Acoustic patterns of an adolescent with multiple articulation errors.

This is a case study on an adolescent who demonstrated multiple articulation errors. In particular, an acoustic analysis was performed on the same features as those investigated by Kent and Forner (1980) in children with normal articulation and by Glasson (1984) in speech- and language-disordered children. The results of the analysis were compared to the data obtained by Kent and Forner and Glasson. Our subject demonstrated longer phrase durations and more variability than any of the groups with whom he was compared. In addition, he displayed an interaction between syntactic and articulatory p

Multimodal Noninvasive Biomarker Characterization of Structural and Functional Alterations in ADSS1-Deficient Myopathy.

Adenylosuccinate synthase 1 (ADSS1)-deficient myopathy is an ultra-rare disease characterized by progressive muscle dysfunction. The objective of this investigation was to employ a noninvasive biomarker approach to phenotype (fine-)motor skills, communication and cognition in adults with ADSS1-deficient myopathy. Five individuals with ADSS1-deficient myopathy and five age-sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) underwent a multimodal evaluation. Assessments included, (i) evaluation of motor performance, (ii) speech and voice production and cognitive test batteries, (iii) patient-reported outcomes,

Reproduction of inflectional markers in French-speaking children with reading impairment.

PURPOSE: Children with reading impairment (RI) experience difficulties in oral and written production of inflectional markers. The origin of these difficulties is not well documented in French. According to some authors, acquisition of irregular items by typically developing children is predicted by token frequency, whereas acquisition of regular items is predicted by type frequency. The authors hypothesized that acquisition of inflectional markers in French depends on the distribution of irregular, invariable, and regular (transparent) items within a grammatical category. METHOD: Fifteen chi

Intelligent, Flexible Artificial Throats with Sound Emitting, Detecting, and Recognizing Abilities.

In recent years, there has been a notable rise in the number of patients afflicted with laryngeal diseases, including cancer, trauma, and other ailments leading to voice loss. Currently, the market is witnessing a pressing demand for medical and healthcare products designed to assist individuals with voice defects, prompting the invention of the artificial throat (AT). This user-friendly device eliminates the need for complex procedures like phonation reconstruction surgery. Therefore, in this review, we will initially give a careful introduction to the intelligent AT, which can act not only a

Characterizing intonation deficit in motor speech disorders: an autosegmental-metrical analysis of spontaneous speech in hypokinetic dysarthria, ataxic dysarthria, and foreign accent syndrome.

PURPOSE: The autosegmental-metrical (AM) framework represents an established methodology for intonational analysis in unimpaired speaker populations but has found little application in describing intonation in motor speech disorders (MSDs). This study compared the intonation patterns of unimpaired participants (CON) and those with Parkinson's disease (PD), ataxic dysarthria (AT), and foreign accent syndrome (FAS) to evaluate the approach's potential for distinguishing types of MSDs from each other and from unimpaired speech. METHOD: Spontaneous speech from 8 PD, 8 AT, 4 FAS, and 10 CON speake

Predicting dementia from spontaneous speech using large language models.

Language impairment is an important biomarker of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease (AD). Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly natural language processing (NLP), has recently been increasingly used for early prediction of AD through speech. Yet, relatively few studies exist on using large language models, especially GPT-3, to aid in the early diagnosis of dementia. In this work, we show for the first time that GPT-3 can be utilized to predict dementia from spontaneous speech. Specifically, we leverage the vast semantic knowledge encoded in the GPT-3 model to generate

Acoustic features of infant-directed speech to infants with hearing loss.

This study investigated the effects of hearing loss and hearing experience on the acoustic features of infant-directed speech (IDS) to infants with hearing loss (HL) compared to controls with normal hearing (NH) matched by either chronological or hearing age (experiment 1) and across development in infants with hearing loss as well as the relation between IDS features and infants' developing lexical abilities (experiment 2). Both experiments included detailed acoustic analyses of mothers' productions of the three corner vowels /a, i, u/ and utterance-level pitch in IDS and in adult-directed sp

A further analysis for developmental apraxia of speech in children with defective articulation.

This paper reports a further analysis of behaviors that might distinguish developmental apraxia of speech from "functional" defective articulation. Closely following a study of Yoss and Darley, 30 children with moderately-to-severely defective articulation but with normal hearing, intelligence, and language development and with no apparent organic etiology for their disability were matched with a normal-speaking control group. Both groups were given Yoss and Darley's battery of speech and nonspeech tasks. Yoss and Darley's analysis procedure was applied to the data. Their finding of significan

AI-powered analysis of affective dimensions in speech and its relevance for FTD diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: Affective disturbances are common across behavioral variant frontotemporal degeneration (bvFTD), primary psychiatric disorders (PPD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Objective markers are needed for differential and transdiagnostic characterization. We tested whether artificial intelligence (AI)-based analysis of natural speech could provide such markers. METHODS: Speech from 112 participants (bvFTD = 31, AD = 28, PPD = 15, controls = 39) was analyzed using a fine-tuned speech emotion recognition model estimating valence, arousal, dominance, and entropy. Group differences were ass

Deep learning in automatic detection of dysphonia: Comparing acoustic features and developing a generalizable framework.

BACKGROUND: Auditory-perceptual assessment of voice is a subjective procedure. Artificial intelligence with deep learning (DL) may improve the consistency and accessibility of this task. It is unclear how a DL model performs on different acoustic features. AIMS: To develop a generalizable DL framework for identifying dysphonia using a multidimensional acoustic feature. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Recordings of sustained phonations of /a/ and /i/ were retrospectively collected from a clinical database. Subjects contained 238 dysphonic and 223 vocally healthy speakers of Chinese Mandarin. All audio

Speech pattern improvement following gingivectomy of excess palatal tissue.

BACKGROUND: Speech disruption secondary to excessive gingival tissue has received scant attention in periodontal literature. Although a few articles have addressed the causes of this condition, documentation and scientific explanation of treatment outcomes are virtually non-existent. This case report describes speech pattern improvements secondary to periodontal surgery and provides a concise review of linguistic and phonetic literature pertinent to the case. METHODS: A 21-year-old white female with a history of gingival abscesses secondary to excessive palatal tissue presented for treatment.

AUDIX: a knowledge-based system for speech-therapeutic auditory discrimination exercises.

AUDIX is a knowledge-based multimedia system for auditory discrimination exercises. The aim of AUDIX is to provide patients with a computer-based therapy system which they can use between sessions with the human therapist, at home on an 'on-demand' basis. It is centered around computer based cognitive rehabilitation therapy whereas most existing programs in this area are only used for assessment. The auditory discrimination exercise system is designed for adult people who are speech-impaired as a result of a stroke. These people have auditory perceptual problems. The nature of the perceptual p
