Chest wall defects are an unusual complication of burn injury, generally seen after high-voltage electrical burns. Here we report the case of a 57-year-old man who developed costal chondritis and osteomyelitis 23 months after flame injury, which covered 50% of the total body surface area. Management included the resection of two ribs and coverage with an omental flap, overlaid by a split-thickness skin graft during the same surgical procedure. The incidence of burn injuries in pregnancy is low. Nevertheless, burns can cause maternal and foetal mortality and should be treated aggressively if substantial. Minor burns may frequently be managed without hospitalization. A 27-year-old primigravid woman with a gestational age of 38+6 presented with an abdominal partial-thickness burn covering 3% of her total body surface area. Conservative treatment was conducted in the emergency department. Medical induction of labour was performed. A healthy boy was delivered vaginally within 36 hours after the injury.

A 53 yr old diabetic male presented with a 34% total body surface area (TBSA) deep partial- and full-thickness burns. On post burn days 4 and 9, all of his burns were excised and grafted. Although he had only been treated with topical antibiotics, he developed Clostridium difficile colitis after his second surgery that progressed to Toxic Megacolon and perforation. The incidence and treatment of Toxic Megacolon secondary to C. difficile is reviewed. Early diagnosis and treatment with colonoscopic decompression may obviate the need for surgery.

Thyroid disorders to be discussed are a cyst, a nodule with an echo-free centre, connatal athyreosis and goitre.

The SB Charité intervertebral disc prostheses consist of two metal end-plates and an interposed polyethylene slide core. These were subjected to static and dynamic testing in a servohydraulic test rig. When embedded in polypropylene, the prostheses were found to function adequately under a high static load, and under a lighter dynamic load for a long time. When tested in a cadaveric vertebral segment, a large end-plate surface area proved to be of critical importance in preventing collapse of the prosthesis into the vertebral body.

Factors were analyzed that limit the range of environmental conditions in which stress from heat may be relieved by evaporative cooling in shaded animals. Evaporative cooling reduces air temperature (Ta), but increases humidity. Equations were developed to predict Ta reduction as a function of ambient temperature and humidity and of humidity in cooled air. Thermal tolerance is improved in burn survivors following 7 days of exercise heat acclimation. It is unknown whether post junctional sudomotor and/or cutaneous vascular adaptations in noninjured skin contribute to this improvement.
