Alcoholic myopathy is characterized by biochemical and morphological lesions within muscle, ranging from impairment of muscle strength and loss of lean tissue to cellular disturbances and altered gene expression. The chronic form of the disease is five times more common than cirrhosis and is characterized by selective atrophy of type 11 (anaerobic) fibres: type I (aerobic) fibres are relatively protected. Although the causative agent is known (i.e. ethanol), the intervening steps between alcohol ingestion and the development of symptoms and lesions are poorly understood. However, acetaldehyde

As with other addictions, human alcoholism is characterised as a chronically relapsing condition. Consequently, the "holy grail" from a therapeutic viewpoint is the development of clinically effective, safe drugs that promote high compliance rates and prevent relapse. Here we discuss the potential of therapeutics targeting neuropeptide systems implicated in aberrant alcohol-seeking behaviour. Clearly, much of the data so far available comes from pre-clinical studies; however, one of the first effective therapeutic strategies for alcoholism (still in use today) was the use of non-selective opio

It is well known that drug abuse is common in early adolescence with almost the same epidemiological characteristics in economically developed and undeveloped countries. Alcohol abuse is a problem worldwide, which destroys ones social, economical and family life. Our country is in a transition period and consists of postwar society. Therefore, all risk factors for alcohol and other substances abuse are present such as social, economical and medical risk factors. Parents and peers seem to have strong impact on adolescent's behavior. Youngsters like to experiment with a risky life style without

Current understanding suggests that moderate quantities of alcohol use may have beneficial effects on bone mineral density, irrespective of age and sex, and would not be a risk factor of osteoporotic fracture. Heavy alcohol intake or alcoholism, however, frequently disrupts calcium and bone homeostasis, which leads to reduce bone mineral density and increase the incidence of fragility fracture. Since the habits of alcohol intake is closely associated with other diet and lifestyle factors, the exact mechanism underlying alcohol-related bone loss still remained to be clarified. The effects of al

Medically diagnosed alcoholics can be differentiated reliably from non-alcoholics using clinically laboratory tests. In the present study, patients with liver diseases either due to alcohol or without alcohol compared with a group of normal healthy persons. Heavy drinkers showed significantly lower body weight and percent body fat, and low BMI compared with other groups. The percentage of hemoglobin and total number of RBC were found to be significantly decreased, whereas mean corpuscular volume (MCV) significantly increased in alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Hyperbilirubinemia, hyperuricemia a

Findings obtained from numerous prospective cohort and case-control studies on alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer risk have been inconsistent, with many confounding variables present in various investigations. However, heavy alcohol consumption has been known to be a major cause of chronic pancreatitis and a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus, both of which are linked to pancreatic cancer. It has been established that an extensive normal interaction exists between the exocrine and endocrine pancreas, as well as in inflammatory processes and carcinogenesis. Alcohol and its metaboli

Acamprosate has a different mechanism of action than other drugs used for maintenance of abstinence from alcohol and is generally well tolerated. Diarrhea is the most common adverse effect. Its efficacy in controlled trials has been modest at best, and was poor when patients lacked social support for remaining abstinent. Acomprosate can be used in combination with naltrexone or disulfiram.

Alcohol abuse is associated with many health problems, especially skin changes. As a small, water- and lipid-soluble molecule, alcohol reaches all tissues of the body and affects most vital functions. Cutaneous diseases are now emerging as useful markers of alcoholism detectable at an early and possibly reversible stage of the disease, thus being of substantial importance to dermatologists and general practitioners. The most common skin manifestations of alcoholism presented in this review article are urticarial reactions, porphyria cutanea tarda, flushing, cutaneous stigmata of cirrhosis, pso

The spectrum of alcohol withdrawal symptoms ranges from such minor symptoms as insomnia and tremulousness to severe complications such as withdrawal seizures and delirium tremens. Although the history and physical examination usually are sufficient to diagnose alcohol withdrawal syndrome, other conditions may present with similar symptoms. Most patients undergoing alcohol withdrawal can be treated safely and effectively as outpatients. Pharmacologic treatment involves the use of medications that are cross-tolerant with alcohol. Benzodiazepines, the agents of choice, may be administered on a fi

About 5,000 people die each year from chronic liver disease in England and Wales alone. In many patients, the liver injury is due to chronic excessive alcohol consumption and manifests as alcoholic hepatitis (an acute inflammation of the liver), cirrhosis, or alcoholic hepatitis superimposed on a background of cirrhosis. Mild alcoholic hepatitis may be asymptomatic and reversible, but where the hepatitis is more severe, up to 65% of those affected die from it. The incidence of alcoholic hepatitis in the UK seems set to increase with the rise in heavy drinking, particularly among women. Here we

Increasing significance is being attributed to outpatient detoxification treatment of alcohol-dependent patients. Many patients want to undergo outpatient detoxification or even carry it out without professional supervision. In some Scandinavian countries and in the USA, outpatient detoxification under medical supervision has increased substantially. In these countries, numerous studies describe outpatient alcohol detoxification as a safe and cost-reducing method. These studies vary in many aspects, especially regarding the nature and dose of the withdrawal medication, but also concerning the i

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a condition characterized histologically by macrovesicular steatosis and lobular hepatitis with necrosis or ballooning degeneration and/or fibrosis--a picture resembling alcoholic hepatitis, in the absence of alcohol abuse. Most patients with NASH are asymptomatic, and the disease is detected incidentally. The most common signs of NASH are hepatomegaly and laboratory abnormalities, which include a 2-4-fold elevation of serum aminotransferase levels, while other liver function test results are usually normal. Most patients with NASH are obese, many have di
