Controlled hydrostatic sinus elevation: a novel method of elevating the sinus membrane.

Maxillary sinus elevation surgery has been practiced successfully over the past several decades with good outcomes, but tears and perforations still occur in significant numbers. The presumed cause of these problems is the fact that all methods currently used place "point sources" of lifting pressure on the Schneiderian membrane. A new procedure, controlled hydrostatic sinus lift, is presented herein as a safer, more controlled "lifting pressure" which simultaneously places equal force per square millimeter of bone-membrane interface. Hydraulic pressure in a closed system places equal pressure

The Human Amniotic Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hAMSCs) Improve the Implant Osseointegration and Bone Regeneration in Maxillary Sinus Floor Elevation in Rabbits.

Insufficient bone height in the posterior maxilla is a challenging problem in dental implantation. Bio-Oss, though routinely used in maxillary sinus floor elevation (MSFE), is not osteoinductive. Human amniotic mesenchymal cells (hAMSCs) isolated from placental tissues have potential for multidifferentiation and immunomodulatory properties and can be easily obtained without the need for invasive procedures and without ethical concerns. This is the first study to use hAMSCs to improve implant osseointegration and bone regeneration after MSFE. Human AMSCs were loaded into a fibrin gel and inject

Changes of mineralization of free autogenous bone grafts used for sinus floor elevation.

For augmentations before implant placement in areas of minor bone quantity, autogenous bone is considered the reference to all bone substitutes used alternatively. Autogenous bone transplants originate from various donor areas and can be prepared in different ways before augmentation. They may either be used as block grafts or may be milled to granules that can be used solitarily or in combination with a bone substitute. In a prospective study, 61 patients of the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of our University receiving two-stage sinus floor elevation because of insufficient bone supply wer

Morbidity of harvesting of retromolar bone grafts: a prospective study.

20 retromolar bone grafts were harvested in outpatients for augmentation of the implant site from January to June 2000 (10 female, 10 male, 40.9 +/- 12.8 years, minimum 17 years, maximum 66 years). The aim of the study was to assess typical complications of this procedure in a prospective manner. For the determination of the superficial sensory function of the inferior alveolar and the lingual nerve, an objective method was used. The bone grafts were harvested for single tooth reconstruction. In 14 cases a ridge augmentation and in 6 cases an endoscopically controlled crestal sinus floor eleva

Climatic effects on the nasal complex: a CT imaging, comparative anatomical, and morphometric investigation of Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis.

Previous studies exploring the effects of climate on the nasal region have largely focused on external craniofacial linear parameters, using dry crania of modern human populations. This investigation augments traditional craniofacial morphometrics with internal linear and volumetric measures of the anatomic units comprising the nasal complex (i.e., internal nasal cavity depth, maxillary sinus volumes). The study focuses on macaques (i.e., Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis) living at high and low altitudes, rather than on humans, since the short residency of migratory human populations may

Maxillary Sinus Membrane Repair With Amnion-Chorion Barriers: A Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Schneiderian membrane perforation is the most common complication of maxillary sinus augmentation procedures and has been associated with a variety of post-surgical problems. Multiple techniques to repair perforated Schneiderian membranes with materials such as connective tissue, buccal fat pads, and resorbable collagen membranes have been reported in the dental literature. Although these reparative options have proven successful, they are technique sensitive and time consuming. The aim of this case series is to present a simplified method of Schneiderian membrane perforation repai

Closure of 1.5-cm alveolar oral antral fistula with intra-alveolar sinus membrane elevation and bone morphogenetic protein-2/collagen graft followed by dental implant restoration: case report.

Closure of a 1.5-cm oral antral fistula was done in combination with sinus floor and extraction socket grafting using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 within a collagen sponge matrix. The approach to the sinus was transalveolar, with elevation of the sinus membrane done through a molar extraction socket. Following graft placement, soft tissue repair was done with a buccal advancement flap. A dental implant was subsequently placed and restored. Peri-implant bone and implant stability were well maintained at the 1-year follow up examination.

The efficacy of mineralized allograft cortical and cancellous chips in maxillary sinus augmentations.

A mixture of mineralized allograft cortical and cancellous chips was used to augment the maxillary sinuses of 10 patients. Eleven sinus augmentation procedures were performed, and 19 bone cores were obtained at reentry after 6 to 7 months. Computed tomography at 6 months postaugmentation demonstrated bone formation in all sites. Light microscopic and histomorphometric evaluation confirmed bone formation at the treatment site that would receive osseointegrated implants to replace the missing maxillary posterior teeth. These encouraging results support the use of a mixture of mineralized allogra

Maxillary sinus augmentation with a sonic handpiece for the osteotomy of the lateral window: a clinical report.

Several techniques have been proposed to manage patients with insufficient bone height for implant placement in the posterior maxilla. The lateral approach to sinus elevation is a successful procedure, with percentages of success close to 100%. Unfortunately, a frequent complication encountered during sinus elevation procedure is perforation of the Schneiderian membrane. In this clinical report, the authors present the application of a diamond coated sonic tip and an air-driven sonic instrument, commonly used in prosthodontics for the preparation of the lateral window osteotomy during sinus au

Space-maintaining management in maxillary sinus lifting: a novel technique using a resorbable polymeric thermo-reversible gel.

Several techniques have been proposed to achieve sinus floor elevation and the formation of new bone through the grafting of autologous, heterologous, or alloplastic materials. The grafted materials act as a scaffold for bone formation inside the maxillary sinus. This study investigated a non-graft sinus lifting procedure using a resorbable polymeric thermo-reversible gel. A space-maintaining approach to sinus lifting, using a resorbable polymeric thermo-reversible gel, was applied in 11 patients undergoing implant treatment in the atrophic posterior maxilla. After a healing period of 6 months

The efficacy of a tissue-engineered xenograft in conjunction with sodium hyaluronate carrier in maxillary sinus augmentation: a clinical study.

PepGen P-15 Putty comprises anorganic bovine bone matrix (ABM) coupled with a synthetic cell-binding peptide, suspended in a sodium hyaluronate carrier. The P-15 portion exhibits a similar structure and properties to the cell-binding region of type I collagen. This study was performed to evaluate ABM/P-15 putty as the sole graft in sinus augmentation. Ten patients for whom both a sinus augmentation and two implants were indicated in the posterior maxilla were enrolled. Bone cores were harvested at 8 and 16 weeks, followed by placement of one implant at 8 weeks and the second at 16 weeks. Twent
