comparing it to a validated assessment tool, the Radiation-Induced Skin Reaction Assessment Scale (RISRAS) questionnaire. METHODS: This study compared patient and clinician-reported outcomes for RD from previous clinical trials conducted in a Canadian cancer centre. The anal

Radiation-induced nasopharyngeal ulcers after re-irradiation with intensity-modulated radiotherapy in locoregional recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients: a dose-volume-outcome analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the interrelation between radiation dose and radiation-induced nasopharyngeal ulcer (RINU) in locoregional recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT). METHODS: Clinical data were collected from 363 patients with locoregional recurrent NPC who received re-irradiated with definitive IMRT from 2009 to 2017. Twenty-nine patients were diagnosed with RINU. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to re-evaluate the first and second radiotherapy plans and to identify predictive dosimetric factors. RESULTS: All dosim

Radiation-induced skin changes after breast or chest wall irradiation in patients with breast cancer and skin of color: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to systematically review data pertaining to breast cancer and radiation-induced skin reactions in patients with skin of color (SOC), as well as data pertaining to objective measurements of skin pigmentation in the assessment of radiation dermatitis (RD). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a systematic review utilizing MEDLINE electronic databases to identify published studies until August 2022. Key inclusion criteria included studies that described RD in breast cancer with data pertaining to skin of color and/or characterization of pigmentation chan
