The systemic cardiovascular effects of major trauma, especially neurotrauma, contribute to death and permanent disability in trauma patients and treatments are needed to improve outcomes. In some trauma patients, dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system produces a state of adrenergic overstimulation, causing either a sustained elevation in catecholamines (sympathetic storm) or oscillating bursts of paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity. Trauma can also activate innate immune responses that release cytokines and damage-associated molecular patterns into the circulation. This combination of al…

We performed sympathetic skin response (SSR) studies on 29 male patients diagnosed as chronic alcoholics according to DSM-IV criteria. The average age was 43 years and the mean duration of alcohol abuse was 21 years, with all patients having a history of alcohol abuse for a minimum of 4 years. None of the patients had any symptoms and/nor signs related to autonomic nervous system dysfunction and all demonstrated normal nerve conduction velocities. Hand and foot latencies in alcoholics were prolonged relative to controls and the difference was statistically significant: reflected by p values of…

Changes in neural activity play a key role in many symptoms of allergic disease, including sneezing, coughing, itching, and ocular irritation, among others. The mechanisms underlying allergen-induced changes in neural activity (reflexes) are largely unknown and under active investigation. Allergic inflammation can affect neural activity on a variety of levels, including at the primary afferent sensory nerve, integrative centers of the central nervous system, autonomic ganglia, and autonomic neuroeffector junction. At the level of the afferent sensory nerve, mediators released after allergen ex

BACKGROUND: An accumulating body of evidence indicates that peripheral physiological rhythms help regulate and organize large-scale brain activity. Given that schizophrenia (SZ) is characterized by marked abnormalities in oscillatory cortical activity as well as changes in autonomic function, the present study aimed to identify mechanisms by which central and autonomic nervous system deficits may be related. We evaluated phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) as a physiological mechanism through which autonomic nervous system (ANS) and central nervous system (CNS) activity are integrated and that may …

UNLABELLED: The untreated sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS) is associated with cardiovascular complications (arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia) and increased morbidity and mortality. Disorders of the autonomic nervous system function are probably responsible for cardiac arrhythmia. Most researchers evaluated autonomic function using cardiovascular tests. The aim of our study was to assess whether neurophysiological method--sympathetic skin response (SSR)--could be useful in testing function of the autonomic nervous system in patients with SAS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: T…

This article, which forms part of the life sciences series and is the last of three articles on the nervous system, explores the major divisions of the peripheral nervous system. Motor and sensory nerves will be described before a more detailed examination of the cranial and spinal nerves is provided. The autonomic nervous system will be explored, including the diverse roles of the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions. The role of spinal reflexes in maintaining homeostasis is identified. Motor neurone disease will be discussed briefly as an example of a disorder of the peripheral nervous …

Cardiac autonomic dysfunction has been reported in patients suffering from schizophrenia. The aim of the present study was to evaluate gastr … zophrenia. Future studies need to explore the influence of the disease on different branches of the autonomic nervous system and clinical consequences of enteric dysfunction. Our findings point to a possible systemic autonomic imbalance that needs to be studied in respect to the neurobiology of schizophrenia.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a role in a wide range of somatic and mental diseases. Using a model of neurovisceral integration, this article describes how autonomic imbalance and decreased parasympathetic tone in particular may be the final common pathway linking negative affective states and conditions to ill health. The central nervous system (CNS) network that regulates autonomic balance (central autonomic network, CAN) is closely related and partially overlaps with networks serving executive, social, affective, attentional, and motivated behavior (anterior executive region, AER…

The evolution of the autonomic nervous system provides an organizing principle to interpret the adaptive significance of physiological systems in promoting social behavior and responding to social challenges. This phylogenetic shift in neural regulation of the autonomic nervous system in mammals has produced a neuroanatomically integrated social engagement system, including neural mechanisms that regulate both cardiac vagal tone and muscles involved in vocalization. Mammalian vocalizations are part of a conspecific social communication system, with several mammalian species modulating acoustic…

Rosacea is increasingly recognized as a complex inflammatory disorder extending beyond isolated cutaneous pathology, involving dysregulated interactions between the skin, gastrointestinal system, and central nervous system. The skin-gut-brain axis has emerged as a relevant conceptual framework for understanding this multifactorial disease, integrating gut microbiota dysbiosis, neuroimmune signaling, autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and stress-related mechanisms. The aim of this narrative hypothesis-driven overview is to reframe rosacea as a neuroimmune disorder in which central nervous sy…

OBJECTIVES: To review infectious diseases that may cause autonomic dysfunction.
METHODS: Review of published papers indexed in medline/emba … ropathy, tetanus and botulism are examples of bacterial infections releasing toxins that affect the autonomic nervous system.
CONCLUSIONS: Autonomic dysfunction may be responsible for additional morbidity in some infectious diseases.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) interferes with the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The effect on the cardiovascular system will depend on the extent of damage to the spinal/central component of ANS. The cardiac changes are caused by loss of supraspinal sympathetic control and relatively increased parasympathetic cardiac control. Decreases in sympathetic activity result in heart rate and the arterial blood pressure changes, and may cause arrhythmias, in particular bradycardia, with the risk of cardiac arrest in those with cervical or high thoracic injuries. The objective of this review is to give a…

Vasovagal syncope is defined as a reflex loss of consciousness related to reaction to various stimuli as orthostatic stress, pain or emotions connected with loss of muscle postural tone. The aetiology of this disorder is still unknown. The imbalance between the parts of autonomic nervous system and other homeostasis-related systems as renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, peptides as endothelin, neuropeptide Y, vasopressin, adrenomedullin and cAMP, adenosine and AMP can play an important role in the development of vasovagal syncope. In the first part of the paper the authors describe the mecha…

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) disrupts critical autonomic pathways responsible for the regulation of the immune function. Consequently, individuals with SCI often exhibit a spectrum of immune dysfunctions ranging from the development of damaging pro-inflammatory responses to severe immunosuppression. Thus, it is imperative to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the extent and mechanisms through which SCI-induced autonomic dysfunction influences the immune response. In this review, we provide an overview of the anatomical organization and physiology of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), eluc…
