From reverse innovation to global innovation in animal health: A review.

Reverse innovation refers to learning from or diffusion of innovations developed in low income settings and further translated to industrialized countries. There is lack of consensus regarding terminology, but the idea that innovations in low-income countries are promising for adoption in high-income contexts is not new. However, in healthcare literature globally, the vast majority of publications referring to 'disruptive innovation' were published in the last ten years. To assess the potential of innovative developments and technologies for improving animal health, we initiated a literature r

Prior metformin therapy and 30-day mortality in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The pleiotropic effect of metformin prevents lung injury in animal models. However, metformin has a controversial effect on survival outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This study aimed to investigate the effect of metformin therapy before ARDS diagnosis on mortality in ARDS patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: Medical records from the national database, stored and provided by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) in South Korea were used. All adult diabetic patients admitted to a hospital for ARDS treatment from January 1, 2013 t

Presence of the Oriental Rat Flea (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) Infesting an Endemic Mammal and Confirmed Plague Circulation in a Forest Area of Madagascar.

The Oriental rat flea, Xenopsylla cheopis (Rothschild 1903), is a cosmopolitan flea usually found infesting domestic rats. This flea is a well-known major human plague vector in Madagascar. As part of field sampling, fleas and small mammals were collected in the village of South Andranofeno and the natural reserve of Sohisika, two sites of the district of Ankazobe, located in the Central Highlands of Madagascar. Rats inside houses and forest small mammals were trapped using Besancon Technical Services and pitfall traps, respectively. Their fleas were collected and preserved for laboratory work

Arsenic, lead and cadmium concentrations in caudal crests of the yacare caiman (Caiman yacare) from Brazilian Pantanal.

Wetlands are environments of extreme importance due to their high biodiversity and invaluable ecosystem services. Nevertheless, wetlands worldwide are under the increasing threat of the effects of contaminants, which put at risk the biota and the ecosystems. Herein the concentrations of non-essential and toxic elements arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in caudal crests of the yacare caiman (Caiman yacare) from the Brazilian Pantanal, one of the largest wetlands in the world, were investigated aiming to compare concentrations in individuals from a large pristine area (Southern Pantanal)

A pilot study on the foraging behaviour of heifers in intensive silvopastoral and monoculture systems in the tropics.

Intensive silvopastoral systems (ISS) are a sustainable alternative to monoculture systems (MS). The presence of trees and legumes improves animal welfare due to the increased food quality and quantity and the presence of shade while providing a variety of environmental services. As cattle behaviour is greatly affected by environmental conditions, knowledge on the behavioural trade-offs that cattle make to meet their demands while foraging in different grazing systems is important, as this will help us understand the perceived advantages of ISS. This pilot study assessed the behaviour of heife

Soft Drusen in Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Biology and Targeting Via the Oil Spill Strategies.

AMD is a major cause of legal blindness in older adults approachable through multidisciplinary research involving human tissues and patients. AMD is a vascular-metabolic-inflammatory disease, in which two sets of extracellular deposits, soft drusen/basal linear deposit (BLinD) and subretinal drusenoid deposit (SDD), confer risk for end-stages of atrophy and neovascularization. Understanding how deposits form can lead to insights for new preventions and therapy. The topographic correspondence of BLinD and SDD with cones and rods, respectively, suggest newly realized exchange pathways among oute

Cystic echinococcosis in Romania: the pediatric approach.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) has represented a leading parasitic disease in Romania since 1862 when the first case was detected. Following the extremely high number of human and animal cases registered in 1995, Romania was framed in the forefront of Europe and among the first countries worldwide. This review aims to overview and analyze important data concerning CE in Romania from a pediatric point of view. To fulfill these goals, we focused on information provided by major epidemiological studies and rare/unusual case presentations. CE represents a serious concern for both public health service

A status report of veterinary education in Ethiopia: perceived needs, past history, recent changes, and current and future concerns.

Ethiopia, which owns the most important livestock resources in Africa, opened its first faculty of veterinary medicine in 1979. In 2003, in response to a government mandate to increase the number of veterinarians, four new veterinary faculties were founded, but these facilities still have very limited resources. Currently, quality standards and controls for veterinary studies are not established in Ethiopia, and the country does not have any type of veterinary council or oversight body to establish such standards or the essential evaluation and credentialing procedures. The veterinary degree,

Vitamin A deficiency among children--Federated States of Micronesia, 2000.

Vitamin A, a fat-soluble, heat-stable nutrient (retinol) derived from animal sources and certain fruits and vegetables, forms the basic component of retinal pigments and plays a vital role in optimal health, growth, and development. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) (serum retinol < or = 20 microg/dL [< or = 0.7 micromol/L] for subclinical VAD) can substantially increase the risk for childhood mortality from infectious and noninfectious causes. VAD impairs the mobilization and transport of iron and is usually associated with anemia and reduced growth. VAD is a major public health problem in parts of

Higher shock index at presentation is associated with mortality in stray cats at an emergency medical center.

BACKGROUND: Rescued stray cats may present with disease or traumatic injury, but early risk assessment is challenging because background information, vaccination history, and the duration of illness or injury are often unavailable. Evidence remains limited regarding presentation-based indicators that can support immediate clinical assessment in stray cats requiring emergency medical care. This study evaluated whether shock index (SI), calculated as the ratio of heart rate to systolic blood pressure, was associated with mortality in stray cats that were presented to a veterinary emergency medic

Development of a lethal, closed-abdomen, arterial hemorrhage model in noncoagulopathic swine.

BACKGROUND: Prehospital treatment for noncompressible abdominal bleeding, particularly due to large vascular injury, represents a significant unmet medical need on the battlefield and in civilian trauma. To date, few large animal models are available to assess new therapeutic interventions and hemostatic agents for prehospital hemorrhage control. METHODS: We developed a novel, lethal, closed-abdomen injury model in noncoagulopathic swine by strategic placement of a cutting wire around the external iliac artery. The wire was externalized, such that percutaneous distraction would result in vess

[Socio-economic factors and the dietary intake of the adult population of Russia].

The dietary intake of the population depends on a number of external socio-economic and individual behavioral factors. External factors, including physical and economic availability of food, are indicators of food security of the population, the absence of which increases the risk of malnutrition. The importance of the cost of food in combination with the income of an individual or family is an significant factor in food choice, affecting the quality of the diet. The aim of this study was to examine the most significant socio-economic and demographic factors that could affect the nature and qu

[Prehospital cardiac arrest. Therapeutic hypothermia in adults].

Therapeutic hypothermia is one of the few advances in recent years that has improved survival and neurological outcome of survivors of cardiac arrest. Therapeutic hypothermia is part of current guidelines and, therefore, should be part of the routine procedure in postresuscitation care of patients still comatose after primarily successful resuscitation. Early induction of hypothermia may be achieved even in the prehospital setting with different cooling techniques which, however, are less suitable to maintain a constant temperature and additionally do not allow precisely controlled re-warming.
