Associative Network Method.

BACKGROUND: The associative network method is a technique for studying social representations of a phenomenon. Although it is little known and used, it can be widely used in nursing research, particularly to understand the representations of a population on a disease or a professional practice. OBJECTIVES: This article aims to describe the associative network method, proposed by De Rosa in 1995, through a concrete example. METHODS: The associative network is a technique that allows us to identify the content, structure, and polarity of social representations of a phenomenon. It was used with

Reconsidering the roots, structure, and implications of gambling motives: An integrative approach.

RATIONALE AND METHOD: Accurately identifying motives to gamble is crucial in the functional analysis of gambling behavior. In this study, a data-driven approach was followed to clarify the factor structure underlying a pool of motives for gambling, selected from the Gambling Motives Questionnaire-Financial (GMQ-F), and the Reasons for Gambling Questionnaire (RGQ), in a sample of regular problem and non-problem gamblers. Additionally, the role of gambling motives in the relationship between root behavioral activation/inhibition systems (BIS/BAS) and gambling severity, frequency, and preferences

Longitudinal associations between social anxiety disorder and avoidant personality disorder: A twin study.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and avoidant personality disorder (AvPD) are frequently co-occurring psychiatric disorders with symptomatology related to fear of social situations. It is uncertain to what degree the 2 disorders reflect the same genetic and environmental risk factors. The current study addresses the stability and co-occurrence of SAD and AvPD, the factor structure of the diagnostic criteria, and genetic and environmental factors underlying the disorders at 2 time points. SAD and AvPD were assessed in 1,761 young adult female twins at baseline and 1,471 of these approximately 10 y

Social ties may play a critical role in mitigating sleep difficulties in disaster-affected communities: a cross-sectional study in the Ishinomaki area, Japan.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between social factors and sleep difficulties among the victims remaining at home in the Ishinomaki area after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and identified potentially modifiable factors that may mitigate vulnerability to sleep difficulties during future traumatic events or disasters. DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted from October 2011 to March 2012 (6-12 mo after the disaster) in the Ishinomaki area, Japan. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine associations between social

Examining the factor structure of health-related quality of life in spinal cord injury using confirmatory factor analysis and multidimensional scaling.

PURPOSE: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a complex medical condition and managing the multiple, co-occurring symptoms and functional and social limitations that follow SCI is a challenging task for clinical care providers. Understanding how the various post-SCI symptoms and limitations are interrelated or cluster together can inform patient care and improve clinical workflows. The purpose of this study was to determine the factor structure of the SCI-QOL measurement system and associated symptom clusters that affect health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in individuals with SCI. METHODS: Particip

Dynamic interactions among schizotypal traits, affective and prodromal symptoms, social functioning in a large sample of college students: A cross-lagged panel network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies suggested that schizotypal traits are closely related with affective symptoms and social dysfunction in general population. However, the dynamic interactions among these variables across time remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate this issue using cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis. METHODS: A total of 9136 college students completed self-report scales measuring schizotypal traits, anxiety, depression, prodromal risk, and social functioning at timepoint 1 (T1) and six months later. Classical contemporaneous network analysis was used to estim

Effects of social isolation on locus coeruleus opioid receptor expression and affective behavior.

Social isolation is a stressor that impairs homeostatic neuroendocrine functions and is associated with the development of several mood disorders characterized by persistent negative affect. Persistent feelings of loneliness have been growing public health concerns for several years and were greatly exacerbated by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The problem has grown so severe the U.S. Surgeon General recently declared loneliness to be an epidemic health concern that is associated with poor mental and somatic health outcomes. Therefore, identifying mechanisms of neuroadaptation that contri

Stress, sex hormones, inflammation, and major depressive disorder: Extending Social Signal Transduction Theory of Depression to account for sex differences in mood disorders.

Social Signal Transduction Theory of Depression is a biologically plausible, multi-level theory that describes neural, physiologic, molecular, and genomic mechanisms that link experiences of social-environmental adversity with internal biological processes that drive depression pathogenesis, maintenance, and recurrence. Central to this theory is the hypothesis that interpersonal stressors involving social threat (e.g., social conflict, evaluation, rejection, isolation, and exclusion) upregulate inflammatory processes that can induce several depressive symptoms, including sad mood, anhedonia, f

Haploinsufficiency of Gtf2i, a gene deleted in Williams Syndrome, leads to increases in social interactions.

Identifying genes involved in social behavior is important for autism research. Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a developmental syndrome with unique neurocognitive features, including low IQ, deficits in visuospatial and visual-motor abilities, hypersensitivity to sounds, hypersociability, and increased general anxiety. The syndrome is caused by a recurrent hemizygous deletion of the 7q11.23 region, containing about 28 genes. One of genes in the region, GTF2I, has been implicated in the hypersociability and visuospatial deficits of WBS based on genotype-phenotype correlation studies of patie

Beyond proximity: how kin network structure and resources shape family relationship configurations in later life.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Family members are a central source of care and support in later life, yet older adults in the United States increasingly live apart from non-resident kin, raising questions about how geographic dispersion shapes relational dynamics. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using nationally representative data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and its Disability and Use of Time supplement, this study develops a multidimensional typology of family relationship configurations among adults aged 60 and older. Latent class analysis of contact, reciprocal support, and emotional

Selected volunteer adolescents in adolescent group therapy.

Twenty-one adolescents had therapy in a group containing three volunteer adolescents over a period of ten months. Fifteen adolescents came to five sessions or more. A description of the group shows how many of the group members model their behavior and attitudes on those of the volunteers. It is suggested that using volunteers is a useful method of initiating and maintaining a group of adolescents.

Lessons learned from community approaches to COVID-19 prevention: a qualitative study with transgender adults in the United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic prompted widespread public health measures, including non-pharmaceutical (NPIs) and pharmaceutical interventions (PIs). This study explores the prevention strategies adopted by transgender individuals and examines how structural and attitudinal factors shaped their uptake within trans-specific healthcare and social contexts. As part of the LITE Connect mixed-methods study (N = 2,092), 30 participants engaged in qualitative, semi-structured interviews between October 2021 and June 2022. Content analysis identified the use of NPIs such as masking, sanitizing, social distanc

Psychological and socio-structural determinants of intentions to use drug checking services.

This study explored the determinants of intentions to use drug checking services among Australian undergraduate students (N = 324, M age = 22.32 years, SD = 7.21) using an integrated theoretical model that includes social cognition constructs (risk perception, subjective norms, attitudes), health and drug literacy, and socio-structural factors (education, race, employment). A cross-sectional correlational survey design and path analysis revealed that social cognition constructs directly influenced drug checking intentions, while drug literacy and socio-structural variables indirectly influence

The social media scale for depression in adolescence.

Social media forms a significant part of adolescents' lives, yet its impact on depression is unclear. We aimed to develop a questionnaire assessing different ways of using social media, and use it to understand potential associations with depression in adolescence. One thousand one hundred and forty adolescents completed an item pool. Factor analyses were conducted to derive the Social Media Scale (SMS). Ant Colony Optimization was used to develop a short-form SMS containing the factors which uniquely predicted depression as determined by structural equation modelling. The 45-item, nine-factor

The Role of Compassion in Shaping Social Entrepreneurs' Prosocial Opportunity Recognition.

Compassion is acknowledged as a key motivational source of prosocial opportunity recognition (OR). This study examines the underlying processes of different types of compassion that lead to prosocial OR interventions designed to solve or ameliorate social problems. Self-compassion is associated with intimate personal experiences of suffering and encompasses a desire to alleviate the distress of others based on common humanity, mental distance and mindfulness. Other-regarding compassion is associated with value structures and social awareness and is based on a desire to help the less fortunate.

The Silencing Effect of Disorganization: Community Structure as a Moderator of the Pathway from Gender Stereotypes to Intimate Partner Violence.

This study examines how community-level social structure moderates the pathways through which traditional gender role stereotypes translate into intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization. Cross-sectional data from the 2023 Jeju Domestic Violence Survey (N = 707) were analyzed using multigroup structural equation modeling, with participants classified by the Social Disorganization Index (SDI) of their residential administrative district. The pathways linking gender stereotypes to victimization differed substantially by community context. In low-SDI communities, gender stereotypes facilitate…

Hierarchical Structure of the Eysenck Personality Inventory in a Large Population Sample: Goldberg's Trait-Tier Mapping Procedure.

The structure of the Eysenck Personality Inventory (EPI) is poorly understood, and applications have mostly been confined to the broad Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Lie scales. Using a hierarchical factoring procedure, we mapped the sequential differentiation of EPI scales from broad, molar factors to more specific, molecular factors, in a UK population sample of over 6500 persons. Replicable facets at the lowest tier of Neuroticism included emotional fragility, mood lability, nervous tension, and rumination. The lowest order set of replicable Extraversion facets consisted of social dynamism,
