Effect of a single brushing with two Zn-containing toothpastes on VSC in morning breath: a 12 h, randomized, double-blind, cross-over clinical study.

This randomized, double-blind, 12 h clinical study tested the effect of a single brushing with two Zn-containing toothpastes on volatile sulfur compound (VSC) levels in morning breath. The following toothpastes were each tested by all 28 participants: A-Zn toothpaste, B--experimental toothpaste (Zn citrate + PVM/MA copolymer) and C--control toothpaste without Zn. The evening prior to test days participants brushed their teeth for 2 min with 1 g toothpaste. 12 h later and prior to eating or performing oral hygiene, morning breath levels of VSC (H(2)S, CH(3)SH) were analysed by gas chromatograph

[Comparative study by pH-tests of the efficacy of antimicrobial agents in oral cavity].

The opportunity of use stimulated by sucrose solutions and urea test pH changes of the mixed saliva were investigated with the purpose of an estimation of efficiency of antiseptic and hygienic means action. Research is carried out on 37 students who have been specially picked up in 3 groups: "A" -- with low activity of caries without periodontitis, "B" -- caries-susceptible and "C" -- with gingivitis and periodontitis. It appeared possible with the help of pH-measuring of saliva to compare antiseptic action in an oral cavity of 4 popular antiseptics: the combined gel with chlorhexidine and met

[Patients with heart valve prostheses: dental care, dental procedures and prevention].

Patients with birth or rheumatic heart defects, or wearing prosthetic cardiac valves, are at high risk of developing bacterial endocarditis following dental treatment. Two hundred patients with cardiac valves were surveyed with respect to both their oral hygiene habits and their last visit to the dentist. More than half of the respondents (112) were fully edentulous, and most of them had not seen a dentist for many years. Of the 88 respondents who had natural teeth, 23 had not been to a dentist since surgery. For the purpose of this study, focus was placed primarily on the answers given by the

Buccal attachment loss in Swedish adolescents.

A case referent study was performed to identify factors connected with loss of buccal attachment in adolescents. The study group was identified among 18-year-olds who had participated 2 years earlier in a study of periodontal conditions in adolescents. The criterion for inclusion in the case group was buccal attachment loss (greater than or equal to 1 mm) in one or more sites. Information on 28 variables, identified earlier as being related to recessions, was collected in a clinical examination, interview and observation. The referent group consisted of 66 subjects and the case group of 71 sub

Halitosis Reduction and Oral Hygiene Improvement: A Study of Chlorhexidine, Oil Pulling, and Saline in Orthodontic Patients with Braces.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic treatment with fixed braces promotes plaque accumulation, leading to increased microbial count and deterioration of periodontal status. Volatile sulfur-producing organisms also increase, contributing to halitosis. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of oil pulling, regular brushing, normal saline mouthrinse, and chlorhexidine (CHX) in treating halitosis and its impact on pathogenic microorganisms in orthodontic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients aged 14-20 years were randomly divided into four groups: CHX, oil pulling, normal saline, and re
