Retinoids have shown anti-inflammatory activity in some animal models and human diseases, although the mechanism by which retinoids elicit this activity is unknown. In this study, retinoids significantly attenuated, in a dose-dependent fashion, murine ear oedema induced by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) or oxazolone. Interspecies heterokaryon assay is one of the most effective methods to investigate the nucleocytoplasmic trafficking properties of a protein. In our lab, the interspecies heterokaryon assay has been applied to identify a few herpesviral proteins with nucleocytoplasmic shuttling property. Pirin is a nonheme iron-binding protein with a variety of proposed functions, including serving as a coactivator of p65 NFκB and quercetinase activity.
