[Morpho-functional characteristics of reproductive organs of rodents from the area affected by a plant, processing gas with the increased content of sulfur compounds].

The biology of reproduction of 5 rodent species--small gopher (Spermophilus pygmaeus Pallas, 1778), reddish gopher (Spermophilus major Pallas, 1779), sasin lemmer (Lagurus lagurus Pallas,1773), forest mouse (Apodemus sylvaticus Linnaeus) and bank vole(Clethrionomys glareolus Schreber, 1780)--inhabiting the sanitary protective zone of the gas processing plant, was investigated with the use of histological, electron microscopical, immunocytochemical and morphometric methods. Intensification of the reproduction (growth of female fecundity, reduction of the puberty age) in some species (forest mou

Multipixel system for gigahertz frequency-domain optical imaging of finger joints.

Frequency-domain optical imaging systems have shown great promise for characterizing blood oxygenation, hemodynamics, and other physiological parameters in human and animal tissues. However, most of the frequency domain systems presented so far operate with source modulation frequencies below 150 MHz. At these low frequencies, their ability to provide accurate data for small tissue geometries such as encountered in imaging of finger joints or rodents is limited. Here, we present a new system that can provide data up to 1 GHz using an intensity modulated charged coupled device camera. After dat

Host range and genetic diversity of arenaviruses in rodents, United Kingdom.

During a study to extend our knowledge of the host range and genetic diversity of arenaviruses in Great Britain, 66 of 1,147 rodent blood samples tested for antibody, and 127 of 482 tested by PCR, were found positive. All sequences most closely resembled those of previously identified lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus.

Initiation and spread of traveling waves of plague, Yersinia pestis, in the western United States.

Yersinia pestis invaded the continental United States in 1900 and subsequently became established in wild rodent populations in several western states, traversing 2,250 km in approximately 40 years. However, the specific path of the eastward expansion of plague into the United States is poorly understood. We directly calculated velocities of disease spread and performed trend-surface analyses on spatio-temporally unique plague cases to clarify the route and speed of the initial spread of plague eastward. Velocities of disease spread were then analyzed using multiple linear regression models to

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus: an emerging obstetric pathogen?

A report in May 2005 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describing a cluster of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infections among 4 solid organ recipients has increased awareness of and clinical interest in this pathogen. Human infection with LCMV results from direct or indirect contact with rodents. LCMV has particular relevance to obstetrics, as it is likely an under-recognized abortifacient and fetal teratogen. There have been 54 cases of congenital LCMV reported since 1955, with 34 of the cases diagnosed since 1993. Chorioretinitis and hydrocephalus are the predom

Geographical distribution of hantaviruses in Thailand and potential human health significance of Thailand virus.

Phylogenetic investigations, sequence comparisons, and antigenic cross-reactivity studies confirmed the classification of Thailand virus (THAIV) as a distinct hantavirus species. The examination of sera from 402 rodents trapped in 19 provinces of Thailand revealed that five greater bandicoot rats (Bandicota indica) and one lesser bandicoot rat (B. savilei) from four provinces were focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT) antibody-positive for THAIV. One of 260 patients from Surin province in Thailand (initially suspected of having contracted leptospirosis, but found to be negative) showed sy

Ecological characteristics of flea species relate to their suitability as plague vectors.

The ability of vector-borne diseases to persist and spread is closely linked to the ecological characteristics of the vector species they use. Yet there have been no investigations of how species used as vectors by pathogens such as the plague bacterium differ from closely related species that are not used as vectors. The plague bacterium uses mammals as reservoir hosts and fleas as vectors. The ability of different fleas to serve as vectors is assumed to depend on how likely they are to experience gut blockage following bacterial multiplication; the blockage causes fleas to regurgitate blood

[Climate change in spain and risk of infectious and parasitic diseases transmitted by arthropods and rodents].

Due to Spain's being located near Africa, being a stopping-off point for migrating birds and individuals and due to its climate conditions, nearing those of areas where there are vector-borne diseases, this is a country where this type of diseases could taken on greater importance due to the climate change. The possible risk would result from the geographical spread of already established vectors or due to subtropical vectors adapted to surviving in cooler, dried climates being imported and taking up residence. Hypothetically, the vector-borne diseases subject to be influenced by the climate c

Life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi (Acari: Ixodidae) using capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris) as hosts.

The life cycle of Amblyomma cooperi was evaluated under laboratory conditions testing different host species. Larval infestations were performed on chickens (Gallus gallus) and capybaras (Hydrochaeris hydrochaeris). Nymphal infestations were performed on G. gallus, H. hydrochaeris, guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and wild mice (Calomys callosus). Infestations by adult ticks were performed only on capybaras. All free-living stages were observed in darkness at 27 degrees C and RH 85%. Capybaras were significantly (p < 0.05) the most suitable hosts for immature ticks, with the highest larval (63.6%

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Bartonella infections in small mammalian reservoir hosts from different environments and types of climate in Yunnan. METHODS: Femoral blood samples were collected from the anesthetic captured animals from five counties including three types of climate. All isolates were grown on brain and heart infusion agar plates containing 5% defibrinated rabbit blood. The agar plates were incubated at 35 degrees C in a humidified with 5% CO2 environment for at least 4 weeks. Bartonella-like isolates were confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction and visualizing the target gene f

Hantavirus infections in Europe.

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses each carried by a specific rodent species. Three hantaviruses, Puumala, Dobrava, and Saaremaa viruses, are known to cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. In Europe. Puumala causes a generally mild disease, nephropathia epidemica, which presents most commonly with fever, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, impaired renal function, and blurred vision, whereas Dobrava infections often also have haemorrhagic complications. There are few available data about the clinical picture of confirmed Saaremaa infections, but epidemiological evidence suggests t

[Activity of the natural foci of plague in the Northern Caucasus in recent years].

During the last two years the natural foci of plague in the North Caucasus were controlled with relatively low intensity. Nevertheless, every year rodents of different species and their fleas, both infected with Yersinia pestis, were detected in all 5 foci. According to the available data, no intensive, expanding epizootics were registered at the period under consideration. In the areas where stable manifestations of plague, irrespective of the density of the population of vector rodents, were observed for decades only a few infected rodents or local epizootics of plague were mainly registered

Adiaspiromycosis in a European beaver from Sweden.

An infection with the rare mycosis Chrysosporium parvum was diagnosed in a European beaver (Castor fiber) shot in northern Sweden. The animal was in normal body condition and no signs of disease were observed. In the lungs a large number of nodules, up to 5 mm diameter, were observed. A large number of adiaspores were observed in the interstitium of the lungs and in the mediastinal lymph node. A chronic inflammatory reaction dominated by mononuclear leukocytes and giant cells was observed around the spores. This is the first report of adiaspiromycosis (Chrysosporium parvum) in the European bea

[The results of a trial of the insecticidal activity of Oradelt and Omait against rodent fleas].

The paper provides the results of examining the insecticidal activity of the commercial agents oradelt and omait against rodent fleas. The two agents have been ascertained to have a high toxicity for fleas of various species and genera. The field trials have shown that oradelt has a dusticidal effect in the habitats of mountain suslik. The oradelt dust containing 0.05% of the active ingredient should be recommended for controlling fleas in the foci of the suslik-type plague.

Role of lead-binding proteins in renal cancer.

High-dose lead exposure in rodents has been shown to produce pathognomonic lead intranuclear inclusion bodies and to result in an increased incidence of renal adenocarcinomas. Studies from this laboratory and others have demonstrated the presence of high-affinity renal lead-binding proteins in rat kidneys which act as tissue sinks for lead at low dose levels. Cell-free nuclear translocation studies have shown that these molecules are capable of facilitating the intranuclear movement of lead and that they are associated with chromatin. These data suggest that renal lead-binding proteins may pla
