Bat echolocation is a dynamic behavior that allows for real-time adaptations in the timing and spectro-temporal design of sonar signals in response to a particular task and environment. To enable detailed, quantitative analyses of adaptive sonar behavior, echolocation call design was investigated in big brown bats, trained to rest on a stationary platform and track a tethered mealworm that approached from a starting distance of about 170 cm in the presence of a stationary sonar distracter. The distracter was presented at different angular offsets and distances from the bat. The results of this

New neurons formed in the adult brain are incorporated into existing circuits. However, the number of new neurons recruited into a given brain region varies widely depending on the experience of the animal. An emerging general principle is that recruitment and early neuronal survival may be correlated with activity or use of the brain region. Here we show that use-dependent neuronal survival also occurs in the higher order auditory processing region of the songbird caudomedial nidopallium (NCM). We suggest that retention of young neurons may in part be influenced by use of the system without a

Three three-month-old Siberian husky x Alaskan malamute crossbreds had suffered episodic inspiratory dyspnoea and stridor for four to eight weeks and their endurance had decreased. In two of them bilateral, and in the other unilateral, laryngeal paralysis was diagnosed by laryngoscopy. In the nucleus ambiguus of the dogs there was a depletion of motor neurons, neuronal degeneration and mild gliosis, but there were no lesions in the root and peripheral segments of the recurrent laryngeal nerves.

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

The stereotyped delivery of sequences of vocalizations by singing zebra finches is thought to be mediated by a "central motor program." We hypothesized that electrically stimulating, and thus perturbing, the neural components of this motor program during singing should alter the subsequent singing pattern. In contrast, perturbing the activity of other neurons in the song motor pathway that do not participate directly in generating the song temporal pattern should not affect the singing pattern. We found that unilaterally stimulating the forebrain area RA of singing birds with chronically impla

1. Morphine and nalorphine were shown to have a peripheral analgesic effect on conscious guinea pigs, producing a decrease in the vocalization response to noxious electrical stimulation. Naloxone antagonized the effect of morphine and nalorphine. 2. Locally administered clonidine had a peripheral analgesic effect on conscious guinea pigs, producing a decrease in the vocalization response to noxious electrical stimulation. 3. The peripheral analgesia of clonidine was antagonized by yohimbine and naloxone. The analgesic effect of clonidine was 250-300 times more potent than that of lidocaine. 4.

Interaction of tropane derivatives (motropin, atropine, cocaine) with opiates (morphine) and opioids (an enkephalin amide analog) was studied according to varying tests: pain sensitivity, impulse summation in the central nervous system, respiration. It appeared that motropin is a morphine antagonist and enkephalin amide analog from the standpoint of effect on analgetic action and impulse summation, but is not their antagonist as regards the effect on respiration. Atropine is a weak morphine antagonist in terms of the effect on analgesia, impulse summation and respiration as well. Cocaine is a

BACKGROUND: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience significant vocal communication deficits. Findings in the Pink1-/- rat model of early-onset PD suggest that ultrasonic vocal communication is impaired early, progressively worsens prior to nigrostriatal dopamine depletion, and is associated with loss of locus coeruleus neurons, brainstem α-synuclein, and larynx pathology. Individuals with PD also demonstrate ventilatory deficits and altered sensory processing, which may contribute to vocal deficits.
OBJECTIVE: The central hypothesis is that ventilatory and sensory deficits are p

Understanding the contribution of neuropeptide-containing neurons to variation in social behavior remains critically important. Galanin has gained increased attention because of the demonstration that galanin neurons in the preoptic area (POA) promote mating and parental care in mammals. How widespread these mechanisms are among vertebrates essentially remains unexplored, especially among teleost fishes, which comprise nearly one-half of living vertebrate species. Teleosts with alternative reproductive tactics exhibit stereotyped patterns of social behavior that diverge widely between individu

While previous research has sought to validate the chick separation stress paradigm as an anxiolytic screening assay, it is unknown whether the paradigm better models a nonspecific anxiety-like state or something similar to panic disorder or generalized anxiety disorder. To characterize the anxiety model pharmacologically, cockerels were administered drug probes that were either: (1) only effective for treating panic disorder (phenelzine 3.125-25.0 mg/kg), (2) effective for treating both panic disorder and generalized anxiety disorder (alprazolam 0.065-0.5 mg/kg; clonidine 0.1-0.25 mg/kg; imip

The long-term transcriptional actions of steroids that shape neuronal morphology and the probability of behavioral expression are well established. More recently, attention has been focused on the role of rapid (minute-by-minute) steroid actions on neuronal mechanisms of reproductive behavior. In this review, we first consider the rapid actions of steroids on mating and copulatory behaviors in tetrapod vertebrates. Evidence for rapid effects of steroids is presented for chemoinvestigatory behavior (genital sniffing of females by male mice), lordosis (arched-back mating posture in female rats),

It is still a matter of debate whether neurons in the higher central nervous system of anurans become progressively more sharply tuned to sounds that have a behavioral importance or that such coding is performed by (small) groups of neurons. The approach we have taken to investigate this matter comprises simultaneous single-unit recording using two microelectrodes in the auditory midbrain of the grassfrog. The present study deals with 96 pairs of units responding to an ensemble of natural and synthetic mating calls in which carrier frequency and pulse-repetition rate were varied. This ensemble

Pentazocine (5-15 mg/kg) fails to change the period of latency in the rat tail-flick reaction at thermic stimulation but suppresses to the same extent as morphine (5 mg/kg) the emotional-pain response and enhances the reactions of arterial blood pressure during mechanical stimulation. Both prazosin and naloxone (1 mg/kg) abolished the activating effect of pentazocine on the arterial blood pressure changes produced by nociceptive stimulation.

The pathophysiology of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and its impact on the vocal fold is not well understood, but may involve acid damage to vocal fold barrier functions. Two different components encompass vocal fold barrier function: the mucus barrier and tight junctions. Mucus retained on epithelial microprojections protects the inside of the vocal fold by neutralizing acidic damage. Tight junctions control permeability between cells. Here we developed an in vitro experimental system to evaluate acidic injury and repair of vocal fold barrier functions. We first established an in vitro model

This study aimed to describe a rare case of gnathostomiasis in the vocal cord. A 54-year-old Chinese woman living in Korea visited with a chief complaint of voice change at the outpatient department of otorhinolaryngology in Hallym Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University on August 2, 2021. She had eaten raw conger a few weeks before the voice change developed, but her medical history and physical examinations demonstrated neither gastrointestinal symptoms nor other health problems. A round and red cystic lesion, recognized in the anterior part of the right vocal cord, was removed using forcep

BACKGROUND: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is a known complication of thyroid/parathyroid surgery. Intraoperative nerve monitoring (IONM) has been used to gain more information regarding the functional status of the RLN intraoperatively; however, the electromyography (EMG) parameters of RLN after nontransection neuropraxic compressive injury remain unknown.
METHODS: We developed a canine model to identify IONM EMG correlates of postoperative vocal cord paralysis (VCP) using a standardized method to simulate surgical RLN compression sufficient to cause VCP.
RESULTS: Compression nerve

We evaluated the efficacy and outcome of intracordal auricular cartilage injection in patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. Our interest developed from findings of a canine model study that reported that histologic characteristics of cartilage were preserved 2 and 3 years after intracordal autologous cartilage injection. Between May 2002 and July 2010, 29 patients with breathy dysphonia caused by unilateral vocal fold paralysis underwent intracordal auricular cartilage injection. Each subject underwent preoperative and postoperative perceptual assessments, acoustical voice analysis, a

Vocal folds are anatomically and biomechanically unique, thus complicating the design and implementation of tissue engineering strategies for repair and regeneration. Integration of an enhanced understanding of tissue biomechanics, wound healing dynamics and innovative gel-based therapeutics has generated enthusiasm for the notion that an efficacious treatment for vocal fold scarring could be clinically attainable within several years. Fibroblast phenotype and gene expression are mediated by the three-dimensional mechanical and chemical microenvironment at an injury site. Thus, therapeutic app
