Visuo-vestibular biofeedback in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

It is well known that diseases of the vestibular system can be compensated by increased spontaneous activity of other systems engaged in maintaining equilibrium, i.e. proprioceptive and visual systems. A complex approach using multisensory stimulation is the optimal way to achieve vestibular compensation. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of vestibular rehabilitation therapy as measured by posturography in a group of 72 patients suffering from vestibular disorders: Ménière's disease (n = 31), neuritis vestibularis (n = 21) and vertebrobasilar insufficiency (n = 20). Patients und

Supplementary home biofeedback improves quality of life in younger patients with fecal incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Biofeedback is a scarce, resource-intensive clinical therapy. It is used to treat patients with bowel problems, including fecal incontinence (FI), who fail to respond to simple dietary advice, medication, or pelvic floor exercises. Populations are aging and younger cohorts use technology in managing their health, affording FI self-management opportunities. AIM: Does supplementary home-based biofeedback improve FI and quality of life (QOL)? METHODS: Seventy-five incontinent participants (12 male), mean age 61.1 years, consented to participate. Thirty-nine patients (5 male) were ra

Heart rate response to fear conditioning and virtual reality in subthreshold PTSD.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a significant health concern for U.S. military service members (SMs) returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Early intervention to prevent chronic disability requires greater understanding of subthreshold PTSD symptoms, which are associated with impaired physical health, mental health, and risk for delayed onset PTSD. We report a comparison of physiologic responses for recently deployed SMs with high and low subthreshold PTSD symptoms, respectively, to a fear conditioning task and novel virtual reality paradigm (Virtual Iraq). The high symptom group demonst

Review of pediatric migraine headaches refractory to medical management.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical treatment of migraine headache is a recent innovation that has broadened the potential patient population who may benefit from craniofacial surgical techniques to millions of affected adults. However, the population at risk in the pediatric age group has not been clearly established. The present retrospective review was performed to provide demographic information of the adolescent migraine in a major children's hospital. This information is essential before considering surgical treatment of migraine in this age group. METHODS: Five hundred eighty-eight charts of patie

Integrated Biosignal Analysis to Provide Biomarkers for Recognizing Time Perception Difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Time perception refers to the capability to recognize the passage of time. The cerebellum is located at the back of the brain, underlying the occipital and temporal lobes. Dyschronometria is a cerebellar dysfunction, in which a person cannot precisely estimate the amount of time that has passed. Cardiac indicators such as heart rate (HR) variability have been associated with mental function in healthy individuals. Moreover, time perception has been previously studied concerning cardiac signs. Human time perception is influenced by various factors such as attention and drowsiness. A

A prospective observational study for a Federated Artificial Intelligence solution for moniToring mental Health status after cancer treatment (FAITH): study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common condition among cancer patients, across several points in the disease trajectory. Although presenting higher prevalence rates than the general population, it is often not reported or remains unnoticed. Moreover, somatic symptoms of depression are common in the oncological context and should not be dismissed as a general symptom of cancer. It becomes even more challenging to track psychological distress in the period after the treatment, where connection with the healthcare system typically becomes sporadic. The main goal of the FAITH project is to remotely id

Fecal incontinence: a clinical approach.

"Fecal incontinence" is defined as the involuntary loss of stool at any time of life after toilet training. It is a socially and psychologically devastating condition for patients and their families, and a topic which both patients and physicians are reluctant to approach. Although the true prevalence of fecal incontinence is unknown, studies have reported it to be as high as 2. 2% in the general population, with significantly higher rates among nursing home residents and hospitalized elderly. Risk factors include advancing age, female gender and multiparity. An understanding of pelvic floor a

Personalized musculoskeletal models show that gait biofeedback alters knee cartilage contact mechanics in ACL-reconstructed subjects.

Anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed (ACLR) patients exhibit less dynamic knee loading during walking than uninjured controls, which may be harmful to the joint. Increasing the first peak vertical ground reaction force (vGRF) during walking by visual biofeedback promotes more dynamic loading. Musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling has served to simulate the resulting knee contact mechanics from this intervention, but the impact of model personalization has not been examined. Therefore, we compared the use of generic and personalized MSK models to characterize knee joint contact mechanics during th

Telehealth exercise for continence after gynaecological cancer treatment (TELE-CONNECT): a protocol for a co-designed pragmatic randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is the most prevalent pelvic floor disorder following treatment for gynaecological cancer with a distressing impact on quality-of-life in survivors. Physiotherapist-supervised pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training is recommended as the first-line intervention for UI in community-dwelling women. However, it is not known if this intervention is effective in women following treatment for gynaecological cancer, nor whether PFM training can be delivered entirely remotely. The primary aim of this study is to investigate if a telehealth-delivered PFM training progra
