Effect of a new support design on the marginal and internal gap of additively manufactured interim crowns using direct light deposition technology.

PURPOSE: To investigate the design and location of supporting structures on the marginal and internal gap of interim restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular right first molar resin tooth was prepared for a full coverage crown and scanned using a laboratory scanner (3Shape D900). The scanned data were converted into standard tessellation language (STL) format and an indirect prosthesis was designed using computer-aided design (CAD) software (exocad DentalCAD). The STL file was used to fabricate a total of 60 crowns with a 3D printer (EnvisionTEC Vida HD). The crowns were printed usin

Combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment in a patient with aggressive periodontitis: a 9-year follow-up report.

A combined periodontal and orthodontic treatment demands a detailed evaluation in both specialties, particularly when the periodontium is reduced. This is especially true for adult patients, but young patients can also suffer from advanced periodontitis. This article describes combined periodontal and orthodontic therapy in a young patient with severe localized and aggressive periodontitis, tooth crown abnormalities, and missing maxillary second premolars. Periodontal treatment was carried out. Once attachment gain and bone stability were confirmed, orthodontic therapy commenced. It lasted 32 …

Conservative management of lower second premolar impaction.

Lower second premolars account for approximately 24 per cent of impactions, excluding third molars, even though most reports in the literature relating to impacted teeth address the maxillary canine, with relatively few reports on the lower second premolar. Conservative management involves surgical exposure of the crown, however, subsequent premolar eruption is unpredictable. A case is described in which removal of a deciduous second molar was followed by eruption of an unfavourably inclined premolar located deep within the alveolus. Sufficient time must be allowed for eruption and in the pres

Semilunar Papilla Preservation Flap Technique in Combination with Chorion Membrane for Pocket Reduction and Gingival Recession Coverage.

An unavoidable consequence of periodontal flap procedure is gingival recession (GR). Achieving both pocket depth reduction and GR coverage remains a challenge to periodontists. The present case report provides a new innovative technique that will enable all clinicians to achieve pocket depth reduction as well as recession coverage in esthetic zone. The clinical parameters that were assessed at baseline, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months are probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), height of GR (HGR), and gingival biotype. The patient reported with a faulty post and core with crown in

Obliteration of Recurrent Large Dentigerous Cyst Using Bilateral Buccal Fat Pad Sling Flaps.

Dentigerous cyst (DC), also known as follicular cyst, is an odontogenic cyst with fluid accumulation between the crown and enamel organ of an unerupted tooth, pushing the crown away from the alveolar bone. The patients with DC in the maxillary sinus should be evaluated thoroughly by extraoral and intraoral examinations, proper diagnostic imaging procedures, and pathologic examination to avoid misdiagnosis of maxillary sinusitis. The standard treatment for DC in the maxillary sinus is often removed by Caldwell-Luc approach. Furthermore, marsupialization or functional endoscopic sinus surgery ma

The palatal displaced maxillary canine: early diagnosis and interceptive correction - a guideline for the general dental practitioner.

The maxillary permanent canine has a long path of eruption and can become displaced, leading to displacement on the palatal side and failure of eruption. We highlight current diagnostic strategies to help monitor eruption of this tooth and discuss potential interceptive measures to promote eruption in the presence of displacement. We further investigate the current evidence base with meta-analysis and provide a guide for the general dental practitioner based upon these data. In particular, extraction of the primary canine to normalise the eruptive position of a palatal displaced maxillary cani

Management of regional odontodysplasia: a 10-year-follow-up case report and literature review.

The aim of this article was to review the literature and present a case of regional odontodysplasia (ROD) with special emphasis on clinical and radiographic features. A 6-year-old girl was referred to our department with the chief complaint of missing her permanent maxillary left central incisor, lateral incisor, and both of her canines. The gingiva of the involved region was enlarged, fibrous, and tense. Radiographic examination showed abnormal tooth formation and shortened roots. After 3 years of follow up with temporary prosthetic rehabilitation, periodontal surgery was performed. Following

Occlusion regulates tooth-root elongation during root development in rat molars.

Occlusion is commenced by contact of a tooth with an opposing tooth and is the mechanical force working against the periodontal ligament (PDL). However, the influences of occlusion during root development remain uncertain. By extracting the unerupted counterpart molars of rats, we established a non-occlusal model that directly examined the effects of the absence of occlusion in developing molars using micro-computed tomography (μ-CT) and histological procedures. The μ-CT data for experimental molars confirmed no attrition and hypogenesis of the alveolar bone. Root lengths in experimental group

Assessment of Root Resorption and Root Shape by Periapical and Panoramic Radiographs: A Comparative Study.

INTRODUCTION: One of the common findings encountered by the clinician at the end of orthodontic treatment is the apical root resorption. Root resorption occurs to various degrees. A severe form of root resorption is characterized by shortening of root for more than 4 mm or more than one-third of the total tooth length. A low incidence rate of resorption is observed based on radiographic findings for the diagnosis of root resorption, panoramic radiography, and periapical radiography. Hence, we evaluated the accuracy of panoramic radiographic films for assessing the root resorption in comparison

Panoramic radiographic examination of 704 Danish children aged 9--10 years.

Panoramic radiographs of 704 apparently health children aged 9--10 years were examined regarding anomalies and pathologic conditions in the maxillofacial area. Almost all findings were mesial to the molars. 1.7% of the children had a supernumerary tooth, 7.7% had hypodontia. Malposition of 631 permanent teeth was recorded. 42 dentigerous cysts were detected. Malformed crown or root was seen on 60 permanent teeth. Caries was found on 224 primary and 32 permanent teeth. 257 primary teeth showed atypical resorption, and 53 had a periapical inflammatory radiolucency. 20 retained roots of primary t

Labial inverse dilaceration of bilateral maxillary central incisors: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Dilaceration is a rare dental developmental anomaly characterized by an abrupt deviation along the longitudinal axis of the root in which an angulation forms between the root and the crown. Here, we report on dilacerated bilateral maxillary central incisors in mixed dentition. CASE SUMMARY: A 10-year-old girl presented with a chief complaint of unerupted central incisors. An oral examination and radiography provided the basis for a diagnosis of dilaceration of the maxillary central incisors. After surgical exposure of the impacted teeth, a button with an attached chain was applied

Investigating a potential association between agenesis of the third molars and variations in dental crown dimensions.

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between third molar agenesis and mesiodistal crown dimensions in individuals from Germany. The sample consisted of 314 (156 males and 158 females) orthodontic patients, divided into two groups: one group with individuals presenting at least one congenitally missing third molar and a control group with individuals having a full complement of 32 teeth. The mesiodistal crown width of each fully erupted permanent tooth was measured at its maximum dimension. The t-test was used to compare mesiodistal width between groups, with additional anal

Stress distribution in the closure of anterior maxillary diastemas using different restorative approaches: a finite element analysis.

OBJECTIVE: This finite element analysis study aims to evaluate the effects of restoring 1 mm and 2 mm diastemas in maxillary anterior incisors with different CAD-CAM materials on stress distribution and to compare full crown and laminate veneer restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maxillary anterior tooth models simulating laminate veneer and full crown restorations were created. The experimental groups were categorized into four based on diastema width (1 mm and 2 mm) and CAD-CAM materials. Loads of 50 N, 150 N, and 250 N were applied vertically at 0° and obliquely at 30° and 60° angles to t

Sensory Nerves Regulate Odontoblast Differentiation via the SPP1/ITGA4 Axis During Tooth Root Development.

AIM: The stem/progenitor cell is crucial for organogenesis. Sensory nerves, as key components of the stem cell niche, secrete various factors to modulate stem/progenitor cell fate decision. Here, we utilised tooth root development as a model to explore the role of sensory nerves in this regulatory process and to elucidate the underlying mechanism. METHODOLOGY: Spatiotemporal dynamics of nerve innervation were characterised during tooth root development. We treated mouse dental papilla cells (mDPCs) with trigeminal ganglion-conditioned medium (TG-CM) and employed a subrenal co-culture of TG-to

Endodontic management of dens evaginatus of maxillary central incisors: a rare case report.

Dens evaginatus is a disturbance in tooth development that produces a tubercle of hard tissue on the surface of the tooth. While prophylactic pulp capping is recommended for vital teeth, teeth with necrotic pulps require endodontic therapy or extraction. This rare case of a 24-yr-old Indian male with affected maxillary central incisors demonstrates the clinical consequences of dens evaginatus.

Distant consequences of traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth--a case report.

The ever increasing number of injuries to deciduous teeth in children constitutes a serious problem in paedodontics. Among many factors that facilitate tooth injuries are malocclusions, and most specifically protrusions of upper incisors of Class II/1 according to Angle. This is a case report of a 6-year-old girl with irregularities of upper permanent incisors due to traumatic injuries to deciduous teeth. In view of the ongoing child development processes, medical check-ups following injuries to deciduous teeth should be undertaken once every two or three months. Since such injuries have an im

Papilla and gingival outcomes in implant-rehabilitated patients with oligodontia: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Oligodontia is a rare condition characterized by the absence of at least 6 teeth. Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation offers a reliable solution for affected patients. However, the unique periodontal traits of oligodontia raise questions about the best prosthetic approach for papilla reconstruction. This retrospective study aims to assess papilla and gingival esthetics in implant-supported rehabilitation of patients with oligodontia. The study compared 3 prosthetic rehabilitation options: adjacent implants, bridges, and cantilevers. METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with olig

Multifactorial analysis of factors influencing premolar mobility in stage III/IV grade C periodontitis patients ≤ 35 years of age: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested a potential link between the crown-to-root ratio (CRR) and root morphology in patients with mild chronic periodontitis, which may be associated with tooth mobility. However, these findings have not been thoroughly investigated. Our previous study found that 76% of patients with aggressive periodontitis, particularly those with premolar involvement, exhibited abnormal root morphology, severe alveolar bone loss, and increased tooth mobility, leading to poor clinical outcomes. This study aims to investigate the specific correlations among alveolar bone
