Serological types of Pasteurella multocida isolated from turkeys and chickens in Canada.

Outbreaks of fowl cholera continue to plague the Canadian poultry industry despite widespread immunization against the causative agent, Pasteurella multocida. Fowl cholera bacterins currently employed by domestic poultry growers contain three serological types, namely, serotypes 1, 3, and 4. In this study a total of 84 strains of P. multocida were isolated in Canada from outbreaks of fowl cholera in turkeys and chickens. Serotyping was accomplished using the gel diffusion precipitin test. Based on the gel diffusion precipitation patterns, 27 serotypes containing one to six antigenic determinan…

Training auxiliary nurse-midwives to provide IUD services in Turkey and the Philippines.

A program for training health personnel for the provision of IUD services has been implemented and evaluated with 14 auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs) in Turkey and 13 ANMs in the Philippines. Standardized training materials, including a training manual, checklists for contraindications or complications of IUD use, and patient-management instructions, have been developed. The study suggests that similar training programs should use a reference manual as a focus for didactic training and that the acquisition of skills is best accomplished in small groups of two to three trainees per instructor. T…

The ultrastructure of the epithelium of the ducts of the Harderian and lacrimal glands of the turkey, fowl and duck.

The ultrastructure of the epithelium in the Harderian and lacrimal gland ducts of the turkey, fowl and duck has been investigated. The findings establish that the ducts are fundamentally similar in morphology, although species differences occur. The duct epithelia are composed of cuboidal, columnar or pseudostratisfied columnar cells with many secretory vesicles as well as goblet cells. PAS-positive fibrillary rods and crystalline inclusions occupied the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum of the epithelial cells of turkeys. The crystals, which were thought to evolve from the rods, ha…

Photosensitizing effects of Cymopterus watsonii and Cymopterus longipes in chickens and turkey poults.

Two-week-old straight-run white broiler chicks and 2-week-old straight-run white turkey poults were fed seed or whole plants Cymopterus watsonii or seed of Cymopterus longipes at 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6% of body weight, and then placed in sunlight for 5 hours each day for 7 days. All plant material produced moderate to severe photosensitivity in chicks. Toxic signs included photophobia; red discoloration of beak, comb, and feet; loss of feathers in the periorbital area; dried serous fluid on comb and edge of beak; keratoconjunctivitis; and multiple lesions on feet and legs. Turkey poults showed a sy…

Lameness and leg weakness in rapidly growing turkeys associated with hip lesions.

A form of epidemic lameness affecting rapidly growing broadbreasted turkeys of different breeds was investigated in 16 flocks. The condition commenced when birds were between eight and 14 weeks old and was consistenly associated with the development of lesions in the hip. Affected birds first showed leg weakness and ataxia and later chronic postural changes involving the hip. The post mortem lesions were those of inflammation, oedema, ulceration, fibrosis and complensatory hypertrophy of localised areas associated with the hip articulation. The cause was not established but the anatomical feat…

The effects of elevated levels of sodium chloride on ascites and related problems in turkeys.

The response of young poults to diets containing 0.7, 1.2, 1.7 and 2.7 per cent sodium chloride was studied. Water intake, feed intake and wieght gain were not significantly influenced by treatment. Only the highest level caused a significant increase in mortality. Ascites was not a consistent finding even on high levels of salt. A straight line best described the response but confidence limits were large and this was also true for heart, kidney and lung lesions. Lesions showing myocardial distension with pericardial adhesions, severe congestion of the lungs and enlarged pale kidneys seemed mo

Natural resolution of air sac lesions caused by mycoplasma meleagridis in turkeys.

Lesions caused by Mycoplasma meleagridis were followed in one hatch of turkeys from one day to 20(1/2) weeks of age. Air sac lesion incidence increased from 20% at one day to 44% at six weeks of age with a slow decline to 10% at 10 weeks of age. Lesions were detectable on careful examination at 10-20% level to 20 weeks of age on laboratory examination, but at 20(1/2) weeks only 0.07% lesions were found in 1000 turkeys from the same hatch. Air sac lesion severity, based on an arbitrary 0.5,1,2,3,+scale, increased in intensity and spread of air sac involvement from a mean of 1.5 at day old to 2.…

The Relationship between Severe Earthquakes and Ventricular Arrhythmia in Turkey: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Earthquakes are associated with an increase in cardiovascular events through various physiological and environmental mechanisms. However, data on their effects on ventricular arrhythmias (VA) are limited. AIM: The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of earthquakes on the incidence of VA and device response by examining implantable cardiac device records. METHODS: The device records of patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or a cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator (CRT-D) device, implanted for any reason, at least 1 month prior to

Retroviral Infections Affect Survival and Clutch Size of Female Wild Turkeys.

Pathogens can regulate or decimate free-ranging wildlife populations. Wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo), which are widespread across the United States, southern Canada, and northern and central Mexico, are a prized upland gamebird that has experienced dramatic population growth and range expansion as the result of reintroduction campaigns. While increased abundance may promote disease transmission, little is known about the effects of pathogen infections on demographic metrics in wild turkeys. Lymphoproliferative disease virus (LPDV) and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are oncogenic retrovi…

Wheat levels have minor effects on the progression of coccidiosis in turkey poults.

Coccidiosis, a major poultry disease caused by Eimeria species, compromises intestinal health and challenges nutrient utilization. Wheat is widely used in poultry diets worldwide and can serve as an effective alternative energy source. While several studies have highlighted the beneficial effects of wheat in poultry, evidence of its role under the Eimeria challenge remains limited. Therefore, this study was performed to better understand the effect of two dietary wheat levels on Eimeria-challenged turkey poults. A total of 240 one-day-old male turkey poults were divided into four treatments fo…

Evaluating the Effect of Acetylsalicylic Acid in Turkey Poults Experimentally Infected with Coccidia.

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), originally trademarked as Aspirin, is a common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in human and veterinary medicine to mitigate pain and pyrexia caused by inflammatory processes. There is limited information on the effectiveness of ASA in turkey production. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ASA on turkey poults with induced coccidial enteritis. Two experimental trials were conducted. In both trials, the turkeys were divided into four groups: no coccidia + no ASA; no coccidia + ASA (NA); coccidia + no ASA (CN); and coccidia + A…

Effect of dietary wheat on the progression of Histomonas meleagridis infection in turkey poults.

Blackhead disease (Histomoniasis), caused by Histomonas meleagridis (HM), remains a major constraint to turkey production, and dietary factors that may influence disease progression are poorly defined. This study evaluated whether moderate wheat inclusion alters HM outcomes in turkey poults. A total of 432 one-day-old male turkey poults (Nicholas) were allocated to a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement with HM challenge (HM+ or HM-) and dietary wheat inclusion (0, 15, or 30%), yielding 6 treatments with 6 replicates (12 birds/replicate) for a 22-d experimental period. Diets were formulated to be isoca…

Does Salmonella co-infection worsen Histomonas meleagridis infection in turkeys?

Histomoniasis, caused by Histomonas meleagridis (HM), leads to severe cecal and hepatic damage in turkeys. Although Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) commonly colonizes in the cecum, its influence on the progression of Histomoniasis remains unclear. This study was conducted to evaluate whether ST co-infection alters clinical outcomes, intestinal integrity, or performance in HM-challenged turkey poults. A total of 336 one-day-old male poults were allocated into four treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial design with 6 replicates/treatment. Negative control (NC), HM challenge (T1), ST challenge (T2), and HM+…
