BACKGROUND: Pain associated with appendiceal endometriosis can mimic other intra-abdominal pathology. The diagnosis is usually obvious during gross inspection of the appendix; however, the absence of classical macroscopic appearances may lead to missed cases in which the patient's pain is misdiagnosed and inappropriately managed.
CASE: A 34-year-old woman presented with cyclical right iliac fossa pain and an elevated serum C-reactive protein of 13 mg/L (normal < 5 mg/L). Diagnostic laparoscopy showed an isolated appendiceal mass with no pelvic endometriosis, and an appendectomy was performed.

BACKGROUND: Tuboovarian abscess is an unusual obstetric complication that causes maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
CASE: A woman, G1, P0, with a 32-week pregnancy presented with abdominal pain. Physical examination on admission revealed fever and unremarkable abdominal signs. Eleven hours after admission, signs of peritonitis became prominent, necessitating emergency laparotomy. Surgical findings included an 8-cm, right, ruptured tuboovarian abscess with massive purulent contamination of the abdominal cavity. Cesarean hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed.

Lethal-milk (lm), a recessive mutation, occurred in the C57BL/6J inbred strain of mice. Lactating lm dams produce a zinc-deficient milk that is lethal to all nursing pups. If foster-nursed on normal dams, lm pups survive and become reproductively mature. Injection of zinc-glycinate into the pups or zinc supplementation of the water of the lactating dams reduces lethality. Other pleiotropic effects in lm mice include congenital otolith defects with delayed righting, "tail-spinning," and abnormal swimming. These effects are diagnostic criteria for segregation of lm mice among backcross progeny.
