Diffuse pulmonary lymphangiomatosis is a rare pulmonary disorder affecting the lymphatic channels from the mediastinum to the pleura. The disease usually occurs in children and young adults and frequently ends with death due to progressive course. Imaging findings of the disease are based on lymphatic involvement which appear as mediastinal soft tissue infiltration and thickening of pulmonary peribroncovascular bundles and interlobular septae. In this report, spiral and high-resolution computed tomography, and ultrasonography findings of severe form of this rare disease are presented. Furtherm

This case depicts an unusual presentation of gout, which could be mistaken for sarcoma. The radiographic and MRI findings suggest gout whereas the CT appearance is most specific. Therefore, CT should be considered when MRI demonstrates low to intermediate T2 signal in a heterogeneously enhancing soft-tissue mass around a joint, tendon, or bursa, especially when radiographs show adjacent erosion with a sclerotic margin. Gouty tophus is not excluded by a normal serum uric acid level. Computed tomography or ultrasound can be used to guide needle biopsy to provide diagnostic tissue.

We present a case of a patient with stenosis of the pulmonary artery which was successfully treated by implantation of a vascular endoprosthesis. A 50-year-old man underwent left pneumonectomy for lung cancer. Eleven months later, a computed tomographic scan revealed a soft tissue mass in the mediastinum and there was severe stenosis of the remaining right main pulmonary artery. A self-expandable vascular endoprosthesis was implanted in the stenotic portion. We used percutaneous cardiopulmonary support (PCPS) during the procedure. We recommend the technique of pulmonary artery stenting using P

We report a case of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA). A 19-year-old male came to our clinic complaining of severe nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Imaging investigations using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging techniques revealed a soft tissue mass in the nasopharynx with minimal extension to the pterygopalatine fossa. After embolization of the internal maxillary artery, we successfully performed endoscopic transnasal surgery for a JNA using an ultrasonically activated scalpel. Endoscopic follow-up for the 18 months after the surgical procedure revealed no evidence o

We describe a case of diffuse superior and middle mediastinal enlargement of soft tissue attenuation noted on helical computed tomography (CT) of a patient with clinical and radiographic findings of congestive heart failure (CHF). Upon treatment and improvement of his pulmonary venous hypertension, a repeat CT scan revealed resolution of the mediastinal abnormalities. We, therefore, advocate a search for primary CT signs of CHF in patients with findings of widespread mediastinal distension. If present, repeat CT scanning after resolution of the cardiac condition should be performed before furt

PURPOSE: This report presents a patient who developed severe buttock pain because of an ossified intramuscular metastasis from a sigmoid colon cancer.
METHODS: This is a case report and review of the literature for intramuscular metastasis from colon cancer.
RESULTS: Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a soft-tissue mass with heavy calcification. Histologically, mature compact bone was observed with adenocarcinoma cells dispersed among the bony trabeculae.
CONCLUSION: When an intramuscular mass is seen, even if it contains extensive calcification, metastasis from colon

Scapulothoracic dissociation has been described as a "closed traumatic forequarter amputation" and is characterized by massive soft tissue swelling of the shoulder, lateral displacement of the scapula, neurovascular injuries (brachial plexus, subclavian artery), an osseous-ligamentous injuries. In addition to the lateral displacement of the scapula, an acromioclavicular separation, a displaced fracture of the clavicle or sternoclavicular separation can be identified on plain X-rays. This injury pattern has been infrequently reported. We present a patient who had a previously unreported combina

A male Sikh presented with spontaneous neck pain. Plain cervical radiography showed gross atlantoaxial subluxation (AAS). Computed tomography showed soft tissue anterior to a subluxed odontoid peg. A diagnosis of atlantoaxial tuberculosis was considered. Confirmation of this would have required a trans-oral anterior cervical biopsy. Despite the paucity of other rheumatic symptoms a diagnosis of Reiter's syndrome with spondylitis was made, and the only surgical procedure required was posterior fusion of C1 and C2, with resultant spinal stability and pain relief. This is the first report of Reit

Caudal regression syndrome involves absence of the sacrococcygeal vertebrae with or without lumbar vertebral defects. Since the neurological condition of infants with this syndrome deteriorates, radiographic studies are important to rule out any surgically correctable lesion. A paraplegic male neonate with a vertebral canal ending at T11 is presented. This is the first report of using magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate the spinal cord and surrounding soft tissues involved in this syndrome. Magnetic resonance imaging provides more anatomical details than myelogram with computed tomography,

Alteration of carpal morphometry after surgical release of the carpal tunnel was investigated in 22 patients with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome, using pre- and postoperative computed tomography. The morphometric evaluation showed an increase in carpal volume which was due to a palmar soft-tissue prolapse in 90% and to an increase of the carpal arch cross sectional area in about 10%. The carpal tunnel release caused a palmar opening of the canal most commonly at the pisiform bone. There was also a variation in form and an increase in volume of Guyon's canal. The results are discussed and re

Intraabdominal panniculitis, also known as lipodystrophy, is an inflammatory condition of adipose tissue that may result in development of large masses containing necrotic fat (nodular intraabdominal panniculitis). Symptoms are secondary to inflammation or mass effect on adjacent organs. Barium studies may show nonspecific inflammatory changes and displacement of bowel loops. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrates inhomogeneous masses containing fat and soft tissue density. The diagnosis of intraabdominal panniculitis has seldom been made prospectively. However, the CT findings are characterist

Primary mediastinal germ-cell tumors are rare neoplasms that usually occur in young men. Computed tomographic (CT) scans in four patients demonstrated large anterior mediastinal masses obliterating fat planes and extending inferiorly along the left mediastinal border. Nonseminomatous tumors contained areas of near-water density (cyst formation and/or necrosis) as well as soft-tissue density. Although CT features may suggest the diagnosis before histologic confirmation, the most important roles of CT are evaluation of extent of disease and monitoring response to therapy.

Patients with ankylosing spondylitis frequently experience back pain and they have a well-known propensity for spinal fractures, but they rarely manifest motor and sensory nerve root impairment. We recently encountered a patient with ankylosing spondylitis who complained of classical spinal claudication with urinary sphincter dysfunction. Computed axial tomography revealed marked lumbosacral lateral recess and foraminal spinal stenosis that was not evident on the myelogram; at operation the stenosis appeared to be the result of extensive posterior soft tissue ossification. This heretofore unre

Application of computed tomography (CT) to neck masses has received little attention. The authors reviewed 10 cervical masses studied with CT as well as conventional imaging modalities. CT was extremely useful in defining both the osseous and soft-tissue extent of the lesion. In several instances, CT was able to show the relationship of the tumor to the spinal canal. When combined with angiography, CT demonstrated the relationship of the major cervical vascular channels to the lesion. Pathological conditions included neurofibroma, chordoma, branchial cleft cyst, neuroblastoma, lymphoma, neuril

Unexpected vascular lesions may complicate standard laparoscopic pancreatic procedures. We report a case of mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN) treated with laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (LSPDP) in which unrecognized immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related periarteritis of the splenic artery caused difficulty during vascular division. A 76-year-old woman underwent LSPDP for MCN. Preoperative computed tomography demonstrated circumferential soft-tissue thickening along the splenic artery. Intraoperatively, the splenic artery was deeply embedded within the pancreatic parenchyma, makin

Accurate representation of facial soft‑tissue thickness (FSTT) is indispensable for finite‑element (FE) head models used in ergonomics, forensic reconstruction and biomedical simulation. This study quantifies layer‑specific FSTT in 1174 Chinese adults (18-90 years) using multislice computed tomography. Soft‑tissue thickness was measured at 33 craniofacial landmarks and partitioned into CT-derived composite compartments corresponding to skin, fat and muscle. Landmarks were aggregated into 17 anatomical regions for region‑based modelling. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed that

Recent developments in the registration of histology and micro-computed tomography (µCT) have broadened the perspective of pathological applications such as virtual histology based on µCT. This topic remains challenging because of the low image quality of soft tissue CT. Additionally, soft tissue samples usually deform during the histology slide preparation, making it difficult to correlate the structures between the histology slide and µCT. In this work, we propose a novel 2D-3D multi-modal deformable image registration method. The method utilizes an initial global 2D-3D registration using an

Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EES) is a malignant tumor that arises in soft tissues outside the skeleton. It commonly involves the paravertebral regions, the lower extremities, and the chest wall, with mediastinal involvement being less frequent. Here, we report an 11-year-old male with pathologically confirmed EES occurring in the mediastinum. Chest computed tomography (CT) showed a large soft tissue density mass on his left posterior mediastinum, containing internal low-density cystic necrotic areas. The solid component was isointense to muscle on T1-weighted imaging (T1WI) and mildly hyperin

Leiomyosarcoma is a soft-tissue sarcoma that accounts for less than 1% of all malignant tumors. Furthermore, leiomyosarcoma accounts for 6% of all soft tissue sarcomas, and leiomyosarcoma of azygos vein origin is extremely rare. In this report, we describe a case of leiomyosarcoma derived from an azygos vein that was completely resected. A 78-year-old male patient was incidentally found to have a mediastinal mass during a computed tomography (CT) scan performed for the evaluation of prostate cancer. Bronchoscopic needle biopsy revealed the mass to be a leiomyosarcoma. Preoperative contrast-enh
