Covariation bias in flight phobics.

Covariation estimates (CEs) between fear-relevant (FR) stimuli (slides of airplane crash sites) or fear-irrelevant (FI) stimuli (slides of airplanes in flight or mushrooms) and an aversive outcome (electrical shock) were examined in 15 flight phobics (high-fear participants) and 15 non-flight-phobic individuals (low-fear participants) by means of an illusory correlation experiment. In spite of a random relationship between all slide categories and outcome (illusory correlation), flight phobics exhibited a covariation bias and showed higher CEs for the contingency between FR slides and shocks t

Risk of altitude exposure in sickle cell disease.

The risk of altitude-induced hypoxemia causing painful crisis was determined in a group of 45 predominantly adult patients with sickle cell disease. The patients were divided into two groups: those with hemoglobin (Hb) SS and those with Hb SC or Hb S beta-thalassemia. Altitude exposures were divided into airplane travel and mountain visits, and the latter subdivided into stays at 4,400 or 6,320 ft. The average risk of crisis was higher for both groups while in the mountains (37.9 percent and 56.6 percent, respectively) than it was during airplane travel (10.8 percent and 13.5 percent, respecti

Two-year mortality in 760 patients transported by helicopter direct from the road accident scene.

Of 760 direct admissions to a specialized trauma center, 173 (22.7%) victims of motor vehicle accidents died. Excluding patients dead on arrival, the mortality rate was 14.5%. Autopsy reports were reviewed and showed that the major cause of death was head injury (49.7%). Uncontrollable hemorrhage from massive trauma was the next most common problem and usually proved fatal in the first 24 hours after admission. The incidence of sepsis and renal failure increased with prolongation of CCRU stay. Following admission, respiratory failure was not a common cause of death (3%). Because of direct heli

Non-linear stiffness and damping properties of human intervertebral discs in compression and flexion at high-rates of loading.

High-loading rate events such as automotive collisions, aircraft ejection, and underbody blast can result in severe spinal injuries. Computational models aim to predict injuries to enable future safety improvements but require a detailed understanding of the high-rate mechanical response of the spine's structures, particularly the intervertebral discs. This study aimed to characterise the compressive and flexion stiffness properties of human intervertebral discs across all levels of the spine, using an inverse modelling approach. Vertebral body-disc-vertebral body segments from each level of f…

ReVAR: a data-driven algorithm for generating aero-optic phase screens.

The propagation of light through a turbulent flow field around an aircraft results in optical distortions commonly known as aero-optic effects. The development of methods to mitigate these effects requires large amounts of realistic aero-optic data. However, methods for obtaining these data, including experiment, computational fluid dynamics, and simple phase screen generation algorithms (e.g., boiling flow), each have significant drawbacks such as high cost, high computation, limited quantity, and/or inaccurate statistics. More recently, data-driven algorithms have been proposed that are comp…

Transportation noise and the cardiometabolic risk.

Transportation noise is a widespread and often underestimated environmental pollutant, posing a substantial health risk particularly in urba … s such as noise-reducing asphalt, low-noise tyres, and changes in urban infrastructure, whereas for aircraft noise nighttime flight bans and optimized flight paths are important tools for reducing noise exposure. Addressing co-exposure to noise and air pollution is essential for a comprehensive approach to mitigating the environmental burden on cardiovascu …

Hypoxic hypoxia at moderate altitudes: review of the state of the science.

Unpressurized aircraft routinely operate at altitudes where hypoxia may be of concern. A systematic literature review was conducted regarding hypoxic impairment, including mental functions, sensory deficits, and other pertinent research findings that may affect aviation-related duties at moderate altitude (8000 to 15,000 ft/2438 to 4572 m). The results of this review suggest that cognitive and psychomotor deficits may include learning, reaction time, decision-making, and certain types of memory. However, results are difficult to quantify and reliably reproduce. Inconsistency of results may be …

Ambient temperature and neck EMG with +Gz loading on a trampoline.

INTRODUCTION: Fighter pilots who are frequently exposed to severe cold ambient temperatures experience neck pain disabilities and occupational disorders more often than those who are not so exposed. We hypothesized that a cold-induced increase in muscle strain might lead to in-flight neck injuries. The aims of this study were to measure the level of cooling before takeoff and to determine muscle strain under Gz loading (0 to +4 Gz) at different temperatures. METHODS: Test subjects' (n = 14) skin temperature (T(skin)) over the trapezoids was measured before the walk to the aircraft and again i…

Acute hemodynamic responses to weightlessness during parabolic flight.

Pilots and astronauts experience fluid shifts in variable gravity. Acute effects of fluid shifts on the cardiovascular system were monitored on NASA's KC-135 aircraft during parabolic flight. The variability of R-R intervals in the electrocardiogram was measured as an indication of vagal cardiac neural activity. R-R intervals were measured during the gravity transition from 2-G to 0-G produced by parabolic flight to assess the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in regulating the acute effects of fluid shifts. In seven subjects, a BoMed noninvasive continuous cardiac output monitor (NC…

Human limits in next-generation fighter aviation: psychophysiological stressors, readiness, health, performance, and countermeasures.

The transition to fifth- and sixth-generation fighter aircraft is increasing the psychophysiological demands placed on military aircrew. Next-generation fast-jet operations combine sustained and repetitive high-G loading; intermittent hypoxia, hyperoxia, and hypobaria associated with unexplained physiological episodes; prolonged single-seat missions; advanced helmet-mounted displays; acoustic and thermal stress; and high cognitive load from sensor fusion, automation, and manned-unmanned teaming. These exposures challenge autonomic regulation, cerebral and respiratory physiology, neurocognitive…
