Advancing the modified face name associative memory exam in cognitive aging research: insights into connectomic correlates and task reliability.

INTRODUCTION: The shift toward earlier detection in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum underscores the need for more sensitive cognitive outcome assessments (COAs). Traditional COAs may lack precision in capturing cognitive dysfunction during preclinical stages. The Face-Name Associative Memory Exam (FNAME), a cross-modal task that integrates verbal and non-verbal memory, offers enhanced sensitivity and has shown associations with amyloid-β burden across the AD continuum, even in asymptomatic older adults. METHODS: This manuscript reports on two experiments, broadening insights into this

Prior knowledge-guided vision-transformer-based unsupervised domain adaptation for intubation prediction in lung disease at one week.

Data-driven approaches have achieved great success in various medical image analysis tasks. However, fully-supervised data-driven approaches require unprecedentedly large amounts of labeled data and often suffer from poor generalization to unseen new data due to domain shifts. Various unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) methods have been actively explored to solve these problems. Anatomical and spatial priors in medical imaging are common and have been incorporated into data-driven approaches to ease the need for labeled data as well as to achieve better generalization and interpretation. Physical Activity and Pregnancy Norms Among Daasanach Semi-Nomadic Pastoralist Women in Northern Kenya.

OBJECTIVES: In subsistence populations, high physical activity is typically maintained throughout pregnancy. Market integration shifts activity patterns to resemble industrialized populations, with more time allocated to sedentary behavior. Daasanach semi-nomadic pastoralists living in northern Kenya face lifestyle heterogeneity due to the emergence of a market center. We investigate how Daasanach women manage the energetic demands of pregnancy with subsistence labor tasks and how market integration relates to variation in energetic demands, physical activity, and coping strategies. METHODS:

Effects of the atypical antipsychotic and D3/D2 dopamine partial agonist cariprazine on effort-based choice behavior: implications for modeling avolition.

RATIONALE: Cariprazine is an atypical antipsychotic that acts as a D3/D2 receptor partial agonist. In addition to treating positive symptoms of schizophrenia, cariprazine may have utility for treating negative symptoms. Rodent studies have focused on the effects of cariprazine on cognitive functions and behaviors thought to be related to anhedonia. Avolition, which is characterized by reduced initiation and persistence of goal-directed behavior, is another important negative symptom. OBJECTIVES: Effort-related choice tasks have been used as animal models of avolition. In these studies, caripr

Time of day, time of sleep, and time on task effects on sleepiness and cognitive performance of bus drivers.

PURPOSE: Optimal cognitive performance might prevent vehicle accidents. Identifying time-related circadian and homeostatic parameters having an impact on cognitive performance of drivers may be crucial to optimize drivers' performance. METHODS: In this prospective study conducted on bus drivers, two drivers alternated driving during a 24-h round trip and were accompanied by an interviewer. Each driver was tested using Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and the reversed digit span Wechsler Working Memory test before the start of his shift and then every 6 h during a "work/driving" day. The effect of high vs. low dose lurasidone on eye movement biomarkers of prefrontal abilities in treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Eye movement (EM) measures can serve as biomarkers to evaluate pharmacological effects on brain systems involved in cognition. In recent onset schizophrenia, antipsychotic treatment can improve attentional control on the antisaccade task and exacerbate working memory impairment on the memory guided saccade task; effects in treatment-resistant schizophrenia (TRS) are less clear. This study evaluated the effects of high versus low dose lurasidone on EM performance in TRS. METHODS: TRS patients completed EM testing: 1) at baseline, on existing medication regimen (n = 42), 2) after 6 w

Sex-Specific Effects of Childhood Poverty on Neurocircuitry of Processing of Emotional Cues: A Neuroimaging Study.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence on the negative impacts of childhood poverty on physical and mental health. Previous work has suggested hyperactive neural response to social fear cues, as well as impairment in neural regulatory functions. However, despite differences found between males and females in stress-related and anxiety disorders, possible sex-specific effects of poverty on emotional processing have not been explored. METHODS: We analyzed data from three previously reported experiments of childhood poverty effects on emotional processing and regulation, for sex-specific eff

Training Persons with Spinal Cord Injury to Ambulate Using a Powered Exoskeleton.

Powered exoskeletons have become available for overground ambulation in persons with paralyses due to spinal cord injury (SCI) who have intact upper extremity function and are able to maintain upright balance using forearm crutches. To ambulate in an exoskeleton, the user must acquire the ability to maintain balance while standing, sitting and appropriate weight shifting with each step. This can be a challenging task for those with deficits in sensation and proprioception in their lower extremities. This manuscript describes screening criteria and a training program developed at the James J. P

Action can amplify motion-induced illusory displacement.

Local motion is known to produce strong illusory displacement in the perceived position of globally static objects. For example, if a dot-cloud or grating drifts to the left within a stationary aperture, the perceived position of the whole aperture will also be shifted to the left. Previously, we used a simple tracking task to demonstrate that active control over the global position of an object did not eliminate this form of illusion. Here, we used a new iPad task to directly compare the magnitude of illusory displacement under active and passive conditions. In the active condition, participa

Joint principles of motor and cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Traditionally, the lateral premotor cortex (PM) is assigned a role in stimulus-driven rather than memory-driven motor control, whereas the opposite holds for the mesial premotor cortex (supplementary motor area, SMA). Consistently, patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), in which a specific functional degradation of the mesial loop (i.e., SMA-Striatum) occurs, show impaired memory-driven but relatively preserved stimulus-driven motor control. However, both parts of the premotor cortex are involved in perceptual prediction tasks as well. Here we tested whether the functional bias described on t

An fMRI examination of developmental differences in the neural correlates of uncertainty and decision-making.

BACKGROUND: Maturation of prefrontal circuits during adolescence contributes to the development of cognitive processes such as decision-making. Recent theories suggest that these neural changes also play a role in the shift from generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) to depression that often occurs during this developmental period. Cognitive models of the development of GAD highlight the role of intolerance of uncertainty (IU), which can be characterized behaviorally by impairments in decision-making. The present study examines potential developmental differences in frontal regions associated with

Task Load Negatively Affects Critical Care Air Transport Team Performance in Simulation.

BACKGROUND: As the U.S. Armed Forces shift from counterterrorism operations to peer conflict, preparing Critical Care Air Transport (CCAT) teams for high-volume patient movement is imperative. Quantifying baseline CCAT task load and its impact on team performance is essential for guiding future research aimed at mitigating task saturation during the complex transport missions anticipated in peer conflict scenarios. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individual provider task load and team performance were evaluated during a high-fidelity simulation conducted as part of the CCAT-Advanced Course. The 55-min

From descriptive to generative: foundation-model approaches for spatial transcriptomics.

Spatial transcriptomics has advanced the study of biological systems by facilitating the mapping of gene expression within native tissue environments. Nevertheless, the intrinsic high dimensionality, pronounced data sparsity, and intricate nonlinear relationships between tissue morphology and the transcriptome pose challenges for conventional analytical frameworks in capturing long-range biological dependencies. This manuscript introduces a unified conceptual framework, termed "cells as words, tissues as sentences," for examining how the contextual learning and generative capabilities of large

Shared and unique neural correlates of reappraisal generation and implementation.

Cognitive reappraisal is an effective emotion regulation strategy that involves changing the meaning of an emotional event to alter one's emotional experience. Experimental studies have identified two dissociable subprocesses within reappraisal: the generation of candidate reappraisals (reappraisal generation) and the elaboration on a reappraisal to change emotion (reappraisal implementation). We examined the shared and unique neural correlates of these two reappraisal subprocesses. Participants (N = 45) completed the validated GenImp task while fMRI BOLD data was collected. In this task, part

Retinal image analysis for clinical translation: From deep learning to foundation models, generalization, and trustworthy deployment.

This review examines retinal image analysis from the perspective of clinical translation rather than benchmark-oriented model comparison. Instead of organizing prior work solely by disease category or model family, we synthesize recent advances through four connected dimensions: imaging modality, task taxonomy, methodological paradigm, and translational bottleneck. We compare major tasks, including classification, detection, segmentation, grading, progression prediction, and treatment-response assessment, across fundus photography, OCT/OCTA, and angiographic imaging. We further review the role

Monitoring Visual Fatigue with Eye Tracking in a Pharmaceutical Packing Area.

This study investigates visual fatigue in a real-world pharmaceutical packaging environment, where operators perform repetitive inspection and packing tasks under frequently suboptimal lighting conditions. A human-centered methodology was adopted, combining adapted self-report questionnaires, high-frequency eye-tracking data collected with Tobii Pro Glasses 3, and lux-level measurements. Key eye-movement metrics-including fixation duration, visit patterns, and pupil diameter-were analyzed within defined work zones (Areas of Interest). To reduce data complexity and uncover latent patterns of vi

Delineation of cross-domain associations between everyday executive function and adaptive behaviour in Down syndrome and Williams syndrome.

In genetic syndromes such as Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS), difficulties with executive functioning (EF) are a commonly reported feature and a key correlate of long-term success in everyday life. Despite a robust literature in children with these syndromes, it remains unclear how cross-syndrome characteristics of everyday EF relate to adaptive functioning and intelligence among adults with DS and WS, and if these relationships differ between these groups. This study aimed to characterise the profile of strengths and weaknesses in everyday EF using the Behaviour Rating Inventory

The Effect of the MFCC Frame Length in Automatic Voice Pathology Detection.

Automatic voice pathology detection is a research topic, which has gained increasing interest recently. Although methods based on deep learning are becoming popular, the classical pipeline systems based on a two-stage architecture consisting of a feature extraction stage and a classifier stage are still widely used. In these classical detection systems, frame-wise computation of mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) is the most popular feature extraction method. However, no systematic study has been conducted to investigate the effect of the MFCC frame length on automatic voice pathology

EEG source reconstruction reveals frontal-parietal dynamics of spatial conflict processing.

Cognitive control requires the suppression of distracting information in order to focus on task-relevant information. We applied EEG source reconstruction via time-frequency linear constrained minimum variance beamforming to help elucidate the neural mechanisms involved in spatial conflict processing. Human subjects performed a Simon task, in which conflict was induced by incongruence between spatial location and response hand. We found an early (∼200 ms post-stimulus) conflict modulation in stimulus-contralateral parietal gamma (30-50 Hz), followed by a later alpha-band (8-12 Hz) conflict mod
