Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most important causes of respiratory disease in infants, immunocompromised individuals, and the elderly. Natural infection does not result in long-term immunity, and there is no licensed vaccine. Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is a commonly used vaccine vector platform against infectious diseases, and has been used as a vector for a licensed Ebola vaccine. In this study, we expressed the RSV fusion (F) protein, the RSV F protein stabilized in either a pre-fusion or a post-fusion configuration, the attachment glycoprotein (G), or the G and F pro…

PURPOSE: PFAPA syndrome is a benign, recurrent inflammatory disease of childhood. Tonsillectomy is one of the therapeutic options with a yet unexplained biological mechanism. We tested whether specific lymphocyte subsets recruited from blood to human tonsils participate in PFAPA pathogenesis.
METHODS: Paired tonsils/peripheral blood (PB) samples were investigated (a) from children with PFAPA that successfully resolved after tonsillectomy (n=10) (b) from children with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome as controls (n=10). The lymphocyte profiles were analysed using 8-colour flow cytometry, immu

The molecular basis of the inhibition of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) replication by pure recombinant gamma-interferon (IFN-gamma) in human amnion U cells was examined. A saturating concentration of IFN-gamma induced, at maximum, about a two log10 reduction in infectious VSV yield. The kinetics of induction of the antiviral activity by IFN-gamma were first order over the period of about 6-18 h, following a lag of about 3 h, after treatment with a saturating concentration of IFN-gamma. The relationship of the inhibition in VSV infectivity to the early and late events of the VSV multiplicati…

The nano-enabled crop protecting agents have been emerging as a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable alternative to conventional chemical pesticides. Here, the antibacterial activity and disease-suppressive potential of biogenic copper nanoparticles (bio-CuNPs) against bacterial fruit blotch (BFB), caused by Acidovorax citrulli (Ac), in watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) is discussed. CuNPs are extracellularly biosynthesized using a locally isolated bacterial strain Bacillus altitudinis WM-2/2, and have spherical shapes of 29.11-78.56 nm. Various metabolites, such as alcoholic compound

In stomatal development, epidermal cells progress through distinct stages as they differentiate into stomatal guard cells, a process orchestrated by closely related basic helix-loop-helix transcription factors. In their work, Pablo González-Suárez, Dominique Bergmann, Margot Smit and colleagues present a revised model in which stomatal regulators are not strictly separated in time, and identify late stomatal targets that control stomatal complex morphology. To learn more about their work, we spoke with the first author, Pablo González-Suárez, and corresponding author, Margot Smit, an Independe

Stomata, the gatekeepers of leaf gas exchange, regulate carbon dioxide uptake and water loss, functions increasingly critical as crops face more frequent, intense heat and drought. Under dry conditions, stomatal conductance (g s) typically decreases, limiting carbon assimilation and yield. Heat stress, in contrast, elicits variable g S responses: sometimes increasing to facilitate transpirational cooling, while at other times decreasing, especially when combined with drought. Heat and drought also induce complex, context-dependent shifts in stomatal anatomy. Smaller, denser stomata improve dro

Stomatitis is a troublesome adverse effect of disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) therapy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. This review presents data to examine the incidence, clinical features and consequences of DMARD-related stomatitis, and suggests an algorithm for its clinical management. The specific objectives of the two studies presented here were to determine the incidence of DMARD-related stomatitis and its effect on DMARD continuation, and secondly to identify the clinical and laboratory risk factors. We investigated two cohorts of patients: (i) a retrospective survey…

Tomato Atypical Receptor Kinase 1 (TARK1) is a pseudokinase required for postinvasion immunity. TARK1 was originally identified as a target of the Xanthomonas euvesicatoria effector protein Xanthomonas outer protein N (XopN), a suppressor of early defense signaling. How TARK1 participates in immune signal transduction is not well understood. To gain insight into TARK1's role in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) immunity, we used a proteomics approach to isolate and identify TARK1-associated immune complexes formed during infection. We found that TARK1 interacts with proteins predicted to be associ

Stomata are ancient anatomical structures on leaves that regulate the exchange of water vapor, oxygen, and carbon dioxide between plants and the atmosphere. Acting as valve-like gateways between internal tissues and the external environment, stomata may function as locally interacting networks. Theoretical and experimental evidence suggests that local interactions among neighboring stomata influence their function and spatial arrangement. From this perspective, analyzing stomatal distributions as networks may yield novel insights into observed spatial patterns and their generative mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: Methotrexate (MTX) increases the risk of alopecia and stomatitis, but the prevalence of these adverse events among rheumatic patients taking MTX is poorly defined. We conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to estimate the prevalence of alopecia and stomatitis with MTX in rheumatic diseases.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, The Cochrane Library, and CINAHL databases for double-blind randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with an MTX monotherapy arm. Alopecia, stomatitis, and oral/mouth ulcers data were extracted. The quality of trials was assessed by 2 authors. We inclu…

Feline chronic gingivitis/stomatitis (FCGS) is a painful inflammatory disease in cats. Extraction of teeth, including all premolars and molars, has been shown to be the therapy of choice in cats not responding sufficiently to home care (e.g. tooth brushing) and/or medical treatment (corticosteroids and/or antibiotics). In this study, we hypothesize that a cat food with an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (ω6 PUFA) to ω3 PUFA ratio of 10:1 reduces inflammation of the FCGS and accelerates soft tissue wound healing of the gingiva after dental extractions, compared to a cat food with a ω6:ω3 PUF…

Stomata are pores in the leaf epidermis that regulate the trade-off between CO2 uptake for photosynthesis and water vapor loss to the atmosphere. Stomatal patterning therefore influences water use efficiency and is a target for engineering to avoid drought stress. However, there is limited understanding of how internal leaf anatomy is coordinated with stomatal development, in part due to the technical challenges of assessing three-dimensional anatomy with sufficient resolution. C4 grasses are understudied, and this is a significant knowledge gap, given their file-like stomatal distribution and

Tetraploidization was induced in the drought-tolerant tomato landrace 'de Ramellet' to evaluate its physiological and anatomical response under well-watered (WW) and water-deficient (WD) conditions. Under WW, tetraploid plants exhibited approximately 40% lower stomatal density and approximately 80% larger stomata than diploids. Net photosynthetic rate (P N), intrinsic water-use efficiency, and intercellular CO2 concentration remained unchanged between diploids and tetraploids. Under WD, both genotypes reduced P N and stomatal conductance by similar proportions; however, only diploids decreased

Guard cells detecting fluctuations in ambient CO2 levels and modulating stomatal aperture constitute a crucial adaptive response to changes of atmospheric CO2 in plants. CO2 sensing in animals is closely related to G proteins. Nonetheless, the role of G proteins in high-concentration CO2-regulated stomatal movement in plants remains unclear. Using NaHCO3 as a CO2 source, the results of this study showed that NaHCO3-induced stomatal closure and guard cell hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production in wild type plants were disrupted by Gα inhibitor pertussis toxin (PTX) and in mutants gpa1, cGα/DF, and

Modulation by salicylic acid (SA) and its six esters of stomatal closure was evaluated in Arabidopsis thaliana. The seven compounds tested are salicylic acid (SA), acetylsalicylate (ASA), methyl salicylate (MeSA), propyl salicylate (PrSA), amyl salicylate, benzyl salicylate, and salicin. Among these, MeSA was the most effective to induce stomatal closure, followed by salicin and SA, while ASA was the least effective. Since SA, ASA, and MeSA could modulate plant function, the effects of these three compounds on the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or nitric oxide (NO) in guard cells were
