Fracture risk and correlating factors of a pediatric population with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a nationwide matched study.

The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of fracture and the difference between sexes from a nationwide database of fracture risk among children aged 4-17 years with or without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, ICD-9-CD codes 314). The Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID 2000) was used to analyze fracture characteristics of children from the National Health Insurance that covered 96.1% of the Taiwanese population (N=21.4 million). A total of 7200 ADHD children aged between 4 and 17 years whose diagnosis had been confirmed in at least three outpatient clinics bet

Association of pyrethroid pesticide exposure with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in a nationally representative sample of U.S. children.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroid pesticides cause abnormalities in the dopamine system and produce an ADHD phenotype in animal models, with effects accentuated in males versus females. However, data regarding behavioral effects of pyrethroid exposure in children is limited. We examined the association between pyrethroid pesticide exposure and ADHD in a nationally representative sample of US children, and tested whether this association differs by sex. METHODS: Data are from 8-15 year old participants (N = 687) in the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Exposure was assessed usin

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of guanfacine extended release in adolescents aged 13-17 years with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The safety and efficacy of guanfacine extended release (up to 4 mg/day) for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents aged 6-17 years is well documented. Data suggest that weight-adjusted doses of guanfacine extended release >0.08 mg/kg but ≤0.12 mg/kg, if tolerated, may provide additional clinical benefits. For many adolescents, such dosing would exceed 4 mg/day, the highest approved dose. This open-label multicenter study evaluated the safety, tolerability, and steady-state pharmacokinetics of guanfacine extended release at escalated forced doses ≤9 mg/day i

Familial-Environmental Risk Factors in South African Children With Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A Case-Control Study.

We investigated familial and environmental risk factors in a cohort of South African children diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A prospective, hospital-based case control study was conducted comprising 50 children diagnosed with ADHD and 50 matched non-ADHD controls. The adjusted effect of familial-environmental risk factors on ADHD was determined by systematic assessment. Birth complications, parental psychiatric disorder, maternal ADHD, early childhood trauma, and nonmaternal child care were significant risk factors for ADHD. Prolonged breastfeeding was found to

Comparison of verbal learning and memory in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have deficits in verbal learning and recall. However, the specificity of these deficits has not been adequately tested. In the current study, verbal learning and memory performance of children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure was compared to children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a disorder commonly seen in alcohol-exposed children. METHODS: Performance on the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) was examined in 3 groups of children (N=22/group): (i) heavy prenatal alcohol expo

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and nocturnal epileptiform activity in children with epilepsy admitted to a national epilepsy center.

The aim of this study was to determine if there exists a relationship between attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the quantity of focal nocturnal epileptiform activity on the EEG (FNEA) measured as the percentage of epileptiform activity during non-REM sleep (spike index). This was accomplished with a prospective study of children aged 6-14 years consecutively admitted to our center. Of 362 patients, 44 (12.2%) had previously been diagnosed with ADHD. Twenty-four-hour ambulatory EEG recording and assessment of ADHD according to DSM-IV were performed in 46 children suspected of

Abnormal resting-state functional connectivity patterns of the putamen in medication-naïve children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Structural and functional alterations of the putamen have been reported in patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but the functional relationships between this area and other brain regions are seldom explored. In the present study, seed-based correlation analyses were performed in the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data to examine the differences in functional connectivity of the putamen between medication-naïve children with ADHD and normal children. Positive functional connectivity with the putamen-ROIs was seen in bilateral sensorimotor ar

Norepinephrine transporter polymorphisms in Tourette syndrome with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: no evidence for significant association.

Noradrenergic abnormalities have been proposed in the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Patients with Tourette syndrome with (n=115) and without (n=110) attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder were evaluated for association with two single nucleotide polymorphisms of the norepinephrine transporter gene (SLC6A2); a T-182C single nucleotide polymorphism located in the 5' flanking promoter region and a silent mutation (G1287A) occurring in exon 9. A polymerase chain reaction restriction enzyme assay was developed for the T-182C single nucleotide p

Methylphenidate improves reading performance in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and comorbid dyslexia: an unblinded clinical trial.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia are frequently co-occurring disorders. Although methylphenidate (MPH) is the primary treatment for ADHD, the effect on reading in children with these comorbid problems is not yet known. This study was an unblinded clinical trial to evaluate the reading performance before and after treatment with MPH. Reading performance was compared with General Linear Model repeated measures between three groups: (1) an experimental group of children with both ADHD and dyslexia (N = 24), (2) a control group of children with ADHD (N = 9) and (3) a co

Perception of speech and nonspeech stimuli by children with and without reading disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The auditory temporal deficit hypothesis predicts that children with reading disability (RD) will exhibit deficits in the perception of speech and nonspeech acoustic stimuli in discrimination and temporal ordering tasks when the interstimulus interval (ISI) is short. Initial studies testing this hypothesis did not account for the potential presence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Temporal order judgment and discrimination tasks were administered to children with (1) RD/no-ADHD (n=38), (2) ADHD (n=29), (3) RD and ADHD (RD/ADHD; n=32), and (4) no impairment (NI; n=43). Contra
