Alcohol consumption patterns and predictors of use following liver transplantation for alcoholic liver disease.

For patients who receive a liver transplant (LTX) for alcoholic liver disease (ALD), investigators are focusing beyond survival to determine specific alcohol use outcomes. Studies suggest the use of alcohol ranges from 8 to 22% for the first post-transplant year with cumulative rates reaching 30 to 40% by 5 years following transplantation. Yet while investigators are interested in determining specific rates of alcohol use and predictors of use, only three studies since 1990 have been prospective. In 1998, we began a prospective study of post-LTX alcohol consumption in ALD recipients using mult

Comparing behavior following binge ethanol in adolescent and adult DBA/2 J mice.

The adolescent brain undergoes maturation in areas critically involved in reward, addiction, and memory. Adolescents consume alcohol more than any other drug, typically in a binge-like manner. While adults also binge on alcohol, the adolescent brain is more susceptible to ethanol-related damages due to its ongoing development, which may result in persistent behavioral and physical changes, including differences in myelination in the frontal cortex. Sex also impacts ethanol metabolism and addiction progression, suggesting females are more sensitive than males. This study addressed memory, socia

Substance use among Danish psychiatric patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with psychiatric disorders have a greater risk of mortality than the general population. Use or abuse of substances, including alcohol, play a crucial part in this context. Moreover, it is well known that drug use can worsen psychopathology and reduce treatment compliance. However, the magnitude of these problems among Danish psychiatric patients has not been studied previously. AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate substance use among psychiatric patients in the Capital Region of Denmark. METHODS: Outpatients from five psychiatric units were asked to complete a

Internet-based interventions for young people with problematic substance use: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of randomised trials of web-based interventions for problematic substance use by adolescents and young adults. DATA SOURCES: An extensive search conducted in February 2009 of computer databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Current Contents) and manual searches of key references. STUDY SELECTION: Randomised comparisons of fully automated web-based interventions specifically targeting adolescents and young adults (ie, typically school or tertiary students, < or = 25 years old) versus other interventions. DATA SYNTHESIS: 16 relevant studies were identified, and

Prenatal choline supplementation mitigates behavioral alterations associated with prenatal alcohol exposure in rats.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure can alter physical and behavioral development, leading to a range of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Despite warning labels, pregnant women continue to drink alcohol, creating a need to identify effective interventions to reduce the severity of alcohol's teratogenic effects. Choline is an essential nutrient that influences brain and behavioral development. Recent studies indicate that choline supplementation can reduce the teratogenic effects of developmental alcohol exposure. The present study examined whether choline supplementation during prenatal eth

Basic demographics, health practices, and health status of U.S. medical students.

BACKGROUND: There has never been a nationally representative survey of medical students' personal health-related practices, although they are inherently of interest and may affect students' patient-counseling practices. METHODS: To determine basic health practices and status, a survey was conducted of medical students (n =2316 individuals responding to > or =1 survey) in the Class of 2003 at freshman orientation, entrance to wards, and senior year in a nationally representative sample of 16 medical schools (response rate=80.3%). RESULTS: Most medical students (84%) reported never having smok

The clinical course of alcoholism in Trinidad and Tobago.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical course of alcoholism has been described as a series of distinct, alcohol-related life events that occur in an orderly sequence. However, whether that sequence differs, depending on ethnicity and country of origin, is less clear. The purposes of this study were to investigate the sequence and progression of alcohol-related life events in individuals of East Indian (Indo) and African (Afro) heritage on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and compare those results with data reported previously by the Collaborative study for the Genetics of Alcoholism (COGA). Association between C-reactive protein and depression among alcohol users in the United States: A population-based analysis of National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2015-2020.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation and alcohol use are linked to depression, but whether their effects are independent or interactive remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine inflammation as an independent correlate of depression among U.S. adults who consume alcohol and a modifier of the alcohol-depression association. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2015-2020 including adults aged ≥18 reporting past-year alcohol use(n = 3019). Depression was assessed using the PHQ-9, with scores categorized as no depression(0), minimal(1-4), mild(5-9), and moderate-severe(10-27). Inflammation was measured

Aging Exacerbates Binge Ethanol-Mediated Bone Toxicity in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption and aging are factors promoting osteopenia and osteoporosis. How these factors interact is poorly understood. To investigate this relationship, a binge ethanol exposure model in mice was used to determine how aging affects skeletal responses to binge ethanol. METHODS: Dmp1-Cre TdTomato mice with the fluorescent marker TdTomato expressed in osteoblasts and osteocytes, and control mice without Cre expression were used. Mice of both sexes at 12 weeks and 78 weeks of age were gavaged for four consecutive days with 3, 3, 4, and 4.5 g of ethanol/kg of body weight or

Dihydrotestosterone and Finasteride Effects on Alcohol Cue-Elicited Brain Activity in Males With Heavy Episodic Drinking.

Preliminary animal and human studies have shown that blood dihydrotestosterone concentrations are increased in males with alcohol use disorder, and 5α-reductase inhibitors, which decrease dihydrotestosterone concentrations, reduce alcohol consumption. To gain mechanistic insight, we studied the effects of reduced dihydrotestosterone concentrations following pharmacological 5α-reductase inhibition on alcohol cue-elicited brain activity and alcohol craving in males with problematic alcohol use. To this end, this randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover challenge experiment investigated associat

Perfluorooctane sulfonate exposure and alcohol-associated liver disease severity in a mouse chronic-binge ethanol feeding model.

Exposure to pollutants, including the ubiquitous "forever chemical," perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) has increasingly been associated with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Recent epidemiological evidence has identified associations between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure and increased liver injury in alcohol consumers, suggesting potential interactions between these exposures. However, the intersection of pollutant exposures and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) is not well studied. We hypothesize that pollutants may disrupt hepatic metabolism

Daily patterns of single and poly-substance use among adolescent and young adult females: A day-level latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Substance use is prevalent among adolescents and young adults (AYAs). Polysubstance use is associated with poorer outcomes than single substance use alone. However, few studies have examined patterns of daily use of substance(s) among AYA females, as well as associated factors. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to 1) identify daily substance use patterns in AYA females, and 2) examine the association with select predisposing factors (i.e. impulsivity and depressive symptoms) and risky sexual behavior. METHOD: A sample of 15-24 year old females with recent binge drinking (n = 149), reported dai…
