AIM: To present the long-term structural and functional outcome of children treated with diode laser for retinopathy of prematurity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of six premature babies (12 eyes) in whom diode laser treatment was performed for acute retinopathy were followed up. The mean birth weight was 1185.0 +/- 309.6 g and mean gestational age was 28.5 +/- 1.87 weeks. Long term follow-up (18 to 41 months) included retinal examination, refractive status of the eye, and orthoptic evaluation: strabismus, amblyopia and nystagmus assessment.

PURPOSE: Evaluation of the long-term functional results of the treatment of unilateral congenital cataract (UCC) surgery before age 1.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 20 consecutive cases of UCC operated on before age 1 and followed by the same medical team during the entire treatment period. Lens implantation adopted when surgically possible (15 cases) and medical treatment of amblyopia are described. A 34-year-old asymptomatic woman with a history of amblyopia in her right eye presented for a routine examination. Fundus examination revealed broad myelinated nerve fibers along with telangiectatic vessels. Wide-field fluorescein angiography revealed no evidence of ischemia or active retinal neovascularization. In this sample of craniofrontonasal dysplasia, a 44.4% prevalence of visual impairment was observed, with more than half being due to potentially correctable causes of visual loss, including amblyopia and anisometropia. High prevalences of strabismus (88.9%) and V-pattern (55.5%) in craniofrontonasal dysplasia were also demonstrated. All three patients who underwent strabismus surgery showed improvement in ocular alignment postoperatively. This group needs regular eye examinations to assess for visual impairment and provide timely intervention for modifiable causes of visual loss.

Orthoptic therapy was instituted in a 29-year-old patient having moderate amblyopia, constant small-angle esotropia, and large and steady eccentric fixation. This combination of factors, especially the age, pointed toward a poor prognosis for attainment of markedly improved vision function. Rate of recovery of several monocular vision functions was monitored during one year of orthoptic therapy. Results showed substantial improvement in most areas, thus providing evidence of neural plasticity at multiple sites in the visual pathways in this adult amblyope.

Of 51 patients with congenital glaucoma, 13 had unilateral and 38 bilateral disease. Pressure was controlled at 8 to 24 mm Hg in 76 of the 89 affected eyes. Forty-one of these 76 eyes had visual acuity poorer than 6/15 (20/50); optic nerve damage as shown by visual field testing was the cause in 20, and medial opacities, including irregular corneal astigmatism, was the cause in 15. In only six eyes did the poor vision result from anisometropic amblyopia.
