The introduction of BCR-ABL-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) for treatment of hematologic malignancies has made a significant impact on patient outcome. Contingent upon their targeted and off-target activity, therapy-associated infectious complications may occur. We present a case of cytomegalovirus pneumonitis and a case of adenovirus hemorrhagic cystitis in two patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia on BCR-ABL TKI treatment and review the literature to summarize the infectious complications based on clinical data. As life-threatening infections may occur,

INTRODUCTION: To determine the infectious diseases (ID) that led to hospital admission of the foreign population>14 years.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study of foreign patients admitted to hospital (2000-2012).
RESULTS: A total of 3,087 foreigners were admitted with infectious diseases. Of these, 73.6% were from low income countries, and 26.4% from high income countries. Most of them (86.9%) were admitted with common ID, 11.8% with transmissible ID, and 1.6% with tropical ID. Tropical ID and transmissible ID were higher in patients from low income countries (14.7%) than from high i

Important preventive measures carried out in the herds of domestic animals have found improving the health status of farms, particularly for contagious diseases subject to mandatory declaration and accompanying drastic but necessary eradication measures in infected flocks. However it is more difficult to apply these same biosecurity measures on wildlife that may have been contaminated or not by domestic animals. The growing number of emerging infectious diseases of wildlife may reflect increased vigilance, but most often the result of a change in the ecology of the host, the causative agent or

Actinomycosis of esophagus is uncommon. Herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, candidiasis, tuberculosis, and other fungal infections are the commonly reported infections in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. We report a case of esophageal actinomycosis in an end-stage renal disease patient. A 28-year-old lady, known case of systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis B virus infection with end-stage renal disease on regular maintenance hemodialysis since 5 years presented with history of epigastric pain and odynophagia for 1 week. Her upper gastrointestinal endoscopic examinatio

Alcohol abuse suppresses multiple arms of the immune response, leading to an increased risk of infections. The course and resolution of both bacterial and viral infections is severely impaired in alcohol-abusing patients, resulting in greater patient morbidity and mortality. Multiple mechanisms have been identified underlying the immunosuppressive effects of alcohol. These mechanisms involve structural host defense mechanisms in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract as well as all of the principal components of the innate and adaptive immune systems, which are compromised both through alc

We sought to determine factors associated with opportunistic infections (OI) in infliximab-treated patients. A retrospective study cohort (1999-2004) was examined. Nine OI were diagnosed in 94 infliximab-treated patients: tuberculosis (four), visceral leishmaniasis (one), pyogenic muscular abscess (one Salmonella spp. and one Streptococcus pneumoniae), and two viral infections (hepatitis B virus [HBV] and zoster ophthalmicus). The risk for OI was significantly higher in the first year of treatment (odds ratio [OR] 8; 95% confidence interval [CI] 2-50). Previous treatment with more than two imm

The African economy will only be able to develop significantly if several public health issues are first addressed. The infantile mortality rate is an excellent index of a population's overall health status. Infections being responsible for more than 60% of deaths, vaccination is crucial. The Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) (Programme Elargi de Vaccination) launched in 1974 has avoided countless deaths. Until the early 1990s, vaccine coverage of the program's target diseases (tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, measles, yellow fever and hepatitis B) increased ra

Summary Immune reconstitution is a well recognized phenomenon associated with the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) for HIV infection. After the administration of HAART there is a rise in CD4 T-cell count in the circulation brought about by cessation of HIV replication. This allows the body to respond to antigens that it previously ignored. This manifests itself most commonly as an overt illness to previously ignored pre-existing infections such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, cytomegalovirus, cryptococca

Cadavers remain a principal teaching tool for anatomists and medical educators teaching gross anatomy. Infectious pathogens in cadavers that present particular risks include Mycobacterium tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C, the AIDS virus HIV, and prions that cause transmissible spongiform encephalopathies such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS). It is often claimed that fixatives are effective in inactivation of these agents. Unfortunately cadavers, even though they are fixed, may still pose infection hazards to those who handle them. Emerging infectious diseases are caused by old, new, and mutant microorganisms. Emergence of these pathogens can be attributed to changes in the characteristics and risk factors of patients, the widespread use of antibiotics, changes in the environment, the role of xenotransplantation, and international travel. In the United States, the incidences of C. difficile, cyclosporiasis, enterohemorrhagic E. coli gastroenteritis, Hantavirus, hepatitis C virus infection, and Lyme disease have increased significantly over the past two decades. The expanded program on immunization, jointly launched by WHO and UNICEF in 1974 aimed in the beginning at immunizing 80% of the children of the world against measles, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria and tuberculosis. After reaching the objectives in 1990, countries have been urged towards eradication of poliomyelitis, elimination of neonatal tetanus, and measles control. Immunization against hepatitis B and yellow fever were also proposed according to local epidemiology. Tremendous results have been already delivered: the American continent has eliminated poliomyelitis since Aug

The purpose of this study was to examine and to compare the type of information requested on representative health history questionnaires commonly used by the dental profession. Samples of medical history questionnaires were obtained from American and Canadian dental schools, commercial vendors, and the American Dental Association. Results indicated that more than 140 questions have been included on questionnaires and more than 92% of these appeared in some type of yes-or-no format. The number of questions per form ranged from 32 to 88, with an average of 58 items. Although there was wide vari

The main side-effects of BCG vaccination by scarification in 511 patients with malignant melanoma since 1974 have been fatigue and exhaustion, swelling of the lymph-nodes, influenza-like symptoms, nausea and dizziness. Only in 8 patients were the side-effects more severe, requiring the cessation of treatment in some of them. One patient developed granulomatous hepatitis, another experienced a reactivation of pulmonary tuberculosis. Allergic reactions occurred in two patients. A further patient developed recurrent erysipelas in the draining areas of the scarification. In two patients we observe

Recently arrived immigrants from Latin American countries represent a growing population in Switzerland. This article reviews the evidences on the most frequent chronic infections affecting this population group in Switzerland and presents screening recommendations adapted to primary care practice. Efforts should particularly focus on screening for Trypanosoma cruzi and Strongyloides stercoralis, especially in groups at higher risk of complication or transmission.

Tuberculous liver abscess is rare worldwide. We report a 45-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. Ultrasound and computed tomography of the abdomen showed multiple cystic lesions in the liver. Ultrasound guided needle aspiration revealed yellowish brownish aspirate, which was flooded with acid-fast bacilli. The abscess was drained under ultrasound guidance. Subsequent abdominal ultrasound a few days later showed resolution of the abscess cavity. He was concomitantly started on systemic antituberculous therapy. A tuberculous liver abscess has to be thought of in
