Precise simulation of the freezing transition of supercritical Lennard-Jones.

The fluid-solid transition of the Lennard-Jones model is analyzed along a supercritical isotherm. The analysis is implemented via a simulation method which is based on a modification of the constrained cell model of Hoover and Ree. In the context of hard-sphere freezing, Hoover and Ree simulated the solid phase using a constrained cell model in which each particle is confined within its own Wigner-Seitz cell. Hoover and Ree also proposed a modified cell model by considering the effect of an external field of variable strength. High-field values favor configurations with a single particle per W

Main Group Redox Catalysis: New Frontiers with Germanium and Tin.

ConspectusThe quest for sustainable alternatives to precious transition metals has driven a paradigm shift toward main group redox catalysis. Among p-block elements, low-valent group 14 compounds (such as tetrylenes and tetryliumylidenes) are particularly attractive because their ambiphilic nature, featuring a lone pair of electrons and vacant p-orbital, closely mimics the electronic configuration of transition metals. Despite their well-established ability to activate inert bonds in stoichiometric reactions, translating this reactivity into genuine catalytic redox cycles has remained a formid

Imaging of nanoscale polar textures in quantum paraelectric SrTiO3.

When cooling towards a ferroelectric phase transition, collective atomic motions (phonons) slow down (soften) until a static atomic displacement pattern forms, giving rise to spontaneous polarization throughout the material1. However, in quantum paraelectrics such as strontium titanate (SrTiO3), long-range ferroelectric order does not develop at low temperatures due to persistent quantum fluctuations of ionic positions2,3. In SrTiO3, quantum paraelectricity emerges below Tq ≈ 40 K refs. 4-6 and is preceded by anomalous phonon dynamics: a transverse acoustic phonon mode partially softens at a f

Soft Lattice and Dual-Emitter Engineering in Cr3+-Doped Fluorides: Achieving Highly Sensitive and High-Fidelity Near-Infrared Optical Thermometry.

Cr3+-activated near-infrared phosphors are a promising optical thermometry platform in biomedicine and industrial applications, yet confront low lifetime sensing sensitivity (Sr < 2% K-1). Here, Li3GaF6:Cr3+ is proposed as a high-sensitive, high-fidelity thermometry via a soft structure and dual-emitter modulation. Two Ga sites yield a dual-emitter mechanism: isolated Cr3+ ions and spatially confined Cr3+-Cr3+ pair (<5 Å interatomic distance)─a novel observation in fluorides. Density functional theory, Rietveld refinement, and luminescence behavior confirm that Cr3+ evenly occupies both Ga sit

Photo-thermal and temperature-regulated sodium alginate-g-mPEG/carbon nanotube hybrid fibers with improved tensile strength.

Despite the remarkable potential of phase change fibers for energy storage, their practical deployment has been hindered by two crucial challenges: inadequate external thermal stimulation to induce phase transition and leakage of the phase-change material. In this study, we successfully incorporated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a solution of sodium alginate grafted polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether (SA-g-mPEG) and utilized wet spinning processing to fabricate CNTs/SA-g-mPEG hybrid fibers with enhanced photo-thermal conversion and robust solid-solid phase change capabilities. Upon exposure t

Evaluation of enhanced thermostability and operational stability of carbonic anhydrase from Micrococcus species.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA) was purified from Micrococcus lylae and Micrococcus luteus with 49.90 and 53.8 % yield, respectively, isolated from calcium carbonate kilns. CA from M. lylae retained 80 % stability in the pH and temperature range of 6.0-8.0 and 35-45 °C, respectively. However, CA from M. luteus was stable in the pH and temperature range of 7.5-10.0 and 35-55 °C, respectively. Cross-linked enzyme aggregates (CLEAs) raised the transition temperature of M. lylae and M. luteus CA up to 67.5 and 74.0 °C, while the operational stability (T(1/20) of CA at 55 °C was calculated to be 7.7 and 12…

Analysis of the thermal stability of type II collagen in various solvents used for reversed-phase high performance chromatography.

The thermal stability of type II collagen in various solvents is shown to depend on the ability of the solvent to form hydrogen bonds. Mixtures of water with 1-propanol, 2-propanol, 1,2-propanediol, tetrahydrofuran and acetonitrile effect the stability of the triple helix differently. The temperature of the triple helix coil transition of type II collagen in 50(v/v)% solvent mixture in 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid ranges from 34 degrees C for 1,2-propanediol to 22.5 degrees C for acetonitrile, compared to 38 degrees C in 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid and 41.5 degrees C at neutral pH. There is no corr

Stabilizing Frustrated Phase Transitions in Selective Oxidation Reactions.

Frustrated phase transitions represent the ideal working state of a heterogeneous catalyst. These states exist within a narrow parameter window, making them difficult to stabilize. Here, it is shown for the selective oxidation of 2-propanol to acetone over Co3O4 spinels that the addition of water extends the stability regime of the relevant frustrated phase transition. This conclusion is based on results obtained from multi-modal experiments, including operando scanning electron microscopy (OSEM), near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), transmission electron microscop

Structural Changes in Rat Hepatocyte Nucleolus under Nucleolar Stress Caused by Hypothermia.

Structural changes in rat hepatocyte nucleoli were studied during deep hypothermia simulated by immersion in water at 5°C for 40 min (ambient air temperature 7°C). In comparison with the control, phenomena of nucleolar stress occurred in rats during hypothermia: the number of fibrillar centers (FC) per nucleus (by 1.7 times) and per nucleolus (by 1.6 times), nucleolonemal nucleoli per nucleus (by 2.8 times), and the relative content of nucleolonemal nucleoli per nucleus (by 2.6 times) significantly decreased (p=0.0000001); the number of FC per nucleolonemal nucleolus also decreased by 1.4 time

A novel high-resolution melting analysis-based method for Salmonella genotyping.

To establish a simple and rapid high-resolution melting curve (HRM) method, 5 different strains of Salmonella were identified by adding DNA denaturants at different concentrations into the HRM system to change the characteristics of DNA melting and to obtain different Tm (dissolving temperature) values of DNA from different target bacteria. When the concentration of n-butanol was 7% (v/v), the Tm value of the melting curve of the 5 strains changed from 89 °C to 80.5 °C, 81.5 °C, 79.5 °C, 81.0 °C and 82.5 °C, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the proposed method were both over 90

Colossal Barocaloric Effect in Liquid Crystals via Cascade Order-Disorder Transitions.

The order-disorder transition plays a pivotal role in the exploration of barocaloric materials, exemplified by the recent discovery of colossal barocaloric plastic crystals. Among the various candidates undergoing order-disorder transitions, liquid crystals stand out as a particular category with cascade solid-smectic-nematic-liquid phase transitions, which endow them with great potential as high-performance barocaloric materials. Herein, we report the barocaloric properties and the underlying entropy change mechanism of a series of length-tunable liquid crystals (4'-alkyl-4-cyanobiphenyl, nCB

Optimization of 3D printing parameters for PLGA/HA scaffolds using the Taguchi method.

PLGA/HA is a promising material for 3D printed bioresorbable bone scaffolds, but the effects of fused filament fabrication parameters on monotonic and cyclic mechanical performance of resulting structures are unknown. Furthermore, the evolution of mechanical properties and dimensional stability under prolonged exposure to temperature and cell culture immersion conditions is also poorly investigated. This study first applied a Taguchi L9 orthogonal array to evaluate the effects of layer height, nozzle temperature, print speed, and cooling fan speed on the flexural properties of 90:10 wt% PLGA/H

Steering Large Magnetic Exchange Coupling in Nanographenes near the Closed-Shell to Open-Shell Transition.

The design of open-shell carbon-based nanomaterials is at the vanguard of materials science, steered by their beneficial magnetic properties like weaker spin-orbit coupling than that of transition metal atoms and larger spin delocalization, which are of potential relevance for future spintronics and quantum technologies. A key parameter in magnetic materials is the magnetic exchange coupling (MEC) between unpaired spins, which should be large enough to allow device operation at practical temperatures. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally explore three distinct families of nanograp

Risk factors for neonatal hypothermia at Arba Minch General Hospital, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: The first few minutes after birth are the most dangerous for the survival of an infant. Babies in neonatal intensive care units are either under heated or overheated, and hypothermic infants remain hypothermic or develop a fever. As a result, special attention must be paid to monitoring and maintaining the time of recovery from hypothermia states. Despite numerous studies, only a few have examined the transition from neonatal hypothermia and associated risk factors in depth. METHOD: A retrospective observational study was conducted to track axillary temperatures taken at the time

Determining femtosecond laser fluence for surface engineering of transparent conductive thin films by single shot irradiation.

In recent years, there has been increasing interest in optoelectronic applications of transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin-film-based materials and devices fabricated using patterning techniques. Meanwhile, femtosecond laser processing is a convenient method that further improves the performance of TCO-based functional devices and expands their application prospects. In this study, we proposed a simple and effective strategy to determine the fluences required for laser processing TCOs. We investigated the modification of an indium tin oxide (ITO) film induced by a femtosecond laser (45/150

Ab initio kinetics and thermochemistry of hydrogen atom abstraction from solketal by hydroxyl radicals.

As oxygenated biofuels gain prominence in sustainable energy strategies, understanding their reaction kinetics with hydroxyl (˙OH) radicals is essential for predicting combustion behavior. In this work, all six hydrogen-atom abstraction (HAA) pathways in the solketal (2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane-4-methanol) + ˙OH reaction were characterized using high-level ab initio calculations and variational transition state theory (VTST). Molecular geometries and vibrational frequencies were obtained at the M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level, with single-point energies refined at the QCISD(T)/CBS level. Low-freque

Signaling Pathways Regulating Dimorphism in Medically Relevant Fungal Species.

Pathogenic fungi that exhibit the ability to alternate between hyphal and yeast morphology in response to environmental stimuli are considered dimorphic. Under saprobic conditions, some fungi exist as filamentous hyphae, producing conidia. When conidia are inhaled by mammals or traumatically inoculated, body temperature (37 °C) triggers dimorphism into yeast cells. This shift promotes fungal dissemination and immune evasion. Some fungal pathogens undergo dimorphism in the contrary way, forming pseudohyphae and hyphae within the host. While temperature is a major driver of dimorphism, other fac

Laser absorption spectroscopy diagnostics of nitrogen-containing radicals in low-pressure hydrocarbon flames doped with nitrogen oxides.

Absolute concentration profiles of NH2 and HNO have been measured in low-pressure methane/air flat flames doped with small amounts of NO and N2O. Addition of a small amount of nitrogen oxides does not alter significantly the flame speeds, temperature profiles and other parameters of the relatively well-understood methane/air flames. Intracavity laser absorption spectroscopy (ICLAS) and cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) are high-sensitivity techniques used to measure absolute concentrations of minor species in flames. In this work ICLAS is used to monitor NH2 and HNO, whereas CRDS is used fo
