We examined the effects of presentation rate on speech perception in noise and its relation to reading in 117 typically developing (TD) children and 10 children with reading difficulties (RD) in Japan. Responses in a speech perception task were measured for speed, accuracy, and stability in two conditions that varied stimulus presentation rate: high rate and same rate conditions. TD children exhibited significantly more stable responses in the high rate condition than they did in the same rate condition. Multiple regression analyses indicated that response stability in the high rate condition

Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD) is a metabolic disease with associated enzyme deficiency and an inability to break down amino acids. Neurotoxic levels can occur resulting in neurological sequelae. Information regarding cognitive functions has suggested greater verbal than visuospatial abilities. Specific neuropsychological functions have not been studied. The objective of this study is to examine the neuropsychological profile in a case of MSUD. We present a case study of a 7-year-old female who has a history of late diagnosis (7 days of age) and poor metabolic control. Consistent with existi

OBJECTIVE: The present study evaluates the long-term effects of a preschool training in phonological awareness and letter- sound correspondence.
METHOD: The children from the experimental and the control group of the original study (Blaser et al., 2007) were retested by means of reading and writing tests at the end of the 3rd and 4th grades.
RESULTS: Results reveal no significant difference between the trained group and the control group with regard to their average reading and writing performance. Effects of the training are seen in the reduction of the number of children with spelling prob

The dual-route model offers a popular way to classify developmental dyslexia into phonological and surface subtypes. The current study examined whether this dual-route model could provide a framework for understanding the varieties of Chinese developmental dyslexia. Three groups of Chinese children (dyslexics, chronological-age controls, and reading-level controls) were tested on Chinese exception character reading, pseudocharacter reading (analogous to English nonword reading), novel word learning, and some phonological and orthographic skills. It was found that Chinese exception character re

A key area of weakness in individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is working memory, thus the goal of this study was to determine whether teaching children (aged 4-11) with FASD verbal rehearsal would increase their memory. Rehearsal training has been effective in other populations with working memory difficulties, so we hypothesized that children with FASD would also benefit from rehearsal training. Children were divided into an Experimental group, who received rehearsal training and a Control group, who did not receive training. All children were tested on digit span tasks ov

Participants were German dyslexic readers (13-year-olds) who-compared to English dyslexic readers-suffer mainly from slow laborious reading and less from reading errors. The eye movements of eleven dyslexic boys and age-matched controls were recorded during reading of text passages and pseudoword lists. For both text and pseudoword reading, the dyslexic readers exhibited more and much longer fixations, but relatively few regressions. Increased length of words and pseudowords led to a greater increase in number of fixations for dyslexic than normal readers. Comparisons across studies suggest th

A new perspective is described which views developmental dyslexia as the outcome of learning to write the alphabet in the nondominant (right) hemisphere. The letter-level and whole-word subtypes of dyslexia are seen as differing responses adopted to cope with this predicament. Striking similarities between dyslexics and callosotomy patients in the allocation of covert attention to lateralized stimuli provide direction for integrating a diversity of dyslexic research within this framework. This synthesis, together with information from pure alexia, brain activation, and reading research, lends

This study investigated the phonological processing skills of university students with dyslexia. Fifty-nine students participated in this study: 28 with reading disabilities based on recent psychological assessments and a history of early and persistent reading problems; and 31 controls. The two groups did not differ on estimates of verbal and nonverbal abilities. The dyslexia group performed significantly less well on standardized measures of reading and spelling. However, the dyslexia group scores on these measures fell within the average range. The main dependent variables were subsumed und

The relationships among working memory, inhibitory control, and reading skills were studied in 966 individuals, 6-49 years old. In addition to a standardized measure of word recognition, they received a working memory (listening span) task in the standard, blocked format (three sets containing two-, three-, or four-item trials) or in a mixed format (three sets each containing two-, three-, and four-item trials) to determine whether scores derived from the standard format are influenced by proactive interference. Intrusion errors were investigated in order to determine whether deficits in worki

The present study was carried out on a sample of 125 right-handed boys who are described as follows: 50 boys with dyslexia, 50 controls of a similar age, and 25 controls according to reading level. Using an objective procedure based on regression, we selected three subgroups from among the poor readers: children with difficulties in the lexical pathway (surface dyslexics), children with difficulties in the sublexical pathway (phonological dyslexics), and children with problems in both pathways (mixed dyslexics). When the performances of these children on a dichotic listening task with CV sylla

In two experiments, the capacity of Parkinson patients and normal controls to generate letters randomly was investigated using a dual task. The task was based on Baddeley's work (Baddeley, A. D., Quarterly Journal of experimental Psychology 18, 119-129, 1966) where participants vocalize letters of the alphabet in random order. The task was performed under two conditions where letters were (a) vocalized at a specified rate (0.5, 1, 2 and 4 sec); and (B) letters were vocalized at the same rates but with a secondary task of sorting cards into one, two, four and eight categories. The aim was to te

Aspects of cognitive processing in patients with cerebellar degeneration (CD) were studied in order to examine the validity of recent findings that CD patients demonstrate deficits in visuospatial cognition and verbal-associative learning. Two groups of patients with CD were compared to stratified matched control groups on tests examining selective visual attention, visual spatial attention, mental rotation of geometric designs, and memory for the temporal order of words they were previously exposed to. CD patients performed similarly to their matched controls across all tasks. These results i

This article has two purposes: to outline aspects of nonlinear phonological theory that refer to syllable, word, and phrase structure, and to provide some examples of phonological intervention techniques for development of these structures. A variety of restricted child productions of syllable, word, and phrase structures are described in nonlinear terms. Intervention targets are defined for each of the restrictions, and both general and specific interventions are suggested, the majority of which have been clinically evaluated. Clinicians are encouraged to try various alternatives to discover

We investigated the clinical and cognitive aspects of patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus and possible Binswanger's disease. We studied 19 patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus and 19 patients with Binswanger's disease, comparing them with the same number of matched controls. The patients with normal-pressure hydrocephalus had a later age and more frequent gait disturbance at the onset, shorter duration of the illness, rare signs of vascular disturbances, and more frequent severe mental deterioration. Ventricular enlargement may play a role in determining the more rapid and worse

The analysis of the spelling performance of a brain-damaged dysgraphic subject is reported. The subject's spelling performance was affected by various graphotactic factors, such as the distinction between consonant and vowel and graphosyllabic structure. For example, while the subject produced many consonant and vowel deletion errors when these were part of consonant and vowel clusters, respectively (e.g., sfondo----sondo; giunta----gunta), deletions were virtually never produced for single consonants flanked by two vowels (e.g., onesto----oesto) or for single vowels flanked by two consonants

In two experiments, a recognition test for an earlier presented list was given twice in immediate succession (Test 1 and Test 2). On the hypothesis that anterograde amnesia for episodic memory involves a deficit in contextual memory, amnesic subjects should confuse familiarity with distractor items gained during Test 1 with familiarity gained during original list presentation. As a result, they should think that they recognize more items on Test 2. This will lower recognition efficiency in Test 2 by increasing false alarms rather than by reducing hits. For subjects with an amnesia induced by l

A total of 219 patients who had suffered from subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) were given a set of memory tests. The tests comprised immediate free recall (indexing long-term memory, LTM, and short-term memory, STM), final free recall (LTM) and final cued recall (LTM) of words as well as a digit-span test (an index of working memory, WM). STM was highly sensitive to brain damage caused by SAH whereas WM was not. Localisation of the ruptured aneurysm, angiographic vasospasm or mass effect did not have any selective influence on the SAH group's STM or WM. The final free recall test was the most se

Clinical disorders of memory are believed to occur from the dysfunction of either the mesial temporal lobe, the mesial thalamus, or the basal forebrain. Fibre tract damage at the level of the fornix has only inconsistently produced amnesia. A patient is reported who suffered a cerebrovascular accident involving the posterior limb of the left internal capsule that resulted in a persistent and severe disorder of verbal memory. The inferior extent of the lesion effectively disconnected the mesial thalamus from the amygdala and the frontal cortex by disrupting the ventral amygdalofugal and thalami

Studies of 60 dyslexic boys age 8-14, carefully selected for exclusion of intellectual, sensory, psychiatric and neurological impairment and educational deprivation, were conducted to determine the efficacy of Piracetam, over a 12-week period, in improving reading and other related skills. There were no changes at the end of 12 weeks to distinguish the groups in accuracy or comprehension of prose-reading. Short-term memory gains, however, were recorded for the treated group on two different tests, digit span, and a test (Neimark) of immediate and delayed recall. The mean digit span scaled scor

Four normal and four deviant children aged four-to-six years were taught to judge the quality of their academic work in a preschool classroom, and to prompt or cue their teachers to comment about the quality of that work. When these skills did not generalize spontaneously to other teachers in concurrent natural situations, generalized responding was taught by the experimenter, in multiple-baseline design across subjects. This generalization programming enabled the children to contact a sometimes dormant, but readily available natural community of teacher praise and reinforcement, i.e., to recr
