Comparisons of pastoralists perceptions about rangeland resource utilisation in the Middle Awash Valley of Ethiopia.

Pastoralism is the most dominant land use form in the arid rangelands of Sub-Saharan Africa, but this rangeland-based lifestyle is under threat. As a consequence a study was conducted in the Middle Awash Valley of Ethiopia with the main objectives of assessing and comparing the broad perceptions of two pastoral groups (the Oromo ethnic group living in Kereyu-Fantale and the Afar ethnic group living in Awash-Fantale) on the usage of the existing rangeland resources, and their views on constraints and possible solutions. Data were collected from 90 Oromo and 55 Afar households. Despite the diffe

Observations of basic diagnostic profile patterns seen in some common disorders of backyard poultry species.

Poultry species--chickens, ducks, geese--are becoming increasingly popular as pets. As such, requests for accurate diagnoses and treatment are being received by the veterinary community from the public. Unlike the food animal and production-oriented aspects of poultry medicine, success with these pet birds is contingent on preserving the human-pet bird bond, as defined by the individual client. This article presents some of this author's observations in diagnostic profiles on some selected disorders of backyard poultry.

The Inheritance of Hearing Loss and Deafness: A Historical Perspective.

If the term "genetics" is a relatively recent proposition, introduced in 1905 by English biologist William Bateson, who rediscovered and spread in the scientific community Mendel's principles of inheritance, since the dawn of human civilization the influence of heredity has been recognized, especially in agricultural crops and animal breeding. And, later, in familial dynasties. In this concise review, we outline the evolution of the idea of hereditary hearing loss, up to the current knowledge of molecular genetics and epigenetics.

Oral and Dental Pain Management.

Pain has been defined as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with or resembling that associated with actual or potential tissue damage. Pets often experience the same pain as people; however, dental pain is often overlooked, discounted, or unseen/hidden in patients, as the inability to communicate does not negate the possibility that a human or a nonhuman animal experiences pain. This article discusses types of pain and the methods and medications available to treat and prevent oral pain.

Methods to Identify Rat and Mouse Retinal Ganglion Cells in Retinal Flat-Mounts.

The identification of distinct retinal ganglion cell (RGC) populations in flat-mounted retinas is key to investigating pathological or pharmacological effects in these cells. In this chapter, we review the main techniques for detecting the total population of RGCs and various of their subtypes in whole-mounted retinas of pigmented and albino rats and mice, four of the animal strains most studied by the scientific community in the retina field. These methods are based on the studies published by the Vidal-Sanz's laboratory.

Case Presentation: Monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that initially appeared in West and Central Africa, and is primarily transmitted to humans from animals. It moved to the United States in 2003, which was the first time the disease had left the African continent. It is still uncommon in the United States and elsewhere, although outbreaks have occurred, especially in gay communities,1-3 causing it to be declared a health emergency in some areas. (SKINmed. 2022;20:410-411).

Territorially Stratified Modeling for Sustainable Management of Free-Roaming Cat Populations in Spain: A National Approach to Urban and Rural Environmental Planning.

This study presents the scientific and methodological foundation of Spain's first national framework for the ethical management of community cat populations: the Action Plan for the Management of Community Cat Colonies (PACF), launched in 2025 under the mandate of Law 7/2023. This pioneering legislation introduces a standardized, nationwide obligation for trap-neuter-return (TNR)-based management of free-roaming cats, defined as animals living freely, territorially attached, and with limited socialization toward humans. The PACF aims to support municipalities in implementing this mandate throu

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with zoonotic disease transmission risk in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Hunters, vendors, and consumers are key actors in the wildlife trade value chain in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, and potentially face an elevated risk of exposure to zoonotic diseases. Understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) associated with the risk of zoonotic disease transmission in these communities is therefore critical for developing recommendations to prevent or mitigate zoonotic outbreaks in the future. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative methods were combined to understand KAP associated zoonotic diseases transmission risk in communities involved in the

Disruption of zinc transporter ZnT3 transcriptional activity and synaptic vesicular zinc in the brain of Huntington's disease transgenic mouse.

BACKGROUND: The initial intestinal microbiota acquired from different sources has profound impacts on animal health and productivity. In modern poultry production practices, the source(s) of the establishing microbes and their overall contribution during development of gastrointestinal tract communities are still unclear. Using fertilized eggs from two independent sources, we assessed the impact of eggshell- and environmental-associated microbial communities on the successional processes and bacterial community structure throughout the intestinal tract of chickens for up to 6 weeks post-hatch.

Improvement of aquaculture water quality by mixed Bacillus and its effects on microbial community structure.

Microbial remediation, especially the application of probiotics, has recently gained popularity in improving water quality and maintaining aquatic animal health. The efficacy and mechanism of mixed Bacillus for improvement of water quality and its effects on aquatic microbial community structure remain unknown. To elucidate these issues, we applied two groups of mixed Bacillus (Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus subtilis (A0 + BS) and Bacillus megaterium and Bacillus coagulans (A0 + BC)) to the aquaculture system of Crucian carp. Our results showed that the improvement effect of mixed Bacillus A

A retrospective sero-epidemiological survey of bovine brucellosis on commercial and communal farming systems in Namibia from 2004 to 2018.

Cattle production is the major livestock production activity and the mainstay of Namibia's economy. Sustained beef exports are contingent on a sound sanitary environment where diseases such as brucellosis are under control. In this retrospective study, 49,718 bovine brucellosis testing results from 2004 to 2018 were analyzed to determine the proportion of sero-positive cattle and herds, and the spatial distribution of positive reactors from commercial and communal areas. In total, 244 positive reactors were identified based on the Rose Bengal Test (RBT) and the Complement Fixation Test (CFT) i

Characterizing the vaginal microbiota of high and low producing Poll Merino and White Suffolk ewes.

There is a substantial, and growing, body of research focused on manipulating gastrointestinal microbes to affect health and production. However, the maternal vaginal microbiota and its effects on neonatal inoculation and lifetime production have received little attention. We aimed to characterize the vaginal microbes of domesticated sheep to determine whether they differ across sheep breeds with differing meat and wool growth potentials and to determine a link between vaginal microbes and high and low producing animals. A flock of White Suffolk (n = 136) and Poll Merino (n = 210) ewes were so

Role of social behaviour in the epidemiology of lobomycosis-like disease (LLD) in estuarine common bottlenose dolphins from Ecuador.

Lobomycosis-like disease (LLD) is a chronic granulomatous skin disorder that affects Delphinidae worldwide. LLD has been observed in common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador, since 1990. Although exogenous factors such as salinity and pollution may play a role in the pathogenesis of this disease in estuarine and coastal dolphin communities, we hypothesized that demography and social behaviour may also influence its epidemiology. To address this issue, the role of social behaviour in the distribution and prevalence of LLD was assessed through hierarchica

Analysis of molecular epidemiologic characteristics of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli colonizing feces in hospital patients and community dwellers in a Japanese city.

Infectious diseases caused by extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli are prevalent because of nosocomial infection. In addition, colonization of ESBL-producing E. coli in the intestinal tract of community dwellers due to the contamination of meat or environmental water is assumed to be one of the sources, but the causes have not been clarified. To analyze these factors, we investigated the difference in clonal groups using a combination of phylogenetic groups and multilocus sequence typing of ESBL-producing E. coli, which were obtained from the feces of an inpatient gr

The panzootic spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 sublineage 2.3.4.4b: a critical appraisal of One Health preparedness and prevention.

Changes in the epidemiology and ecology of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza are devastating wild bird and poultry populations, farms and communities, and wild mammals worldwide. Having originated in farmed poultry, H5N1 viruses are now spread globally by wild birds, with transmission to many mammal and avian species, resulting in 2024 in transmission among dairy cattle with associated human cases. These ecological changes pose challenges to mitigating the impacts of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza on wildlife, ecosystems, domestic animals, food security, and humans. H5N1 highly pa
