PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Inherited peripheral neuropathies can be divided into those diseases in which peripheral neuropathy is the sole or main feature of the disease (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease) and those in which peripheral neuropathy is just one feature of a more complex syndrome. In recent years there has been a substantial expansion in the number of genes associated with complex neuropathy syndromes.
RECENT FINDINGS: This review will focus on emerging themes in this group of diseases, namely the increasing number of diseases due to repeat expansions; the emergence of both recessive and domin

Dental caries, one of the most prevalent oral diseases among adults and children, is caused by oral microorganisms and diet and involves a complex, multi-step process of biofilm formation and tooth decay. The existing clinical treatment modalities are not satisfactory due to the disadvantages of incomplete eradication of pathogens, poor material compatibility and susceptibility to secondary caries. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in treating dental caries, with various strategies emerging to combat these bacterial films and promote tooth remineralization. However, comprehens

Oral health problems, particularly tooth defects, can significantly affect people's quality of life and overall well-being. The development of titanium (Ti) dental implants has largely replaced natural tooth roots to prevent periodontal and gastrointestinal diseases. However, challenges such as postoperative bacterial infections and poor osseointegration continue to hinder progress in dental implant technology. To tackle these issues, we used hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride chitosan (HACC) and gallic acid-modified gelatin (GAG) to create extracellular matrix (ECM) coatings on titanium

Bisphosphonates are a synthetic class of pyrophosphate analogues that are powerful inhibitors of bone resorption which are commonly used as a medication for the prevention and therapy of osteoporosis and osteopenia, also used to treat tumor diseases. As it affects bone metabolism, it is said to have an influence on orthodontic treatment and tooth movement. Also, this review gives an insight into the reported effects of Bisphosphonate medication in literature highlighting the status quo of scientific research regarding effects of Bisphosphonates on orthodontic tooth movement. A systematic liter

This clinical report describes the bonding procedure and clinical course of a natural tooth pontic in a 65-year-old male patient. A mandibular lateral incisor was extracted due to severe marginal periodontitis. The root of the tooth was amputated and a pontic structure was formed by filling acrylic resin into the coronal pulp chamber space. The enamel surface of the pontic and the adjacent abutment teeth were etched with phosphoric acid gel. The pontic was bonded with a modified tri-n-butylborane initiated adhesive resin (Super-Bond Quick). The connecters fractured 11 years after bonding when

AIM: Dental infections are implicated in several systemic diseases due to bacteremia and pro-inflammatory effects, but their possible role in liver disease is unclear.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical course of liver disease in relation to dental health among 116 patients with liver cirrhosis who underwent dental examination before liver transplantation.
RESULTS: The need for multiple tooth extractions, a surrogate marker of dental infections, was associated with reduced time from diagnosis of liver disease to the need for liver transplantation (P = 0.02). The association wa

Dental caries is progressive destruction of enamel, dentine and cementum, initiated by microbial activity at the tooth surface. It is one of the major problems in dentistry. On the basis of clinical features, it can be compared with Krimidanta which is one among the eight diseases of tooth. In the management of Krimidanta, Krimighna, Vataghna and Ushna Veerya dravyas are to be used which can relieve the toothache and discoloration. In this study, the trial drugs used were Jatipatradi Gutika for Pratisarana and Yavanadi Churna for oral administration. In this study, the patients of Krimidanta (

The prevalence of caries and caries risk factors was studied among 120 consecutively hospitalized elderly persons. Coronal caries was recorded using the WHO criteria, and active and inactive root caries in accordance with Fejerskov et al. The CPITN was used to evaluate the periodontal state and plaque accumulation in accordance with Löe & Silness. Of the 1212 teeth examined 5% had active coronal caries (2% inactive), 14% active root caries (2% inactive), and 10% fillings with recurrent caries. No relationship was found between caries prevalence, degree of dependence, number of medicaments, age

Ferrets have increased in popularity as pets, and a growing number are seen in companion animal practice. Domestic ferrets are commonly used as animal models for research of human oral conditions. The present study evaluated the prevalence of oral pathology in rescued ferrets which - to the authors' knowledge - has not yet been described in the scientific literature. Conscious oral examination was performed on 63 ferrets, of which 49 underwent general anesthesia for further examination. The most common clinical findings included malocclusion of mandibular second incisor teeth (95.2%); extrusio

Equine dentistry is a very important but until recently rather neglected area of equine practice, with many horses suffering from undiagnosed, painful dental disorders. A thorough clinical examination using a full mouth speculum is a pre-requisite to performing any equine dental procedure. Common incisor disorders include: prolonged retention of deciduous incisors, supernumerary incisors and overjet--the latter usually accompanied by cheek teeth (CT) overgrowths. Overjet can be surgically corrected, but perhaps should not be in breeding animals. In younger horses, traumatically fractured incis

The peculiar dentoorofacial characteristics and 12 years of interdisciplinary management of a patient who was severely intoxicated with the man-made chemical polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are described in this case report. Cephalometric measurements showed that the SNA and SNB angles were reduced but that the developments in height and skeletal maturity were in normal ranges. Gingival hyperpigmentation that was caused by high blood PCB concentration was extremely slow to fade. A cystic mass, diffused trabeculae, and irregular calcification, which were shown on the radiograph and which were

OBJECTIVE: Aim: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition associated with oral microbiome dysbiosis and the dominance of Gram-negative bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. It is characterized by progressive destruction of the supporting tissues of the tooth, leading to loss of connective tissue attachment, resorption of the alveolar bone, and, consequently to tooth loosening and loss. If left untreated, it leads to recurrent bacteremia and persistent systemic inflammation. The aim of this study is to discuss the mechanisms linking periodontitis to cardiovascular and neurodegenera

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The term "pathological abrasion" (increased abrasion) can be described as a loss of tooth hard tissue on the occlusal, oral, vestibular surfaces of teeth or in the occlusal area. Treatment of increased abrasion of teeth is a difficult task for the practical work of a dentist. The choice of the optimal treatment plan provides the greatest likelihood of long-term success and minimal probability of complication appearance. The aim of our work was to study the functional activity of the masticatory muscles in the pathogenesis of the development of increased abrasion of too

Cytoplasmic dynein is the most important molecular motor driving the movement of a wide range of cargoes towards the minus ends of microtubules. As a molecular motor protein, dynein performs a variety of basic cellular functions including organelle transport and centrosome assembly. In the nervous system, dynein has been demonstrated to be responsible for axonal retrograde transport. Many studies have revealed direct or indirect evidence of dynein in neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Hunti

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease comprises a vast array of defects in myelin integrity that causes progressive peripheral sensorimotor neuropathy. It is the most prevalent inherited peripheral neuropathy, and it can affect the management of coexisting medical conditions. We report the case of a 25-year-old woman who had undergone successful Fontan surgery during childhood, but her Fontan circulation failed as a result of diaphragmatic paresis caused by Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A. This diagnosis precluded cardiac transplantation.
