The control of muscle relaxation is not simply the cessation of a muscle contraction, but a dynamic control mechanism for the next movement. Muscle relaxation is triggered by neurophysiological control of the central nervous system. Here, two relaxation strategies were compared, Ballistic and Ramp conditions, and the dynamics of excitability changes between the two relaxation strategies were analyzed. The Ballistic and Ramp conditions were established using visual triggers and response sounds from 20% of the maximum voluntary contraction output of the right wrist joint. The excitability of the

Sinusoidal galvanic vestibular stimulation (sGVS) induces robust modulation of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) alongside perceptions of side-to-side movement, sometimes with an accompanying feeling of nausea. We recently showed that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) also modulates MSNA, but does not generate any perceptions. Here, we tested the hypothesis that when the two stimuli are given concurrently, the modulation of MSNA would be additive. MSNA was recorded from 11 awake participants via a tungsten microelectrode in

Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is an uncommon yet severe neurological disorder characterized by a combination of clinical and radiological features. Common clinical presentations of PRES include headaches, seizures, altered mental status ranging from lethargy to coma, visual disturbances, and behavior changes. This case report outlines the occurrence of hemorrhagic PRES in an 11-year-old girl with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) relapse. Hospitalized for ALL relapse, the patient underwent reinduction chemotherapy. On the ninth day of admission, she had a general

The purpose of the study was to find differences in the parameters of the response to the blink reflex (BR) between patients with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and health volunteers. A prospective cohort study was conducted over 2 years. The TN-subgroup included 15 patients (mean age / SD 62.3 ± 10.7 years). Pain-free and healthy volunteers as a HV-subgroup (mean age / SD: 30.8 ± 8.1 years) were recruited from asymptomatic students of dental medicine. Diagnostic parameters were determined by measuring latency to the onset of the BR components from electric stimulation. The following bra

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a structural injury or physiological disruption of the brain induced by an external force. The cerebellum facilitates movement coordination and provides a sense of equilibrium; damage to this structure can cause a wide variety of symptoms, including ataxia or dystaxia, ocular motor dysfunction, and disequilibrium. TBIs localised to the cerebellum are rare in dogs, and the prognosis following this type of injury remains unclear.

The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the light-induced pupillary and lacrimation responses mediated by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) in migraine. Ten participants with episodic migraine and normal tear production, as well as eleven visually normal controls participated in this study. Following an initial baseline trial (no light flash), participants received seven incremental and alternating red and blue light flashes. Pupillometry recording of the left eye and a 1-min anesthetized Schirmer's test of the right eye (using 0.5% proparacaine) were perf

Purpose. To report a case of a young patient with a clinical condition suggestive of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) confirmed by genetic testing. Material and methods. We present a case of a 21-year-old Caucasian male with bilateral visual loss. The patient complained of visual loss, initially in the right eye and two weeks thereafter in the left eye. Ophthalmological examination revealed visual acuity of 20/ 400 in both eyes, anterior segment of normal appearance, normal direct and consensual pupillary light reflexes, and absence of a relative afferent pupillary defect. The surgical approaches for spinal tumors, to a great extent, have been developed in accordance with the developments in medical technology. Today, many surgical techniques are implemented as anterior, anterolateral, posterior, posterolateral and combined approaches. Due to its low morbidity, the posterior approach is the more preferred one. Laminectomy is a widely used technique, especially in neoplastic lesions. However, following laminectomy, there are numerous complications such as instability, kyphotic deformity and scar formation. In this paper, the excision of a tumor that was located i

BACKGROUND: The initial symptoms of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) can be similar to a case of spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) located at the cervicothoracic junction. Therefore, SSEH may be misdiagnosed as GBS.
CASE REPORT: A previously healthy 6-year-old girl presented with a 2-day history of progressive pain in the lower extremities and an inability to walk. On initial evaluation, she was completely paraparetic in the lower extremities. Deep tendon reflexes were absent in the lower extremities, and Babinski reflexes were positive on both sides. She exhibited reduced response to

The dorsal root reflex (DRR) and the axonal reflex (AR) are antidromic activities in primary afferents and are involved in neurogenic inflammation. DRRs and/or ARs lead to release of neuropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P (SP). CGRP causes blood vessels to dilate leading to an increase in blood perfusion, whereas SP causes plasma extravasation, leading to edema. Both DRR and AR can be evoked by noxious stimuli. The goal of this study was to determine the role of DRR and AR in neurogenic inflammation by examining the blood perfusion (BP) change in hindpaws in respo

BACKGROUND: Grasping at birth is well-known as a reflex in response to a stimulation of the palm of the hand. Recent studies revealed that this grasping was not only a pure reflex because human newborns are able to detect and to remember differences in shape features. The manual perception of shapes has not been investigated in preterm human infants. The aim of the present study was to investigate manual perception by preterm infants.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used a habituation/reaction to novelty procedure in twenty-four human preterm infants from 33 to 34+6 post-conceptional age.

The med(J) mouse with twisting movements related to deficiency of the sodium channel Scn8a has been proposed as a model of kinesiogenic dystonia. This prompted us to examine the phenotype of these mice in more detail. By cortical electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings, we could not detect any changes, demonstrating that the motor disturbances are not epileptic in nature, an important similarity to human dystonia. The significantly decreased body weight of med(J) mice was related to reduced food intake. Observations in the open field and by video recordings revealed that the mice exhibit sust

A 13-year-old boy, with the diagnosis of congenital adrenocortical unresponsiveness to ACTH (ACTH insensitivity) at age 7, developed a steppage gait, when under glucocorticoid replacement therapy at age 13. The parents were healthy and not consanguinous. On general physical examination, a mild diffuse skin hyperpigmentation was noted. Neurological examinations revealed that all the muscle stretch reflexes of both limbs were absent without pathologic reflexes. Pes cavus was found bilaterally. A slight decrease of tactile sensation was noted distal to the ankle joints. Pain sensation was slightl

Intractable hiccups are an uncommon but clinically significant condition that can lead to sleep disturbance, fatigue, impaired oral intake, and reduced quality of life. The hiccup reflex arc involves complex peripheral and central pathways, with dopaminergic signaling believed to play a modulatory role. In neurologically complex patients, distinguishing medication-related hiccups from structural central nervous system etiologies remains challenging. We present a 94-year-old male with a history of vascular Parkinsonism and multiple comorbidities who was admitted for acute ischemic stroke involv

INTRODUCTION: Trauma is common and may lead to lasting adverse effects on health. Trauma-informed practice does not treat trauma but uses a strengths-based approach to encourage engagement in services.
OBJECTIVE: To understand how physiotherapy attends to trauma-informed principles.
METHODS: This qualitative ethnographic study was set in an Australian hospital. Three data collection methods were used, including observations of clinical practice, interactive reflexive group discussions with physiotherapists, and interviews with patients. Data analysis included an initial inductive phase follo

Mutations in the gene encoding syntaxin binding protein 1 (STXBP1) have been implicated in a wide variety of epileptic encephalopathies. Although the recognized phenotypes of patients with STXBP1 encephalopathies have broadened in recent years, no case of reflex seizures, particularly musicogenic seizures, has been reported in the literature. We present an 18-year-old woman with STXBP1 encephalopathy and seizures that are stereotypically reproducible in response to a variety of audible stimuli. An 18-year-old woman with a history of profound intellectual disability, confirmed STXBP1 genetic de
