In the natural form of the oral commissure, the outer edges of the upper and lower lips form small triangular flaps. The white line of the lip at the commissure is web continuous with the upper and lower red lips. The lower part of this web is larger than the upper. To repair this so that there is a natural appearance, a Z-plasty and mucocutaneous flap based inferiorly is performed on the transverse facial cleft. The incision line for the Z-plasty is made though each vermilion border and is extended approximately 1.5-2 mm to create the web continuous with red lips. The mucocutaneous flap is fo

PURPOSE: To determine the practice patterns of ophthalmic plastic surgeons regarding the management of actinic keratosis (AK) of the eyelid and periocular area.
METHODS: A brief electronic survey was distributed to members of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery requesting their demographic information and treatment approaches to AK.
RESULTS: One hundred and seven of 523 (20.5%) American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery members completed the survey. Most respondents treat AK < 2 mm from the eyelid margin by excision with permanent path

Surgical management of constriction ring syndrome (CRS) is individualised due to the heterogenic presentation of the condition. CRS includes constriction rings, acrosyndactyly, nubbins and short digits. Involvement of more than one limb is common and children often need multiple surgeries. Each limb may need staged surgeries. If the child has vascular or lymphatic compromise secondary to a constriction ring, the ring needs to be excised and released in the first few days of life. The rings are released using multiple big Z-plasties in one or two stages. Nerve palsy associated with the rings ne

Chondrolaryngoplasty is a well-described surgical procedure most commonly performed as part of facial feminization surgery for transgender patients with a diagnosis of gender dysphoria. A complete understanding of relevant neck anatomy and laryngeal function is critical to optimizing surgical outcomes. The overall goal of the procedure is to maximally reduce the thyroid cartilage prominence while preserving laryngeal integrity and minimizing the risk of external scarring. Among available approaches, the bronchoscopic-assisted technique with intraoperative needle localization has been demonstra

The demand for female genital cosmetic surgery (FGCS) has significantly increased in recent years for two reasons: the advancement of surgical operations and the increased attention to women's esthetic and sexual well-being. Three authors independently analyzed different databases up to April 1, 2024. They selected the relevant data according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Two team members retrieved and evaluated the full text of the articles for eligibility, extracted the data independently, and included populations, intervention type, and outcomes using a pre-piloted standard method. Cosmetic genital surgery refers to various procedures that involve surgical alteration of the vulvovaginal anatomy for aesthetic reasons in women without structural or functional abnormalities. The growing demand for such procedures stems from exposure to media and online content that reinforced the notion that certain genital appearances do not conform to an idealized aesthetic standard. There is, however, a lack of strong evidence and limited published research to support the claim that cosmetic genital surgery is safe and effective. FIGO asserts that it is ethically inappropriate for obstet

Parotid trauma can lead to both short and long-term complications such as bleeding, infection, facial nerve injury, sialocele, and salivary fistula, resulting in pain and disfigurement. Facial injuries inferior to a line extended from the tragus to the upper lip should raise concern for parotid injury. These injuries can be stratified into three regions as they relate to the masseter muscle. Injuries posing the greatest risk of damage to Stensen's duct include those anterior to the posterior border of the masseter and necessitate exploration. When the duct is disrupted, emphasis should be plac

Keloids are raised reddish nodules that develop at the site of an injury. They are characterized histologically by an abundance of fibroblasts, thick collagen bundles, and ground substance. Auricular keloid formation is a known complication of ear piercing. Many types of treatments have been described for auricular keloids.Pressure therapy in combination with surgery, corticosteroid injection, or both is widely used to manage and prevent hypertrophic scarring. Many pressure devices and procedures have been developed. However, all of them are designed for the earlobe region. If a keloid grows i

The coverage of defects is a broad field with which the plastic surgeon is confronted daily within traumatic, tumoral or other context. The various techniques used are skin graft and flaps, forming both heterogeneous groups. Indeed, there are various types of skin graft although a common denominator is the need for a good recipient site in order to allows an adequate "take". On the other hand, flaps carry their own vascularization. Thus, they are not dependent of the recipient site for their survival. Those are divided into three groups: local flaps, pedicled flaps and free flaps. The choice o

BACKGROUND: Skeletal and soft tissue reconstruction after sarcoma resection remains challenging. The use of advanced reconstructive techniques has been shown to improve function and increase rates of limb salvage. This study aims to analyze the utilization of plastic surgery within a multidisciplinary team approach after sarcoma resection at Duke University Medical Center from 2001 to 2014.
METHODS: Medical records were reviewed to determine procedure type, postoperative complications, and tumor recurrence. Observations were stratified by oncologic diagnosis, anatomic location, and procedure

Previous plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation or reduction mammoplasty can potentially alter the lymphatic drainage of the breast. The purpose of this study is to determine the success rates of sentinel node lymphatic mapping in patients with previous plastic surgical procedures of the breast. A total of 83 patients with a history of plastic surgery of the breast that underwent subsequent sentinel node mapping between 1996 and 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. Eight-three patients that underwent a total of 108 sentinel node biopsies. Hundred cases (93%) previously underwent

BACKGROUND: Aesthetic surgery is regarded as one of the 4 pillars of plastic surgery. To assure safety in this field of surgery, a structured and well guided surgical training is indispensable. However, during the specialist training for plastic and aesthetic surgery, plastic aesthetic interventions are often carried out in low numbers only. Objective of the present study was the development, implementation and evaluation of a new training concept in aesthetic surgery.
PATIENTS: Over a period of 2 years, 304 aesthetic operations were performed in the fields of body contouring, breast surgery …

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis is a common gynecological disorder described as the presence of functional endometrial tissue outside the uterus, which can also be found in extrapelvic locations. Although patients seeking treatment for endometriosis usually present to gynecologists, there are rare cases of endometriosis encountered by plastic surgeons in routine practice, either incidentally or as a concomitant finding.
METHODS: We present a rare case of a 36-year-old woman with symptoms of panniculitis desiring panniculectomy. During surgery, an abdominal mass was excised and confirmed by patholog
