For this experience report we have selected out of a total of 950 eyes with retinal detachment, 373 eyes and have sorted them out into three study groups: myopia over 8 d (197 eyes including 14 bilateral detachments), surgical aphakia (102 eyes) and traumatic detachment (74 eyes). Intraocular lens implants have been around for more than 25 years. On the verge of a major breakthrough to ever widening popularity, there is, however, a general lack of understanding of the pertinent optical principles. A critical comparison is made between this new method and conventional methods of correcting aphakia. Revlens is a new, soft acrylic rubber extended-wear contact lens. We fitted 21 eyes in 15 patients. The indications included 15 eyes in 10 patients with aphakia due to congenital cataracts. The developmental cataracts were associated with persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, Down's syndrome, microphthalmos and Peter's anomaly. The causes of blindness in Yemen were determined in people aged 50+ years in both a community- and hospital-based study and documented using WHO/PBL criteria.
