Prenatal development of sympathetic innervation of the human pancreas.

BACKGROUND: The sympathetic nervous system plays an important role in the regulation of pancreatic exocrine and endocrine secretion. The results of experimental studies also demonstrate the involvement of the sympathetic nervous system in the regulation of endocrine cell differentiation and islet formation during the development of the pancreas. However, the prenatal development of sympathetic innervation of the human pancreas has not yet been studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pancreatic autopsy samples from 24 human fetuses were examined using immunohistochemistry with antibodies to tyrosine hy…

The endocrine control of the onset of thermogenesis at birth.

The experimental studies in the fetal sheep demonstrate that the central hypothalamic mechanisms for responding to a cold stress have differentiated well before birth. There are several major determinants of the initiation of maximal thermogenesis at birth. These are cutaneous cooling, oxygenation and separation from the placenta. Firstly the stimulation of cutaneous cold receptors regulates sympathetic nervous system activity, primarily local noradrenaline release from sympathetic nerve termini to the brown adipocyte adrenoreceptors. Circulating catecholamines, the euthyroid state and other h…

Reduction of atrial natriuretic factor circulating levels by endogenous sympathetic activation in hypertensive patients.

The effects of endogenous activation of sympathetic nervous system on systemic and regional hemodynamics and on plasma levels of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) were studied in subjects with essential hypertension. Stimulation of sympathetic nervous system was reflex-induced by a selective deactivation of carotid baroreceptors obtained by increasing external neck-tissue pressure (NTP) by means of a neck chamber. The effects of graded levels (+30, +45, and +60 mm Hg) and one single and sustained level (+45 mm Hg for 15 min) of NTP were studied. As expected, NTP caused reflex increases in blood …

Central nervous system and mechanisms of hypertension.

There are several mechanisms by which the central nervous system participates in the neural and humoral alterations associated with various forms of experimental hypertension. Structures in forebrain with multiple integrative roles in neuroendocrine control of the circulation are involved. Tissue surrounding the anteroventral region of the third cerebral ventricle (AV3V region) is involved physiologically in thirst, sodium homeostasis, osmoreception, secretion of vasopressin and natriuretic factor and sympathetic discharge to blood vessels. Destruction of this tissue prevents or reverses many

Hypertension, Anxiety and Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Cardiovascular Disease and COVID-19: Mediation by Dietary Salt.

This perspective paper used a grounded theory method to synthesize evidence proposing that sodium toxicity from excessive dietary salt intake is a potential common pathophysiological mechanism that mediates the association of hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, and anxiety with cardiovascular disease and COVID-19. Increased anxiety in these conditions may be linked to a high-salt diet through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, which increases blood pressure while releasing catecholamines, causing a "fight or flight" response. A rostral shift of fluid overload from the lower to t…

Endogenous cardiotonic steroids in kidney failure: a review and an hypothesis.

In response to progressive nephron loss, volume and humoral signals in the circulation have increasing relevance. These signals, including plasma sodium, angiotensin II, and those related to volume status, activate a slow neuromodulatory pathway within the central nervous system (CNS). The slow CNS pathway includes specific receptors for angiotensin II, mineralocorticoids, and endogenous ouabain (EO). Stimulation of the pathway leads to elevated sympathetic nervous system activity (SNA) and increased circulating EO. The sustained elevation of circulating EO (or ouabain) stimulates central and …

Use of prazosin in the treatment of scorpion envenomation.

Although scorpion bite is usually lethal in children under 6, sometimes it might cause death for those over 6. Acute lethal systemic seizures (cardiovascular and central nervous systems) have been frequently reported from the countryside of developing countries. Numerous researchers have suggested quite different approaches to the treatment of scorpion bites. In this report, we describe a case brought to the emergency service after the patient had been bitten by a scorpion and had significant sympathetic nervous system symptoms. The patient was treated with prazosin successfully.

Heart rate variability in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury during a single session of paired associative stimulation.

Heart-rate variability (HRV) reflects the balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems and is commonly used as a biomarker for the state of the autonomous nervous system (ANS). Acute pain can also be detected by HRV. We applied a single session of paired-associative stimulation (high-PAS) combining high-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and high-frequency peripheral-nerve stimulation (PNS) on patients with incomplete cervical spinal-cord injury (SCI). High-PAS has shown promising results in improving motor function after incomplete SCI. The cardiovascular eff…

Autonomic nerve activity and atrial fibrillation.

This review focuses on the importance of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity in the induction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF). Clinical studies suggest that both sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are important in mediating PAF. Consistent with that hypothesis, heart rate variability analyses showed that sympathovagal imbalance is present before the onset of PAF episodes. The importance of the ANS in PAF is further supported by animal experiments and recent clinical studies showing that vagal denervation enhances the efficacy of circumferential pulmonary vein ablation …

Decoding cardiac reinnervation from cardiac autonomic markers: A mathematical model approach.

BACKGROUND: Although cardiac autonomic markers (CAMs) are commonly used to assess cardiac reinnervation in heart-transplant patients, their relationship to the degree of sympathetic and vagal cardiac reinnervation is not well understood yet. To study this relationship, we applied a mathematical model of the cardiovascular system and its autonomic control. METHODS: By simulating varying levels of sympathetic and vagal efferent sinoatrial reinnervation, we analyzed the induced changes in CAMs including resting heart rate (HR), bradycardic and tachycardic HR response to Valsalva maneuver, root m

A pilot study: the role of the autonomic nervous system in cardiorespiratory regulation in infant feeding.

AIM: The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the interplay between the parasympathetic (PNS) and sympathetic nervous systems' (SNS) contributions to prefeeding, feeding and satiation in young, healthy infants. METHOD: This prospective study was completed on eleven full-term infants, less than 6 months old. Respiratory rate, heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), electrodermal activity and low-frequency/high-frequency heart rate variability ratio were sampled from the infant during prefeeding, feeding and satiation periods. RESULTS: A repeated-measures ANOVA revealed a significant d…

An unusual giant schwannoma of cervical sympathetic chain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Schwannomas are benign, well-differentiated tumors that originate from Schwann cells. Involvement of the cervical sympathetic nerve is relatively rare. Computed tomography is indispensable for the diagnosis. The treatment is surgical. Histological examination confirms the diagnosis. Horner's syndrome postoperatively is supportive of the diagnosis. The rarity of giant cervical sympathetic chain schwannoma made the case of our patient interesting to report. Furthermore, our patient's immense tumor size is very rare, and we could not find any similar report in the literature. Cervical

Systemic autonomic involvement in episodic cluster headache: a comparison between active and remission periods.

In this study we compared systemic autonomic involvement in episodic cluster headache during active and silent periods. Seventeen patients were studied with sympathetic skin response, lying to standing test, Valsalva manoeuvre, deep breathing test and orthostatic hypotension evaluation. Each of them underwent these tests during active and silent periods. Values were then compared with normal controls. Our data show a parasympathetic, but not sympathetic, involvement. Moreover, this impairment seems to be "chronic", as it persists beyond the active period.

Sympathetic--parasympathetic interaction and sudden death.

The effects of the autonomic nervous system on malignant arrhythmias, particularly in the setting of ischemic heart disease, have been widely investigated and described. Specifically, it has been shown that while sympathetic hyperactivity is arrhythmogenic, an increased vagal activity often exerts a beneficial effect. New insights on the relationship between autonomic activity and sudden cardiac death have been obtained in conscious dogs in which a healed myocardial infarction, acute myocardial ischemia, and exercise are combined. In this chronic animal model it was shown that myocardial infar

Synchronization of cardiac autonomic neural discharge with epileptogenic activity: the lockstep phenomenon.

Autonomic dysfunction has been implicated in the sudden, unexplained deaths which account for 5-17% of mortality in persons with epilepsy. This study was designed to determine if epileptogenic activity is associated with changes in the pattern of autonomic cardiac neural discharge and the development of arrhythmias. Nine cats, anesthetized with alpha-chloralose, received pentylenetetrazol (PTZ) 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 2000 mg/kg, i.v. at 10 min intervals. Cardiac postganglionic sympathetic and vagal nerve discharges were correlated with the interictal spikes, brief ictal discharges (bilateral

Malignant melanoma of the sympathetic chain: with a consideration of pigmented nerve sheath tumours.

A case of malignant melanoma of the posterior mediastinum, arising from the sympathetic chain is reported. The structural features and the presence of long-spaced collagen on electron microscopic examination suggest schwannian derivation of the tumour. Similar tumours are reviewed and the histogenesis of pigmented nerve sheath tumours in general is discussed. The term 'malignant melanotic schwannoma' is probably the most appropriate for the tumour entity described here.

New approaches to regulation of fluid secretion in airways.

Physiologic, morphologic, biochemical, and immunologic methods have been used to study cholinergic and adrenergic regulation of airway submucosal gland secretion. Using a newly developed micropipette method, we can now measure the rate of fluid flow from each individual gland duct and we can harvest these secretions for specific chemical analysis. Stimulation of both the cholinergic and adrenergic systems affect gland secretions. The vagus nerves are the pathways for many reflexes affecting secretion: laryngeal, gastric and carotid body chemoreceptor stimulation accelerate the fluid production

[Parkinson's disease, dysautonomy, and auto-antibodies directed against sympathetic neurones (author's transl)].

A study was conducted to evaluate possible correlations between auto-antibodies directed against sympathetic structures (Ab. S), in Parkinson's disease and the dysautonomy that may be associated with it, in 85 Parkinsonian patients and 85 controls. In all the patients with Parkinson's disease, the immunological study was coupled with an evaluation of functional signs of anomalies of neurovegetative function, and tests for postural hypotension. The results confirm the remarkable frequency of these auto-antibodies in patients with Parkinson's disease (66%), whereas they were present in only 20%
