American Association for the Surgery of Trauma emergency general surgery guidelines gap analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emergency general surgery (EGS) has been rapidly adopted as one of the major components of acute care surgery. Although heterogenous, the most common disease states that comprise EGS often have published guidelines containing recommendations for their diagnosis and management. Not all diseases included within EGS however have published guidelines and existing guidelines may have important gaps in their recommendations. We present a thorough assessment of the existing guidelines for the most common EGS diseases and highlight gaps that will require additional literature review or new

Shape analysis of subcortical nuclei in Huntington's disease, global versus local atrophy--results from the TRACK-HD study.

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by brain atrophy. Localized atrophy of a specific structure could potentially be a more sensitive biomarker reflecting neuropathologic changes rather than global volume variation. We examined 90 TRACK-HD participants of which 30 were premanifest HD, 30 were manifest HD and 30 were controls. Using FMRIB's Integrated Registration and Segmentation Tool, segmentations were obtained for the pallidum, caudate nucleus, putamen, thalamus, accumbens nucleus, amygdala, and hippocampus and overall volumes were calculated. A point distribution model of each struc

MRI-derived three-dimensional modelling reveals cervicothoracic subarachnoid space narrowing in syringomyelia-affected cavalier king charles spaniels.

BACKGROUND: Syringomyelia (SM) is a disorder of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation strongly associated with Chiari-like malformation (CM) in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels (CKCS). Although CM is nearly ubiquitous in the breed, not all affected dogs develop signs of CM-related pain (CM-P) or Syringomyelia (SM), raising questions about underlying mechanisms. CM-P without SM has been linked to brachycephaly, whereas SM involves additional craniocervical conformational changes. This study tested whether CM-P affected CKCS with and without SM were more likely to have reduced cisterna magna volum

Meta-analysis: a tool for constructing theories or evaluating interventions or simply proving everyday assumptions?

After a brief consideration of the development of meta-analyses as a joint discussion of results from a research area across development stages 0, 1, 2, it is concluded that the present form 2.0 is unsuitable to serve as a basis for theory building. Further development of this tool into a meta-analysis 3.0 is necessary for this purpose which requires the validity of the independent variables in the primary studies, the reduction of the error variance of the dependent variables, a stability of the effects over the primary studies and a quantitative comparison between observed and predicted effe

CT texture analysis of mediastinal lymphadenopathy: Combining with US-based elastographic parameter and discrimination between sarcoidosis and lymph node metastasis from small cell lung cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the potential of computed tomography (CT)-based texture analysis and elastographic data provided by endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) for differentiating the mediastinal lymphadenopathy by sarcoidosis and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) metastasis. METHODS: Sixteen patients with sarcoidosis and 14 with SCLC were enrolled. On CT images showing the largest mediastinal lymph node, a fixed region of interest was drawn on the node, and texture features were automatically measured. Among the 30 patients, 19 (12 sarcoidosis and 7 SCLC) underwent endobronchial ultrasound t

Spatiotemporal spread of grapevine red blotch-associated virus in a California vineyard.

Grapevine red blotch-associated virus (GRBaV), the causative agent of red blotch disease, is a member of the genus Grablovirus, in the family Geminiviridae and the first known geminivirus of Vitis spp. Limited information is available on the epidemiology of red blotch disease. A 2-hectare Vitis vinifera cv. 'Cabernet franc' vineyard in Napa County, California, USA was selected for monitoring GRBaV spread over a three-year period (2014-2016) based on an initially low disease incidence and an aggregation of symptomatic vines at the edge of the vineyard proximal to a wooded riparian area. The inc

Automated CT perfusion analysis reveals medial temporal perfusion abnormalities during transient global amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: The underlying pathophysiology of Transient global amnesia (TGA) remains elusive. Reports of perfusion abnormalities in TGA were inconsistent, but semi-automated analysis of perfusion CT (CTP) may improve reliability and precision of perfusion deficit detection. METHODS: Per institutional protocol, all TGA patients undergo multiphasic contrast-CT with arch to vertex CT angiography, intracranial CT venography, MRI, and EEG upon admission. During the study period consecutive patients diagnosed with TGA underwent CTP during the early acute amnestic phase. We retrospectively reviewe

[Image analytic DNA cytometry--a possibility for assessment of prognosis after resection of ductal pancreatic cancers?].

In this study we analysed DNA-ploidy as a potential prognostic parameter in ductal pancreatic carcinoma. Paraffin embedded histological material, obtained by resection from 34 patients with a ductal pancreatic carcinoma, was selected for analysis. Tumor areas within the paraffin embedded material were identified by HE-stained reference sections. One 50 microns section was dewaxed, rehydrated and mechanically and enzymatically prepared to form a suspension of 10000 cells/ml. One milliliter of the suspension, which contained bare nuclei with small rests of cytoplasma, was centrifuged on glass sl

Assessment of the role of small airway dysfunction in relation to exacerbation risk in patients with well controlled asthma (ATLANTIS): an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Recent surveys suggest that asthma remains inadequately controlled in more than 50% of adults with asthma despite guideline-based standard therapy. Small airways are often under-recognised as major sites of airway obstruction and inflammation. This might be related to lack of assessment with current tools such as impulse oscillometry, and thus under-treatment might explain inadequate control. Small airway dysfunction, which is common in adults with well controlled asthma, might represent an important biomarker of future risk of exacerbations. We aimed to investigate whether small a

Forensically relevant anatomical brain regions cannot be sub-differentiated by RNA expression analysis.

The contextualization of biological traces generated by severe head injuries can be beneficial for criminal investigations. Here we aimed to identify and validate mRNA candidates for a robust sub-differentiation of forensically and traumatologically relevant brain regions. To this purpose, massively parallel sequencing of whole transcriptomes in sample material taken from four different areas of the cerebral cortex (frontal, temporal, parietal, occipital lobe) was performed, followed by bioinformatical data analysis, classification, and biostatistical candidate selection. Candidates were evalu

Identification of a biological signature for schizophrenia in serum.

Biomarkers are now used in many areas of medicine but are still lacking for psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia (SCZ). We have used a multiplex molecular profiling approach to measure serum concentrations of 181 proteins and small molecules in 250 first and recent onset SCZ, 35 major depressive disorder (MDD), 32 euthymic bipolar disorder (BPD), 45 Asperger syndrome and 280 control subjects. Preliminary analysis resulted in identification of a signature comprised of 34 analytes in a cohort of closely matched SCZ (n=71) and control (n=59) subjects. Partial least squares discriminant an

Racial and ethnic differences in the risk of recurrent preterm or small for gestational age births in the United States: a systematic review and stratified analysis.

BACKGROUND: The risk of recurrent adverse birth outcomes has been reported worldwide, but there are limited estimates of these risks by social subgroups such as race and ethnicity in the United States. We assessed racial and ethnic disparities in the risk of recurrent adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth, low birthweight, fetal growth restriction, small for gestational age, stillbirth, and neonatal mortality in the U.S. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL Complete, Web of Science, and Scopus from the date of inception to April 5, 2022. We identified 3,540 articles for a title and

Neonatal and fetal growth charts to identify preterm infants <30 weeks gestation at risk of adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether a neonatal or a fetal growth standard is a better predictor of adverse in-hospital newborn infant outcomes. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate and compare the power of birthweight for gestational age to predict adverse neonatal outcomes using neonatal and fetal growth charts. Gestational age-specific birthweight was examined either as a percentile score or as a binary indicator for birthweight <10th percentile (small for gestational age) with the use of 3 fetal growth charts (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, World Health Organization, an

Combining independent studies of diagnostic fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography and computed tomography in mediastinal lymph node staging for non-small cell lung cancer.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: A meta-analysis of diagnostic test performance was conducted to compare the results of relevant studies reporting diagnostic accuracy values for mediastinal staging in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). This paper deals with the two most accurate imaging techniques currently in use: positron emission tomography (PET) with FDG and computed tomography (CT). A statistical pooling method was used to perform a quantitative meta-analysis aimed at demonstrating the potential advantage of one of these two methods. METHODS: Studies in all languages published between

Keshan Disease and Serum Selenium in China: A National Ecological Study Using Bivariate Spatial Autocorrelation Analysis.

Keshan disease (KD) is an endemic cardiomyopathy associated with selenium deficiency and distributed mainly along China's low-selenium belt. Sporadic cases continue to occur in some historically endemic areas despite elimination efforts. The national-scale ecological spatial association between KD prevalence and serum selenium levels remains unclear. This study examined their spatial association in China to support targeted prevention and long-term surveillance. Using 2020 national surveillance data, we applied ordinary Kriging interpolation with an exponential model to map selenium distributi

Contextual Drivers of HIV Vulnerability and Retention in Care in the Central African Republic: An Ecological Analysis.

HIV transmission is shaped by specific contextual factors that are best understood through ecological and geospatial analysis. This study aimed to investigate three key drivers of HIV infection and vulnerability in the Central African Republic (CAR), a country affected by a long-standing socio-political crisis. To do so, we used sentinel surveillance data from antenatal HIV screening between 2019 and 2021 to estimate the spatial distribution of HIV and conducted an ecological analysis to examine its association with (1) forced population displacement and the presence of internally displaced pe

Spatial, temporal, and spatiotemporal analysis of mumps in Guangxi Province, China, 2005-2016.

BACKGROUND: The resurgence of mumps around the world occurs frequently in recent years. As the country with the largest number of cases in the world, the status of mumps epidemics in China is not yet clear. This study, taking the relatively serious epidemic province of Guangxi as the example, aimed to examine the spatiotemporal pattern and epidemiological characteristics of mumps, and provide a scientific basis for the effective control of this disease and formulation of related health policies. METHODS: Geographic information system (GIS)-based spatiotemporal analyses, including spatial auto

Spatial multi-criteria decision analysis for modelling suitable habitats of Ornithodoros soft ticks in the Western Palearctic region.

Ticks are economically and medically important ectoparasites due to the injuries inflicted through their bite, and their ability to transmit pathogens to humans, livestock, and wildlife. Whereas hard ticks have been intensively studied, little is known about soft ticks, even though they can also transmit pathogens, including African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) affecting domestic and wild suids or Borrelia bacteria causing tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) in humans. We thus developed a regional model to identify suitable spatial areas for a community of nine Ornithodoros tick species (O. erraticu

Decoding haptic and imagined stimulus size in the human cortex.

Human neuroimaging studies indicate that the early visual cortex (EVC), including the primary visual cortex (V1), is involved in haptic exploration of objects, even when visual information is not available. However, it remains unknown whether the features of haptically explored objects, like size, are represented in the EVC. Here, we investigated whether we can use the activity patterns in the EVC and other task-relevant brain regions to decode stimulus size during haptic exploration, and whether this effect is due to visual imagery. Twenty-five right-handed participants haptically explored or
