Does alpha phase modulate visual target detection? Three experiments with tACS-phase-based stimulus presentation.

In recent years, the influence of alpha (7-13 Hz) phase on visual processing has received a lot of attention. Magneto-/encephalography (M/EEG) studies showed that alpha phase indexes visual excitability and task performance. Studies with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) aim to modulate oscillations and causally impact task performance. Here, we applied right occipital tACS (O2 location) to assess the functional role of alpha phase in a series of experiments. We presented visual stimuli at different pre-determined, experimentally controlled, phases of the entraining tACS sign

Faster processing of moving compared with flashed bars in awake macaque V1 provides a neural correlate of the flash lag illusion.

When the brain has determined the position of a moving object, because of anatomical and processing delays the object will have already moved to a new location. Given the statistical regularities present in natural motion, the brain may have acquired compensatory mechanisms to minimize the mismatch between the perceived and real positions of moving objects. A well-known visual illusion-the flash lag effect-points toward such a possibility. Although many psychophysical models have been suggested to explain this illusion, their predictions have not been tested at the neural level, particularly i

A Neural Mechanism for Sensing and Reproducing a Time Interval.

Timing plays a crucial role in sensorimotor function. However, the neural mechanisms that enable the brain to flexibly measure and reproduce time intervals are not known. We recorded neural activity in parietal cortex of monkeys in a time reproduction task. Monkeys were trained to measure and immediately afterward reproduce different sample intervals. While measuring an interval, neural responses had a nonlinear profile that increased with the duration of the sample interval. Activity was reset during the transition from measurement to production and was followed by a ramping activity whose sl

Vibrotactile adaptation enhances spatial localization.

A two-interval forced choice tracking procedure was used to evaluate the effects of a pre-exposure to vibrotactile stimulation ("adaptation") on the capacity of human subjects to spatially localize a subsequent tactile stimulus. A 25 Hz flutter adapting stimulus was presented at a randomly selected position within a 20 mm linear array oriented transversely on the hand dorsum. Two flutter stimuli delivered subsequently were applied to different sites along the linear array; one to the same locus that received the adapting stimulation (the "standard" stimulus), the other to a distant site (the "

Functional anatomy of top-down visuospatial processing in the human brain: evidence from rTMS.

The hypothesis was tested that visuospatial mental imagery relies on processing in the posterior parietal lobe. Using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in a cross-over, sham-controlled design, we compared involvement of right posterior parietal cortex with primary visual cortex. Subjects received rTMS over the parietal and occipital cortices during 20 min, after which they performed a behaviorally controlled visuospatial mental imagery task. Performance deteriorated significantly after rTMS over the parietal, but not occipital, cortex. These data support a causal link between

Causal capture: contextual effects on the perception of collision events.

In addition to perceiving the colors, shapes, and motions of objects, observers can perceive higher-level properties of visual events. One such property is causation, as when an observer sees one object cause another object to move by colliding with it. We report a striking new type of contextual effect on the perception of such collision events. Consider an object (A) that moves toward a stationary object (B) until they are adjacent, at which point A stops and B starts moving along the same path. Such "launches" are perceived in terms beyond these kinematics: As noted in Michotte's classic st

Deaf poor readers' pattern reversal visual evoked potentials suggest magnocellular system deficits: implications for diagnostic neuroimaging of dyslexia in deaf individuals.

Deafness and developmental dyslexia in the same individual may jointly limit the acquisition of reading skills for different underlying reasons. A diagnostic marker for dyslexia in deaf individuals must therefore detect the presence of a neurobiologically based dyslexia but be insensitive to the ordinary developmental influences of deafness on reading skill development. We propose that the functional status of the magnocellular visual system in deaf individuals is potentially such a marker. We present visual evoked potential (VEP) evidence that adult deaf poor readers as a group display magnoc

Time perspective of female prisoners related to success in a training program.

This study compared scores on future time perspective of 50 female prison inmates who were participating in a vocational training program within the Julia Tutwiler Prison. There was no control group. Zimbardo's measure of future time perspective, administered a year earlier, was associated with success or failure in the program. Associations of future time perspectives with education, age, and ethnicity were investigated. An analysis of covariance between the 21 graduates and 16 dropouts while controlling for education was significant. Despite the incomplete design, some implications are of in

Relationship between selected orientation rest frame, circular vection and space motion sickness.

Space motion sickness (SMS) and spatial orientation and motion perception disturbances occur in 70-80% of astronauts. People select "rest frames" to create the subjective sense of spatial orientation. In microgravity, the astronaut's rest frame may be based on visual scene polarity cues and on the internal head and body z axis (vertical body axis). The data reported here address the following question: Can an astronaut's orientation rest frame be related and described by other variables including circular vection response latencies and space motion sickness? The astronaut's microgravity spatia

[A test of a hypothesis of automatic phonological processing of Kanji words].

This paper aims to examine a hypothesis that phonological processing should occur in Japanese Kanji words as well as in Kana words, but automatic in Kanji words. In Experiment 1, subjects performed concurrent articulation or finger tapping during a semantic processing task of Kana words with 2 to 4 phonemes, for which phonological processing should be indispensable. Concurrent articulation was found to eliminate the phoneme number effect found in the control condition, but finger tapping was not. This result indicates the effectiveness of concurrent articulation in articulatory suppression. In

Is there a deficit of early vision in dyslexia?

A majority of dyslexic children have been found in many studies to show a deficiency of early vision, also called transient deficit. A series of four experiments was conducted to test whether or not the performance in different tasks is affected by a transient deficit. However, no clear evidence of a transient deficit was found, although the reliability of the measurements was high and the power of the statistical tests was adequate. All previous findings regarding the transient deficit can be explained by a reduced amplitude of the transient response. The same factor also accounts for a large

Eye fixation patterns among dyslexic and normal readers: effects of word length and word frequency.

Eye fixation patterns of 21 dyslexic and 21 younger, nondyslexic readers were compared when they read aloud 2 texts. The study examined whether word-frequency and word-length effects previously found for skilled adult readers would generalize equally to younger dyslexic and nondyslexic readers. Significantly longer gaze durations and reinspection times were found for low-frequency and long words than for high-frequency and short words. The effects also showed up in the number of fixations on the target words. The effects did not differ significantly for the 2 experimental groups. The results r

Inverted immersion as a novel gravitoinertial environment.

BACKGROUND: Inverted immersion (II) offers a unique opportunity to swing the orientation of the gravity vector 180 degrees from its usual configuration with vestibular end organs. During II, extrathoracic fluid dynamics are identical to those of upright immersion (UI). II exposes individuals to a novel gravitoinertial environment and, therefore, should produce motion sickness (MS). HYPOTHESIS: II is more provocative of signs and symptoms of MS than UI. METHODS: Nine subjects were exposed once to II and UI. Conventional SCUBA gear was worn. In II, the subject wore a wetsuit which provided 5-7

Core body temperature in narcoleptic and normal subjects living in temporal isolation.

The aim was to detect abnormalities in the circadian temperature rhythms of narcoleptic patients, as evidence of abnormal circadian pacemaker function. Six narcoleptic patients and nine normal controls lived in a time-isolation laboratory for 18-22 days. Rectal temperature was measured every minute and modeled by mean waveforms and cosine functions, which have complementary advantages. In this study, the two types of models gave similar results: The levels, periods, amplitudes, and phases of the circadian temperature rhythms of patients and controls did not significantly differ--evidence again

Faces interfere with name classification in a prosopagnosic patient.

Since sustaining a severe closed head injury P.H. has been completely unable to recognise familiar faces, but remains able to identify written names. Despite his inability to recognise faces overtly, P.H. nevertheless shows a normal pattern of interference from simultaneously presented distractor faces in a politician vs nonpolitician name classification task. His reaction times for semantic (politician versus nonpolitician) classification of printed names are slowed by the presence of a face drawn from the incorrect semantic category. This interference is found even though P.H. performs at ch

Bilateral amblyopia after a short period of reverse occlusion in kittens.

The majority of neurones in the visual cortex of both adult cats and kittens can be excited by visual stimulation of either eye. Nevertheless, if one eye is deprived of patterned vision early in life, most cortical cells can only be activated by visual stimuli presented to the nondeprived eye and behaviourally the deprived eye is apparently useless. Although the consequences of monocular deprivation can be severe, they can in many circumstances be rapidly reversed with the early implementation of reverse occlusion which forces the use of the initially deprived eye. However, by itself reverse o

Familiarity decisions for faces presented to the left and right cerebral hemispheres.

Right-handed subjects were asked to decide whether or not faces presented briefly in the RVF or in the LVF were familiar (familiar faces were those of famous people). This task avoids the need for extensive semantic processing or temporary storage involved in conventional naming or identification tasks, and thus eliminates the contribution of such factors to any observed asymmetry. The resulting finding of faster reaction times to LVF faces, with no overall visual hemifield difference in error rates, is taken to indicate a right-hemisphere superiority either in the processes used to construct

The efficiency of the central and peripheral retina in driving human optokinetic nystagmus.

Previous experiments to decide whether the gain of optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is increased or decreased by occlusion of the central retina involved the use of stationary edges on the occluder and unmatched contrasts. With these factors controlled, it was confirmed that OKN gain is severely reduced by occlusion of the central retina but only at stimulus velocities above about 30 degrees/sec. The gain of horizontal OKN was found not to increase with increasing width of the display if the lateral edges are blurred. The high gain of centrally driven OKN may be related to the ability of higher mam

[Pain in children in historical perspective].

Pain in children, especially in infancy, is frequently underestimated. Surprisingly, in ancient times, writers were more aware of the existence of pain in infancy and the need for its relief than in 20th century. They rated pain perception as being higher in infancy than in childhood. The study by McGraw (1941), although badly designed, convinced the vast majority of clinicians that infants do not feel pain and do not require analgesia. This theory, reinforced by the fear of using opioids in young children, dominated medical thinking for more than 30 years. Later studies on pain perception in
