Identification of molecular subtypes, prognostic status and immunotherapy response in cervical cancer based on angiogenic signature genes.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer, as one of the most common malignancies in women, is closely related to the mechanism of angiogenesis, which needs further exploration. METHODS: The squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix and cervical adenocarcinoma (CESC) data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database. CESC subtypes based on 48 angiogenesis-related genes were identified using consistent cluster analysis, and the limma package were adopted to screen the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with prognosis. Further compress the DEGs through univariate and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Se

Manipulation Under Anesthesia in Infants With Arthrogenic Newborn Torticollis: A Retrospective Case Series.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this report is to describe the manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) treatment of 6 infants with newborn torticollis with a segmental dysfunction at C1/C2. CLINICAL FEATURES: Six infants aged 4 1/2 to 15 months previously diagnosed with newborn torticollis were referred to a doctor of chiropractic owing to a failure to respond adequately to previous conservative therapies. Common physical findings were limited range of motion of the upper cervical spine. Radiographs demonstrated rotational malpositions and translation of atlas on axis in all 6 infants, and 1 had a subl

The ossification pattern in paediatric occipito-cervical spine: is it possible to estimate real age?

AIM: To retrospectively analyse the synchondrosis from the occipital bone to the whole cervical spine and determine the feasibility and validity of age estimation using computed tomography (CT) images. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 231 cervical spine or neck CT images of young children (<7 years of age) were examined. Twelve ossification centres were assessed (occiput: n = 2; atlas: n = 2; axis, n = 6; whole sub-axial vertebra: n = 2), and the ossification process was graded as open (O, fully lucent), osseous bridging (B, partially ossified), and fusion (F, totally ossified). After the fir

Predisposing Factors of Fracture Nonunion After Posterior C1 Lateral Mass Screws Combined with C2 Pedicle/Laminar Screw Fixation for Type II Odontoid Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to explore the predisposing factors for fracture nonunion after a lateral screw was combined with C2 pedicle/laminar screw for a type II odontoid fracture and hopefully provide references in decision making and surgical planning for spinal surgeons. METHODS: This is a retrospective study. By retrieving the medical records from January 2010 to July 2015 in our hospital, 117 type II odontoid fracture patients were reviewed. According to the occurrence of fracture union at the final follow-up, patients were divided into 2 groups: union and nonunion. To inv

Primary atlantoaxial bone tumors in children: management strategies and long-term follow-up.

OBJECT: Atlantoaxial tumors account for a substantial proportion of primary bone tumors in children. Before resection, surgeons must consider the complex regional anatomy, the potential for neurological compromise, craniocervical instability, and the question of tumor resectability in a growing spine. Using current technology, the authors analyzed surgical cases in this light and present outcomes and treatment recommendations after long-term patient follow-up. METHODS: The authors reviewed clinical records for 23 children whose primary atlantoaxial bone tumors were treated from 1996 through 2

Use of allograft bone for posterior C1-2 fusion.

OBJECT: An iliac crest autograft is the gold standard for bone grafting in posterior atlantoaxial arthrodesis but can be associated with significant donor-site morbidity. Conversely, an allograft has historically performed suboptimally for atlantoaxial arthrodesis as an onlay graft. The authors have modified a bone grafting technique to allow placement of a bicortical iliac crest allograft in an interpositional manner, and they evaluated it as an alternative to an autograft in posterior atlantoaxial arthrodesis. METHODS: The records of 89 consecutive patients in whom C1-2 arthrodesis was perf

C1-C2 posterior cervical fusion: long-term evaluation of results and efficacy.

Posterior wiring techniques are the most commonly used methods of achieving C1-C2 arthrodesis. Recently, transarticular screw fixation and interlaminar clamping have been advocated to achieve more secure fixation. A retrospective review of patients undergoing C1-C2 fusion for nonneoplastic disease was undertaken at the University of Toronto Hospital, with the aim of determining the long-term outcome of the selected procedures. Thirty-two patients underwent 36 procedures from 1986 to 1992, with a mean follow-up of 4.7 +/- 2.2 years (range, 2.0-8.0 yr). The most common disease processes were odo

Fatty acid metabolism-related signature suggests an oncogenic role of FASN in cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: The metabolism of fatty acids is essential in the initiation and progression of cervical cancer. The objective of this research is to develop a prognostic model associated with fatty acid metabolism and to identify the FASN protein within this framework, with the intention of investigating its function in cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CESC) and its correlation with patient prognosis. METHODS: This prognostic model was developed using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis on the training cohort derived from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) da

Cervical nodal metastasis after malignant conversion of sinonasal inverted papilloma: Report of a rare case and literature review.

Malignant conversion of sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP) occurs in approximately ten percent of cases. These tumors are classically described as locally destructive, but without metastatic potential. Only four cases of malignant conversion with cervical nodal metastases have been described in the English literature. We present the rare case of a 61-year-old Caucasian male with a nasopharyngeal recurrence of malignant SNIP with cervical and retropharyngeal nodal metastases. The patient underwent endoscopic transpterygoid with nasoseptal flap reconstruction, followed by staged bilateral and r

Accuracy and complications associated with the freehand C-1 lateral mass screw fixation technique: a radiographic and clinical assessment.

OBJECT: The aims of this study were to evaluate a large series of posterior C-1 lateral mass screws (LMSs) to determine accuracy based on CT scanning findings and to assess the perioperative complication rate related to errant screw placement. METHODS: Accuracy of screw placement was evaluated using postoperative CT scans obtained in 196 patients with atlantoaxial instability. Radiographic analysis included measurement of preoperative and postoperative CT scans to evaluate relevant anatomy and classify accuracy of instrumentation placement. Screws were graded using the following definitions:

Aneurysms from extracranial, extradurally originating posterior inferior cerebellar arteries: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms arising from the PICA are infrequent and those arising from an extracranially originating PICA in the extracranial intradural region are even rare. We report a case of bilaterally extracranial extradurally originating PICAs, each of which had an aneurysm, both being situated below the foramen magnum. This to the best of our knowledge is the first of its kind to be reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 35-year-old woman presented with giddiness and headache of 2-day duration. CT scan head revealed blood in the 4(th) ventricle. 4 vessel angiogram revealed bilateral extracranial, e

Simple identification of the third segment of the extracranial vertebral artery by extreme lateral inferior transcondylar-transtubercular exposure (ELITE).

PURPOSE: The exposure of the third segment of the extracranial vertebral artery (V3) is an important step in the extreme lateral inferior transcondylar-transtubercular exposure (ELITE) approach. The muscular suboccipital triangle provides one of the landmarks to identify the V3 segment; however, identification of this triangle and dissection of the V3 segment is not always straightforward in the actual surgery. Blind dissection below the level of the foramen magnum can lead to vertebral artery injury. While the surgeon may be able to readily define the V3 segment of the vertebral artery by fee

Atlantal stenosis: a rare cause of quadriparesis in a child. Case report.

The authors report the case of a 3-year-old boy who suffered from quadriparesis and respiratory distress after failing to execute a somersault properly. Neuroimaging revealed spinal cord contusion with marked spinal canal stenosis at the level of the atlas. No subtle instability, occult fracture, or other congenital abnormalities were confirmed. Spinal cord contusion with marked canal stenosis is rare, and only several adult cases have been reported. Severe stenosis at the level of the atlas may predispose individuals to severe spinal cord contusion, as occurred in our patient after sustaining

Effect of copper supplementation on the copper status of pasture-fed young Thoroughbreds.

The effect of copper supplementation of pasture fed mares and foals on the copper status of the foals, in terms of plasma, soft tissue and bone copper concentrations and caeruloplasmin activity, was investigated. Twenty-one Thoroughbred foals from either control mares (n = 9), or copper-supplemented mares (n = 12) were divided randomly into control (pasture only, n = 10) or supplemented (pasture and oral copper sulphate, n = 11) groups. The pasture diet was grazed by all animals, and contained 4.4-8.6 mg Cu/kg dry matter (DM). The copper supplement for the mares contained copper sulphate equiv
