Automated Diagnosis of Hypertensive Retinopathy Using Res-UNet and Graph Convolutional Networks.

Hypertensive retinopathy (HR), a progressive retinal condition, is associated with both hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The development of HR is closely correlated with the severity and duration of hypertension. The results of the HR indicate that pathological eye issues include cotton-like spots, macular oedema, constrained arterioles and retinal haemorrhage. An ophthalmologist would still often undertake a manual physical examination using an ophthalmoscope to detect HR in a patient's body. It is time-consuming for a physician to identify HR in a patient based only on retina fundus imagi

Trabeculectomy Improves Vessel Response Measured by Dynamic Vessel Analysis (DVA) in Glaucoma Patients.

PURPOSE: To determine the effects of surgical IOP reduction (trabeculectomy) on retinal blood flow parameters in glaucoma patients using Dyn … ing the flicker provocation improved from 1.4% before to 3.8% following trabeculectomy (p<0.01). In retinal veins, this parameter increased from 3.1% to 4.6% (p<0.05). In the 7 patients whose arterial and venous reactions to flickering light provocation preoperatively did not differ from healthy eyes, there was no significant change after surgery. The initial …

Suppressive effects of histamine H1 receptor antagonist diphenhydramine on the leukocyte infiltration during endotoxin-induced uveitis.

Histamine has been shown to play an important role in the step of leukocyte rolling, the initial step to leukocyte infiltration into an inflamed region. We investigated the roles of histamine in the leukocyte recruitment during endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in vivo using acridine orange digital fluorography. An injection of histamine into the vitreous cavity of a Lewis rat induced leukocyte rolling along the major retinal veins. In other experiments, EIU was induced in Lewis rats by footpad injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Leukocyte rolling was also observed in the retinal veins of EIU…

Papillophlebitis as manifestation of polyarteritis nodosa.

A 35 year-old-man diagnosed with polyarteritis nodosa developed papillophlebitis on his left eye. Throughout the evolution of the disease, he had a macular oedema treated with intravitreal injections of aflibercept, with adequate recovery of visual acuity. He also had episcleritis on the other eye. Papillophlebitis is a non-ischaemic central retinal vein occlusion of inflammatory cause. Polyarteritis nodosa is a systemic necrotising vasculitis characterised by lesions of small and medium sized arteries. Ocular involvement occurs in 10-20% of patients, and typically affects the choroidal arteri…

[Retinal color Doppler scanning of arteria centralis retinae by retinal diseases and healthy people].

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study was to analyse retinal vascular diseases, a frequent reason for the sudden loss of vision, with the help of duplex Doppler ultrasonography as a non-invasive procedure, and to reproduce the results known from the literature using a common clinical device, thus allowing for an inexpensive out-patient examination. METHOD: 50 volunteers without eye diseases and with normal blood pressure, 8 patients with central retinal artery occlusion, and 24 patients with central retinal vein occlusion were examined. The study was conducted for the first time with a common …

Interleukin-6 in retinal diseases: From pathogenesis to therapy.

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that participates in immunomodulation, inflammation, increases vascular permeability, hematopoiesis, and stimulates cell proliferation, among other biological processes. It exerts effects primarily through the classic and trans-signaling pathways. Many studies have demonstrated that IL-6 plays a critical role in the development of retinal diseases including diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal vein occlusion, central serous chorioretinopathy and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Thus, the progressive de…

Multispectral retinal video-ophthalmoscope with fiber optic illumination.

Multispectral imaging is used in various applications including astronomy, industry and agriculture. In retinal imaging, the single-shot multispectral image stack is typically acquired and analyzed. This multispectral analysis can provide information on various structural or metabolic properties. This paper describes the multispectral improvement of a video-ophthalmoscope, which can acquire retinal video sequences of the optic nerve head and peripapillary area using various spectral light illumination. The description of the multispectral video imaging is provided and several applications are

Use of erythropoietin in ophthalmology: a review.

Erythropoietin (EPO) is a glycoprotein hormone that regulates hematopoiesis in the human body. The presence of EPO and its receptors in different tissues indicates that this hormone has extramedullary effects in other tissues, including the eye. We focus on the biological roles of this hormone in the development and normal physiologic functions of the eye. Furthermore, we explore the role of EPO in the management of different ocular diseases - including diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, inherited retinal degeneration, branch and central retinal vein occlusion, retinal detachmen…

[Treatment of ocular manifestation of sarcoidosis].

Corticosteroid are the main treatment in both systemic and ocular sarcoidosis. Most cases of ocular sarcoidosis, such as iridocyclitis, retinal periphlebitis, optic disc inflammation, vitritis and snowballs can be managed with topical or subconjunctival injections of corticosteroids. However, only rarely cases are systemic steroids indicated. High doses of systemic steroids are effective in unusual manifestations of retinal vein occlusions, retinal and optic disc neovascularization and vitreous hemorrhage. Systemic corticosteroids starting with moderately high doses (40-60 mg/day) with slow ta…

Clinicopathologic features in two cases of multiple myeloma.

Multiple myeloma is a serious and fatal condition with various ocular manifestations. In two of these cases, pathologic findings included opaque ciliary body cysts, a ciliochoroidal effusion, retinal microaneurysms and hemorrhages, and detachment of both the sensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium. In one case, a recanalized thrombus within a retrolaminar vein and direct continuity of a superonasal retinal detachment with a large pars plana cyst was observed. The proteinaceous material in the anterior chamber, ciliary body cysts, choroid and ciliary body, subretinal, and subretinal p

Susceptibility of retinal vascular endothelium to infection with Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites.

PURPOSE: Retinochoroidal infection with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is the most common cause of posterior uveitis worldwide. Tachyzoites spread throughout the body through the blood stream and lymphatics, but preferentially encyst in the eye and other parts of the central nervous system (CNS). It is unknown whether T. gondii penetrates the CNS selectively or whether these sites of immune privilege have limited capacity to eradicate the parasite. METHODS: Human vascular endothelial cell lines, including retinal (three lines from three different donors), aortic, umbilical vein, and
