Lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder in older individuals with a history of institutional upbringing in childhood: the role of social acknowledgement and stressful life events.

Background: Child maltreatment (CM), particularly in institutional contexts, can affect the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research suggests that factors during CM (e.g. severity, variety, duration) and in the aftermath of CM (e.g. stressful life events, and social acknowledgement, i.e. the degree to which an individual feels validated and supported following a traumatic event) can explain some of the heterogeneity in PTSD development. However, there is a lack of research on long-term correlates of CM and mitigating factors, with only a few studies having been conducted

Stress-related cognitive style is related to volumetric change of the hippocampus and FK506 binding protein 5 polymorphism in post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) show a different stress-related cognitive style compared with healthy controls (HC). The FK506 binding protein 5 gene (FKBP5), one of the PTSD known risk factors, is involved in the stress response through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and brain volumetric alterations. The present study aimed to uncover the neural correlates of stress-related cognitive styles through the analysis of the regional brain volumes and FKBP5 genotype in patients with PTSD compared with HC. METHODS: In this study, 51 patients with PTSD and 94

Glucocorticoid receptor activation is involved in producing abnormal phenotypes of single-prolonged stress rats: a putative post-traumatic stress disorder model.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a stress-related mental disorder caused by traumatic experience, and presents with characteristic symptoms, such as intrusive memories, a state of hyperarousal, and avoidance, that endure for years. Single-prolonged stress (SPS) is one of the animal models proposed for PTSD. Rats exposed to SPS showed enhanced inhibition of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which has been reliably reproduced in patients with PTSD, and increased expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) in the hippocampus. In this study, we characterized further neuroendocri

A machine learning approach using migration-related cultural stress to classify depression and post-traumatic stress disorder among hurricane survivors.

BACKGROUND: Data science approaches have increasingly been used in behavioral health research and may be useful for addressing social factors contributing to disparities in health status. This study evaluated the importance of cultural stress-related factors in classifying depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among adult survivors (N = 319) of Hurricane Maria who migrated from Puerto Rico to the United States mainland. METHODS: We evaluated the performance of random forests (RF) and logistic regression (LR) for classifying PTSD and depression. Models included demographic, hurr

Physiological Genomics Plays a Crucial Role in Response to Stressful Life Events, the Development of Aggressive Behaviours, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Physiological genomics plays a crucial role in responding to stressful life events, such as violence and traumatic stress. This exposure to traumatic stress can trigger several physiological pathways, which are associated with genetic variability. Exposure to traumatic stress can result in the development of behavioural and psychiatric disorders, such as aggressive behaviour and anxiety disorders. Several genes play a crucial role in the neurophysiological response to chronic stress and trauma. These essential genes include monoamine oxidase A (MAOA), solute carrier family 6 member 4 (SLC6A4),

Early post-traumatic stress disorder in relation to acute stress reaction: an ICD-10 study among help seekers following an earthquake.

Disaster research related to earthquakes has almost exclusively dealt with their long-term psychosocial impact; besides, diagnoses were previously based only on DSM criteria. Therefore, it is pertinent to assess stress-related reactions of earthquake victims during the early post-disaster period through the application of ICD-10 criteria. For the first 3 weeks following an earthquake, 102 help-seekers were assessed based on a checklist of sociodemographic variables and a semi-structured interview for the detection of acute stress reaction (ASR) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) accordin

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous temporary vagus nerve stimulation for refractory post-traumatic chronic pain and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): first reported case and implantation technique.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and chronic pain frequently coexist and are often refractory to conventional therapies. Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has emerged as a potential neuromodulatory approach targeting autonomic dysregulation and central pain pathways. VNS has traditionally been delivered using either transcutaneous approaches or surgical implantation; however, to the best of our knowledge, ultrasound-guided percutaneous peripheral nerve stimulation targeting the vagus nerve has not previously been described. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a female in her late

The Association of Post-Concussion and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms with Health-Related Quality of Life, Health Care Use and Return-to-Work after Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are at risk for post-concussion (PC) symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The co-occurrence of PC and PTSD symptoms after mTBI in relation to health-related quality of life (HRQoL), health care utilization, and return to work has not yet been investigated. PC and PTSD symptoms were measured six months post-TBI by respectively the Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ) and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). Of the 1566 individuals after mTBI who met the inclusion criteria, 26.1% experien

[Trajectories of childhood psychological trauma: Pathways from stressful events - to mental disorders, recovery, or post-traumatic growth].

This review synthesizes current perspectives on outcomes following childhood psychological trauma. When children are exposed to stressful events with similar objective parameters, they may follow distinct developmental trajectories, including resilience, post-traumatic growth, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or more severe personality disorders. Trauma is a dynamic process shaped by interactions among factors at three levels. The analysis addresses initial conditions of trauma exposure, including pre-traumatic factors such as attachment quality, neurobiological and genetic predispositio

The oval bed nucleus of the stria terminalis endocannabinoid signaling constrains post-traumatic stress disorder-like behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) develops when acute threat responses fail to resolve, resulting in persistent anxiety, avoidance, and hyperarousal. However, the specific neural circuits and molecular mechanisms governing the transition from acute stress to enduring pathology remain incompletely understood. Objectives This study aimed to determine whether endocannabinoid (eCB) signaling within posterior basolateral amygdala (pBLA) to oval bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (ovBNST) projections constrains the maladaptive transition from social threat to PTSD-like anxiety and

Sinapic acid balances the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter systems to mitigate post-traumatic stress disorder-like behaviors.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental illness that can occur in individuals who have experienced trauma. Sinapic acid has been reported to be effective for anxiety as a GABAA receptor agonist, and has been reported to improve cognitive impairment by modulating the GABA/glutamate ratio, but there are no reports associated with PTSD. In the present study, we investigated the effects of sinapic acid in a mouse model of PTSD induced by a single prolonged stress (SPS) protocol. We examined the therapeutic effects of sinapic acid on emotional and cognitive impairment in the SPS mouse mod
