[Direct optical resolution of acidic biphenyl drugs by high performance liquid chromatography on tris(3,5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) of cellulose].

A chiral stationary phase was prepared by coating cellulose-tris(3, 5-dimethylphenylcarbamate) onto aminopropylated silica gel. A series of enantiomeric acidic biphenyl drugs were directly resolved on the chiral stationary phase (CSP) by normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A hexane-2-propanol eluting system containing 1% of trifluoroacetic acid was used as mobile phase. Efficient optical resolution of the acidic biphenyl drugs has been attained. The factors that influence chiral discrimination such as structural characeristic of the samples and mobile phase were investi…

Dialdehyde cellulose-l-lysine Schiff base conjugate synergistically modulates water status, texture, and antibacterial activity of wheat gluten.

To address poor water retention, texture deterioration, and microbial contamination in gluten-based products, a dialdehyde cellulose-l-lysine Schiff base conjugate (DAC-Lys) was synthesized. DAC-Lys-2 (12 h oxidation, 4-6% addition) densified the network with more regularly distributed pores, increased tightly bound water from 6.93% to 8.32% and reduced mobile water from 82.91% to 80.75%, indicating significantly restricted water mobility. Baked gluten containing 6% DAC-Lys-2 exhibited 44.61% lower hardness and 39.13% higher elastic force than unmodified gluten, a "soft yet elastic" texture. D…

A Janus bacterial cellulose patch with antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and angiogenic activities for enhanced oral ulcer healing.

Oral ulcers are complex mucosal lesions characterized by infection, inflammatory imbalance, elevated oxidative stress and impaired vascular regeneration, with therapeutic efficacy hindered by rapid drug loss in the highly wet and dynamic oral environment. Here, we developed a Janus-structured bacterial cellulose (BC)-based multifunctional oral patch (Ber@ZIF/BC, BZB) for stable retention and controlled release of Ber@ZIF (BZ) at ulcer sites. Encapsulation of berberine within ZIF and incorporation into Janus BC endowed the system with robust wet adhesion and microenvironment-responsive drug rel…

High-quantity capture of heterogeneous circulating tumor cells in vivo based on a multinanobody-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose cryogel.

Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) carry multidimensional information from primary tumors, yet current separation strategies lead to insufficient quantity of cells available for robust downstream analyses. To address this issue, we propose an in-vivo capture strategy for high-quantity CTC enrichment based on a multinanobody-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose cryogel (MNB-PAACcryo). By addressing the trade-off between pore size and mechanical property, the MNB-PAACcryo sets up a sieving barrier in the bloodstream. It allows free passage of blood cells through its interconnected macropores, whil…

Pulsed electric field-assisted biorefinery of soybean hulls for sequential recovery of phenolics, proteins, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.

Lignocellulosic biomass recalcitrance remains one of the main barriers to the development of efficient integrated biorefineries. In this study, pulsed electric fields (PEF) were investigated as a structural pretreatment to enhance the sequential fractionation of soybean hulls into phenolics, proteins, pectin-related fractions, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. PEF was applied at electric field strengths of 0.5-2 kV/cm prior to a sequential extraction process involving hydroethanolic extraction, citric acid extraction, and alkaline delignification. PEF significantly increased the extraction…

Acid-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents for Structural Modification of Sulphite Pulp Cellulose: A Potential Route Toward Advanced Materials.

The transition toward renewable and environmentally responsible materials has intensified interest in cellulose-based systems for use in sustainable packaging applications. Although cellulose offers biocompatibility, structural versatility, and tuneable physicochemical properties, conventional modification routes rely on harsh chemicals and generate environmentally burdensome effluents. In this study, an efficient and a potentially green strategy for cellulose modification was developed using acid-based deep eutectic solvents (DES) composed of choline chloride and lactic, acetic, or citric aci…

Three-dimensional cell-culture systems using nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose restores drug metabolism activity in HepG2 hepatocellular carcinoma cells.

Three-dimensional (3D) culture more faithfully reproducesin vivo-like cell interactions and functions than conventional two-dimensional (2D) monolayers. Although HepG2 cells are widely used in drug discovery, their 2D cultures exhibit low expression of drug-metabolizing enzymes such as cytochrome P450s (CYPs), limiting utility for toxicity and pharmacokinetic studies. Nano-fibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC) is a unique biomaterial that features exceptional homogeneity, high purity, and excellent biocompatibility. We recently employed two NFBC-based 3D culture systems: the Suspension and th…

Growth factors-infused cellulose scaffolds support cost-efficient proliferation and differentiation of bovine stem cells for cultivated meat.

Cultivated meat, which aims to replicate traditional meat using tissue engineering and stem cell biology, is a promising approach to sustainably supplementing traditional meat production to meet increasing global demand. The production of structured cultivated whole-cut-like meat constructs is not trivial; it requires a complex structure that supports cell growth, enables nutrient and waste exchange, and mimics natural texture. Here, we develop a biocompatible, porous, and anisotropic scaffold, based on directional freezing of nano and microcrystalline cellulose, which supports the growth and …

Phosphorus-Doped Cellulose-Derived Carbon Aerogel for Synergistic Adsorption of Congo Red and Cu(II) from Complex Wastewater.

Wastewater produced by dye-related industries commonly contains metal ions, together with organic dyes. Their simultaneous removal is difficult because these pollutants differ in charge, molecular size, and binding behavior. To treat wastewater cocontaminated with copper ions (Cu-(II)) and Congo red (CR), phosphorus-doped carbon aerogel (PCA) was fabricated from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose by sol-gel processing, freeze-drying, and one-step carbonization, with phytic acid serving as the phosphorus source and activator. In the single-component systems, Cu-(II) and CR are retained by PCA throu…

Hierarchically porous bacterial cellulose-derived biochar/PAA hydrogel beads for cationic dye adsorption: performance, mechanistic insights, and reusability.

The emergence of dye pollutants into aquatic environments necessitates the development of efficient, stable, and reusable adsorbents for wastewater treatment. In this study, hierarchically porous bacterial cellulose-derived biochar/poly(acrylic acid) (BCC-PAA) hydrogel beads were synthesized via gradual pH adjustment, constructing a three-dimensional network containing PAA-derived -COOH groups, oxygen-containing functionalities associated with the BCC-derived carbonaceous component and hydrogel network, and distinct BCC-derived carbonaceous domains. Physicochemical analyses revealed a highly p…

Stabilization by spherical cellulose nanocrystals and bacterial nanofibrils: modulating lipid digestion in fish oil-in-water Pickering emulsions.

BACKGROUND: This study explored the role of bacterial nanofibrils (BC) in regulating the structural characteristics, stability, and in vitro lipolysis behavior of fish oil Pickering emulsions stabilized by cellulose nanocrystals (CNC). The objective was to understand how different BC levels modify the interfacial organization of CNC-based emulsions and influence subsequent lipid digestion. RESULTS: CNC-only and CNC/BC-stabilized emulsions were initially prepared and characterized, after which the three most stable CNC/BC emulsions containing 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 wt% BC were selected for simulate…

Superelastic and highly sensitive conductive hydrogel sensor enabled by spatially confined assembly of MXene within bacterial cellulose network.

Conductive hydrogels have garnered significant attention in the field of flexible wearable sensors due to their intrinsic conductivity and tunable mechanical properties. However, simultaneously achieving both high mechanical stability and high sensing sensitivity remains a significant challenge. In this study, a conductive hydrogel with a low-hysteresis interpenetrating polymer network structure was fabricated via one-pot free-radical polymerization. The three-dimensional network of bacterial cellulose (BC) provides mechanical support for MXene, forming the first network layer of the hydrogel …

High-strength and thermally conductive bacterial cellulose-based composites via the synergy of aligned nanosheets and interfacial interactions.

Polymer-based thermally conductive composites hold great promise for thermal management in miniaturized and high-power-density electronics. However, their practical performance remains limited by discontinuous heat-transport pathways arising from the poor orientation of thermally conductive nanofillers and weak polymer-filler interfacial interactions. Here, we develop an in situ biosynthesis strategy to fabricate high-strength and thermally conductive bacterial cellulose-based nanocomposites by integrating modified nanosheets into the bacterial cellulose growth process. The growing bacterial c…

Boosting iodine conversion via bifunctional NiFe-LDH-decorated cellulose-derived carbon cathodes for durable aqueous Zn-I2 batteries.

To suppress polyiodide dissolution and sluggish I-/I2 conversion in Zn-I2 batteries, we design a bifunctional CC/NiFe-LDH@I cathode integrating physical confinement and catalytic interfaces. The cellulose-derived carbon paper confines iodine, while NiFe-LDH nanosheets chemically anchor polyiodides and catalyze the I-/I2 redox. This synergy facilitates surface-pseudocapacitive behavior and local iodine enrichment, enabling outstanding durability.

Adaptive topological networks enabled by high-aspect-ratio cellulose nanofibrils for robust and self-healing hydrogel wearable sensors.

Flexible wearable sensors for personalized healthcare and human-machine interaction require substrates combining high mechanical strength, rapid self-healing, and stable electro-conductivity. However, existing materials suffer from intrinsic trade-offs among these properties. Inspired by biological networks, we introduce a conceptual paradigm of adaptive topological networks (ATN) enabled by high-aspect-ratio cellulose nanofibrils (HAR-CNF, ~230). Unlike conventional fillers, our ATN framework positions HAR-CNF as a topological "entropy modulator" and "mechano-chemical coupling agent" orchestr…

Multiscale design of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber/biomass-derived porous composites for electromagnetic wave absorption and multifunctional protection.

Sustainable cellulose-based porous composites are promising candidates for electromagnetic wave (EMW) protection, but integrating efficient attenuation, thermal resistance, and antibacterial activity into a porous architecture remains challenging. Herein, a reed-biomass-derived porous composite was developed through multiscale engineering of magnetic-dielectric absorbers and a nanocellulose porous framework. At the microscale, graphene oxide-assisted pyrolysis produced graphene-modified reed carbon (G-RC) with increased surface roughness, defect density, and polar sites. These structural featu…

Programming structure and properties of bacterial cellulose via fermentation time and strain: a multivariate process-structure-property approach.

Bacterial cellulose (BC) is a versatile biopolymer whose properties can be influenced by fermentation conditions. Here, the effects of fermentation time (4-10 days) and microorganism (Komagataeibacter xylinus and K. hansenii) on BC were systematically evaluated. BC membranes were produced by static fermentation in Hestrin-Schramm medium at 30 °C for 4, 6, 8, or 10 days and characterized in terms of production, water absorption, structure, and mechanical properties. K. xylinus exhibited higher productivity, reaching 0.40 g L-1 day-1 during the early fermentation period, and produced membranes w…

Isolation and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from reticulated fibers covering the stem of milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.).

This study investigates the valorization of the reticulated fibrous sheath covering the stems of Silybum marianum (milk thistle) as a novel lignocellulosic source for the production of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). A modified Kruscher-Hoffer pretreatment, followed by alkaline extraction and multi-step bleaching, was applied to isolate purified cellulose with a yield of 49.0%. Subsequent sulfuric acid hydrolysis was performed to obtain two distinct products: D2 (single-step bleaching) and D3 (two-step bleaching). CNC production through the D2 process achieved a total yield of 26.46% based on t…
