Pilot Clinical Instructor Intervention Raises Potential Clinical Faculty Confidence.

Lack of self-confidence in clinical teaching roles may discourage potential nurse faculty. Academic-clinical partners studied practicing nurses' responses to an intervention regarding teaching confidence and intent. Researchers used a one-group nonrandom pretest/posttest design with two subscales of the Clinical Nurse Educator Skill Acquisition Assessment tool and open-ended questions. Confidence increased with self-rated d = -1.08 (95% confidence interval [CI], -1.60, 0.54), and CNESSA at d = -1.47 (95% CI, -2.07, -0.85) and d = -2.01 (95% CI, -2.74, -1.27), respectively. Several participants

Developing purposeful observation during early clinical exposure in anesthesiology: a cluster-randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Early clinical exposure allows undergraduate medical students to encounter authentic clinical practice, but novice learners may not know what to observe or how to interpret complex clinical events. This challenge is particularly relevant in anesthesiology, where many professional activities are embedded in perioperative workflow and are not immediately visible to beginners. This study examined whether a structured perioperative observation model was associated with improved learning objective clarity and self-reported purposeful observation during early anesthesiology clinical expo

Self-care advice for patients after surgery for oesophageal cancer - a mixed-methods systematic review.

PURPOSE: The aim of the literature review was to identify and synthesise research on self-care advice for oesophageal cancer survivors. METHODS: A mixed-methods systematic review and synthesis of existing literature on the topic. Five databases were searched for studies providing information on self-care advice for survivorship after oesophageal cancer surgery, in English, with no time filter. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program was used to assess the risk of bias. Data were presented by textual descriptions and grouping of data. RESULTS: Among the 13 studies included in the review, five p

Initial evaluation of the effects of competitive memory training (COMET) on depression in schizophrenia-spectrum patients with persistent auditory verbal hallucinations: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates whether depression can be ameliorated by weakening the associations between auditory verbal hallucinations and easily activated networks with negative self-evaluations, by strengthening the access to competing memories of positive self-esteem. Design.  A randomized controlled clinical trial comparing competitive memory training (COMET) with treatment as usual (TAU) in schizophrenia patients with persistent auditory hallucinations. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were randomized into COMET (n = 39) versus TAU (n = 38). COMET consisted

Anger and aggressiveness in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the mediating role of responsibility, non-acceptance of emotions, and social desirability.

According to psychodynamic and cognitive models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anger and aggression play an important role in the development and maintenance of the disorder. (Sub-) clinical samples with OCD have reported higher anger and anger suppression. Patients with checking-related symptoms of OCD showed a less aggressive self-concept as assessed by an Implicit Association Test (IAT). This study assessed anger and aggressiveness self-concepts in OCD as well as possible mediators of the link between OCD and aggressiveness. A total of 48 patients with OCD and 45 healthy controls w

The Experience of Depression, Self-Efficacy, and Family Functioning Among Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Mixed Methods Study [Formula: see text].

BACKGROUND: Mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) report significantly more depressive symptoms, lower maternal self-efficacy, and worse family functioning than mothers of neurotypical children and children with Down Syndrome. There is a need to describe what contributes to high self-efficacy and high family functioning among mothers of children with ASD. AIM: To understand how mothers of children with ASD describe their emotions, maternal self-efficacy, and family functioning, comparing mothers who screen positive and negative for symptoms of depression. METHODS: In this s

Exploring racial dis(con)cordance and self-affirmation in physical activity messaging to Black women.

OBJECTIVE: Black women are among the least physically active demographic groups in the United States, partly due to sociocultural barriers and medical mistrust. The present research examined whether self-affirmation could help racially discordant physicians enhance Black women's receptivity to a targeted physical activity promotion message. METHOD: In a single-session online experiment, Black women participants (N = 370) completed either a self-affirmation or control writing task before reading a targeted health promotion message about increasing physical activity from a Black or White male p

Variation in Students' Experiences and Approaches to Learning During Early Clinical Immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Emphasis is being placed on producing intern-ready graduates who can navigate complex clinical environments. Early clinical immersion seeks to enable this through experiential learning and supported participation in authentic workplaces; however, its educational value remains intangible. Studies have evaluated placement objectives but not other effects in detail. We explored novice students' experiences and approaches to learning during early clinical immersion and factors that enhanced or hindered them. METHODS: Medical students at the beginning of their second year undertook 8

Stakeholders' Consensus on Strategies for Self- and Other-Regulation of Video Game Play: A Mixed Methods Study.

Background: Little is known about strategies or mechanics to improve self-regulation of video game play that could be developed into novel interventions. This study used a participatory approach with the gaming community to uncover insider knowledge about techniques to promote healthy play and prevent gaming disorder. Methods: We used a pragmatic approach to conduct a convergent-design mixed-methods study with participants attending a science fiction and education convention. Six participants answered questions about gaming engagement and self- or game-based regulation of gaming which were the

Digital self-help for people experiencing intimate partner violence: a qualitative study on user experiences and needs including people with lived experiences and services providers.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a prevalent public health issue associated with multiple physical and mental health consequences for survivors. Digital interventions can provide low-threshold support to those experiencing IPV, but existing digital interventions have limited efficacy in improving the safety and mental health of IPV survivors. Digitally adapting an integrative intervention with advocacy-based and psychological content holds promise for increasing the efficacy of digital interventions in the context of IPV. METHODS: This study examines the needs, acceptability and

Who uses self-exclusion to regulate problem gambling? A systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Self-exclusion programs offer an intervention for individuals with problem gambling behavior. However, these programs are insufficiently used. This review describes sociodemographic features and gambling behavior of self-excluders as well as goals and motives for initiating self-exclusion from terrestrial and online gambling. In addition, use of further professional help and barriers to self-exclusion are examined. METHODS: Based on systematic literature search and quality assessment, n = 16 original studies (13 quantitative, 2 qualitative, and 1 mixed method) published b

'I turned in my man card': a qualitative study of the experiences, coping styles and support needs of men with systemic sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Men with SSc have a more severe clinical phenotype and reduced survival compared with women. No previous psychosocial studies have focused solely on men with SSc. This study aimed to explore experiences, coping strategies and support preferences of men with SSc. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An international qualitative research study comprising seven focus groups (three USA, four UK) of 25 men with SSc. Transcripts were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: Three overarching themes and one underpinning theme were identified. In 'impact of SSc on masculinity', the men desc

Pragmatic controlled trial of a school-based emotion literacy program for 8- to 10-year-old children: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders are common in childhood, but many young people do not receive adequate professional support. Help-seeking interventions may bridge this treatment gap, however, there is limited research on interventions for primary-school children. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of an emotion literacy program at increasing literacy, reducing stigma, and promoting help-seeking in children aged 8-10 years. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A two-arm pragmatic cluster-controlled trial will compare Thriving Minds, an emotion literacy program for middle primary school children, to a

First Evaluation of a Novel Live-Chat Service for Preventing Child Sexual Abuse.

Live-chat services are increasingly used for prevention in healthcare. Systematic literature searching found them untested for preventing sexual abuse of children. Our aims were to compare anonymous cohorts using a new live-texting service or an established phoneline with the same prevention aims and drawing on the same responder pool, and explore chat qualities. In the first three months of live-chat, all 120 hours available were used. Chatters (n = 104) were significantly younger than phoneline-users (n = 985), over half of both groups help-seeking for their own inappropriate activities. Sig

Transformative ties: gendered violence, forms of recovery, and shifting subjectivities in Chile.

Although a significant body of scholarship on trauma has emerged in medical anthropology, there has been little examination of how gendered expectations shape the aftermath of extreme human experience, forms of recovery, and subjectivity. Here, I show how domestic and other forms of violence have shaped Luz's suffering in the dictatorial (1973-90) and officially democratic (1990-present) eras in Chile. I then elucidate how Luz's engagement with Safe Space, an NGO connected to UN violence against women frameworks, and other globally connected women's groups, have allowed her to generate transfo

Protocol of a randomized controlled trial to test the effects of client-centered Representative Payee Services on antiretroviral therapy adherence among marginalized people living with HIV.

BACKGROUND: Client-Centered Representative Payee (CCRP) is an intervention modifying implementation of a current policy of the US Social Security Administration, which appoints organizations to serve as financial payees on behalf of vulnerable individuals receiving Social Security benefits. By ensuring beneficiaries' bills are paid while supporting their self-determination, this structural intervention may mitigate the effects of economic disadvantage to improve housing and financial stability, enabling self-efficacy for health outcomes and improved antiretroviral therapy adherence.
