The stretch reflex is much more complicated than the simple tendon jerk with a monosynaptic reflex pathway. Muscle stretch is not a necessary prerequisite to elicit the short latency EMG excitatory response. Long latency EMG responses are probably of greater functional importance. Capsaicin was administered as an aerosol to unanesthetized guinea pigs in a whole body plethysmograph and intravenously to anesthetized guinea pigs to investigate its mechanism of action. In 1946, Metz described what was probably the first practical impedance bridge for measurement of the acoustic reflex. Over the next four decades, diagnostic use of the acoustic reflex progressed in parallel with instrumentation refinements. Today, acoustic reflex threshold and decay testing are a routine component of the diagnostic audiology test battery. Recent advances in the measurement of suprathreshold latency and amplitude have further enhanced the diagnostic value of acoustic reflex measurement.

Horizontal plane optokinetic (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) eye movements were obtained from normal subjects in response to pseudorandom rotational stimulation. Results showed large intersubject variability in OKR responses. Typical OKR responses had approximately constant gain (Mean 0.65) over 0.02-1.5 Hz. Response phase was near zero below 0.1 Hz with increasing phase lags as frequency increased consistent with time delays of 180 ms (Mean value). In 21 patients with reflex syndromes of cervical osteochondrosis aged 24-63 years the authors studied short latent somatosensory evoked potentials (EP) in response to stimulation of the median nerve, the rate of impulse conduction along the efferent fibers of the ulnar and median nerves determined with the help of the P wave. This study examined the eliciting conditions, response topography and autonomic nervous system (ANS) control of the dive reflex as evoked in humans. Twenty-four subjects received eight trials in each of the three treatment conditions: breath holding without face immersion (BH); face immersion without breath holding (FI); and the "full dive" FIBH condition. Stapedectomy with preservation of the stapedius tendon was carried out on 25 patients. Impedance measurements confirm that the stapedius muscle does function thereafter. The results of stapedius reflex tests are shown by an x-y plotter on an Amplaid 702 for permanent records. The compliance of the drum is also increased by about 50 per cent. The characteristics of the reflex are reported and discussed as well as its clinical value. There is better speech discrimination and no pseudorecruitment.

Intracisternal glycine, but not GABA, activates a series of neurogenic rhythmic contractions of the urinary bladder in urethane-anaesthetized rats. This effect of glycine was prevented by strychnine but not by bicuculline, indicating the involvement of specific glycinergic receptors. The effects of glycine were also prevented by either atropine or haloperidol suggesting an involvement of cholinergic and monoaminergic excitatory neurotransmission to the bladder.

This double-blind study of the effects of diazepam on painful cervical muscle spasms compared with those of phenobarbital and an inert placebo employed clinical, electrogoniometric and electromyographic recording methods for evaluation and computer analysis. The clinical results were equivocal but the technological recordings revealed a statistically significant greater desirable effect of diazepam compared to the other 2 treatments which would be expected to have only minor nonspecific effects.

Twenty-three patients with reflex dystrophy syndrome were randomly allocated to medication with oral prednisone, 10 mg thrice daily, or placebo, previous reports having indicated effect of systemic corticosteroids. The medication was continued until clinical remission, maximally 12 weeks. The responses of nine diabetics (without substantial hearing loss) to Békésy audiometry and tone and reflex decay tests at 250, 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 Hz were determined. Excessive tone decay was found at 8,000 Hz in two subjects. This was found to be significant when compared with a normal group of 19 subjects tested at this frequency. Two diabetics had a 25 to 30-dB separation of the Békésy tracing at 8,000 Hz. All other findings were normal. It was concluded that excessive adaptation at threshold is to be expected at 8,000 Hz in diabetic subjects.
